Ruger Hawkeye African .375 Ruger as Dangerous Game rifle?

Well, so far the rifle has been flawless. Much smoother now than when NIB. Apart from the possibility of a future stock replacement I would hunt DG with it tomorrow. Can’t say the same for my Savage 110 Brush Hunter in .338WM which absolutely cannot be fast cycled due to a bad magazine center...

    Hard Recoil Pad?

Interesting you mentioned that, Ontario. I used the Lyman template to determine the size I needed, which indicated large. The online retailer was out of stock for a red pad in large, ‘tho. I remeasured on the template and the medium size would just fit…barely. So, I ordered a medium pad to...

    Hard Recoil Pad?

Agree it definitely is better material than the original. I just thought the Old English logo looked more “expensive” than Decelerator.

    Hard Recoil Pad?

I purchased my Mauser .458WM earlier this year from a LGS at a very decent price knowing it was due for a few upgrades. The unknown gunmaker was a true artisan as evidenced by the fit and finish of the metal and gorgeous wood. The LGS estimated it was built in the 60’s or 70’s. It has a 26”...

Ruger Hawkeye African .375 Ruger as Dangerous Game rifle?

Good info, thanks. I agree the stock is a tad svelte for a .375 caliber rifle and may restock it down the road. I recently ground a new recoil pad for my .458WM and will definitely replace the pad on this African in the interim.

Wanted .338 WM Brass - Anyone?

Sure would like to find some new/gently used .338WM brass without having to order my entire SS check’s worth to satisfy the online retailer’s minimum. Stuff is hard as Chinese arithmetic to find these days. Anyone?

When I was younger I always bent over to pick up what I dropped. Now I stare at it until I decide if I really need it that bad.

    Best Sticks for Tall Guys?

Rifle’s ready, ammo loads are about finalized, and it’s cooling down a bit in SE Texas so time to practice the art of shooting off sticks. I’m 6’-5” so thought I would seek some expertise for stick recommendations before I waste money and time guessing, which is my usual method of acquisitions...

Want To Buy 375 Ruger Brass Once Fired Or New

Be tender with that Patriot! I bought one in .375 Ruger when they were first offered and had the walnut stock, which was later discontinued due to cracking issues. The new stocks fixed that issue, but the plastic magazine well remains a weak point. If you torque those bottom screws too much...

Mauser .458 WM 3 Position Safety?

My question now involves potential issues with bolt disassembly between the 3 position Gentry and the 2 position Wisner? Do both cause the cocking piece to decock when the shroud is rotated?

Mauser .458 WM 3 Position Safety?

Thanks for all the input, guys. Gentry has shown out of stock for the M98 version for a couple months so I will give them a call based on the + reviews. I’m not in a huge hurry long as their resupply time is reasonable. I’m not familiar with a two position version but assume it’s about the...

Mauser .458 WM 3 Position Safety?

I’m pondering a Winchester style safety for my custom Mauser .458 and see Gentry and Pacific Tool seem to be the big players in that market. Gentry has been out of stock for the M98 but PT&G says ready to ship. Anybody have pros or cons for either brand? This rifle will never wear an optic...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

I recently bought a Hawkeye African in .375 Ruger and agree it was a little rough on cycling at first, but smoothed out nicely after working 25-30 dummy rounds through the action. It feels smooth now.

Is 'jump' the same as freebore?

I have heard the terms used interchangeably. My benchrest friends seem to prefer jump while this long time handloader says freebore.

Ruger Hawkeye African .375 Ruger as Dangerous Game rifle?

I owned an M77 .25-06 years ago with absolutely no issues either. My new(ish) Savage 110 Brush Hunter .338 WM is another story…feeds fine if you’re not in a hurry to close the bolt. I own another .375 Ruger but bought this African specifically for my first SA hunt so was concerned with the...

Ruger Hawkeye African .375 Ruger as Dangerous Game rifle?

That’s great news, thanks. The thread I was reading did not mention specific “issues” so I assumed it must be feeding reliability for DG. I just haven’t been able to force a fault with dummy rounds in the living room or live fire at the range…yet. That was with Hornady 300g DGX and Nosler...

Ruger Hawkeye African .375 Ruger as Dangerous Game rifle?

Greetings….I have read several opinions here stating Ruger bolt actions have issues so I am most curious what I need to be aware of, most especially since I recently acquired an African in .375 Ruger. So far the rifle has ingested my 260 and 300gr handloads without a hiccup, even when cycled...
