    375 Ruger or H&H

Between the two I'd say get the Ruger for the simple reason that you know the rifle already. You are far more familiar with the Ruger than the Zastava and that goes a long way in a pinch situation. I've owned a 375 Ruger in a left handed Hawkeye for almost a decade without regret. Performance...

    Eland

While I use the Barnes TTSX in my 30-06 I can honestly say there is nothing wrong with the Nosler Partition for an eland. Particularly a 250 grain 338 caliber. The 338 Win mag using the same bullet has been a standard brown bear round in Alaska for a long time for a reason. If you hand load it...

    Wyoming Knife

Yep, that's original. I had one and used the gut hook but the skinner side didn't do it for me. It got lost somewhere and now I have a seatbelt cutter for a gut hook. Works great.

    Bald Eagles and bad neighbors

I took that shot years ago in Dutch Harbor Alaska. I was maybe five feet from it as it perched on a dumpster. Ha ha. They're everywhere out there. I was fighting a dolly varden char near the shore once and had one swoop down and miss grabbing that fish by inches.

Why no enthusiasm for Ruger MK11 actions

I wasn't shooting it backwards, when I pulled the trigger the bullet went away from me. Had I done it backwards I suspect Marius would have just used me for bush pig bait. I was shooting it on the correct shoulder too, just cycling it with the wrong hand. Not my fault the bolt is on the wrong...

Why no enthusiasm for Ruger MK11 actions

I own a left-handed M77 Hawkeye in 375 Ruger and have had zero issues with it. Flipped that safety off and on in a heartbeat while buffalo and plains game hunting last year without issue. I also used a rental Hawkeye in right-handed 300 WM in 2018. I wisely asked what rifle I'd be using as a...

    Euro Taxidermy in Africa

If you're near a port with USFWS and CBP you can clear it there yourself and save a bunch. People did it all the time in Anchorage. I wish I cpuld this go around but mine will have to be cleared in Seattle before going on a barge up to Anchorage this time.

    Help with taxidermy shipment

I too live in Anchorage. In 2020 when Delta wasn't flying from RSA I had a shipment go on Turkish to Chicago, then someone else to Seattle, and then on a barge up here. Arrived fine. Not sure they can do that at this time of year, but I may be finding that out soon with my buffalo, which is in...

Looking for .375 for Dangerous Game... Do They Exist?

That depends on the cartridge. A 375 Ruger with a 20" barrel will give you the performance of a 375 H&H at 24" so, don't dismiss the Ruger. As for which is better for length, that's a personal choice. I have the 23" early Ruger African, it works great for me, but some definitely prefer the 20"...

My friend's set up for this three day weekend. He's got a room in there for a small wood stove, table and chairs and such. And at night a cot on each side to sleep two. I went up for the day today to hang out with him and a few others, mostly outside trting to catch lakers and burbot. Mostly...

    A green No.1?!

I just threw up in my mouth a little from seeing that pic. So, it's in a little gunshop in the central valley of California. Ok, I'm guessing whoever hawked it to the gunshop needed money for repairs around the trailer or something even more suspicious. Just a guess.

Best time of year to hunt Limpopo?

I hunted buffalo in the Limpopo right now last year and had no issues other than a sunburn, which was my own fault. It got hot some days but not horrible, and I loved hunting in the green grass, a nice change from dry season hunts. Quite a nice change from Alaska right now. I have a report on it...

I have skull mounts of four of my seven animals from a year ago done by Safari Taxidermy out of Polokwane, including a buffalo. From pictures I've received I'm happy. First time to Africa, looking for help

A decent day of ice fishing

My buddy has a big pop up. Once the ice is over a foot we drive out, put a foam mat down to insulate the floor and set it up with cots and a little wood stove. We're good for an overnight for trout and burbot. That lake has axlot of wind so the snow gets blown off and freezes thicker than most...

How does the process of bringing back birds for taxidermy differ from plains game?

From southern Africa, which has Newcastle Disease and/or Avian flu, according to the USDA Animal Products Manual page 3-20-10 table 3-20-5 it either has to be a fully finished mount or the unfinished skin must go to an approved facility. So the same as swine (warthog or bushpig) or zebra.

New rifle, One and only for Africa

The 308 or 30-06 for a first rifle fits the bill perfectly. Every outfitter I talked to before going on my first hunt mentioned those two for a reason, they work. Not surprisingly most outfitters own one of those two for their own personal rifle and rental guns. I personally used a 30-06 for my...

Slices of a good garden fresh tomato with a dash of salt. That's it. In Alaska, where they are very tough to grow and the store bought ones are often nearly bland as water they're worth their weight in gold.

    Kodiak mountain goat

I've got a fair amount of friends and coworkers who've hunted goats. Lots of smiles and groans in that group. Look into the stats and reports for that hunt from different sources. The .375 Ruger is 13 y/o now. A look back at people's early opinions

No worries. In your defense, the scope is set up normal, Leupold puts their windage turret on the right side. It just so happens to be quite advantageous for me. But all kinds of other stuff does need to be reworked or rethought, bow tuning instructions are all for right-handers.

My Thompson/Center Encore is back in action after a cracked stock sidelined it a few years back. This rifle was my main rifle of choice for a long time. The .375 Ruger is 13 y/o now. A look back at people's early opinions

Thanks, the exit wound is on the shoulder just above the muzzle. And yet it still ran around 100 yards with that shot. Yes. It's Leupold VXII 1-4X with a heavy duplex reticle. So for a right-hander you could rotate it 90 degrees counter-clockwise and the turret would be out of the way. Someone...
