Mercury reducers are simply an expensive weight. They use fake science to sell them. I used lead in some old 458 cases and an appropriate sized drill to add weight. A good recoil pad with nice rounded corners is also good. Some pads are oddly shaped with sharp corners and they leave a mark. Also...
I think all of the above posters are right, the long Win mag throat allows an almost Lott length to chamber.@badboymelvin can give you some COAL for longer win mag loads. Maybe drop him a PM.
Dalton and York can be trusted. Nothing is 100 % and I am sure they gave you a fair idea. Zimbabwe has many areas of high concentration of leopard and good operators with good areas have a good chance. Areas like Nuanetsi and others have leopard densities that are among the highest in the world...
Wood splits down the grain. So crossbolts go across wood grain and hold it together to prevent splitting. As others have said, glass bedding also helps. Particularly weak areas like magazine and trigger are worse because more wood is removed so those areas. They arecommonly reinforced with...
Regardless of the non- scientific nature of the video, I was surprised by the lack of stability after maybe 6 inches of penetration through soft gelatin and plastic. Nothing like an elephant skull. And I observed the bullet was more stable on entry and noticeably yawning and wobbling on exit...
Hi all, just watched this video posted by Garand Thumb on YouTube. Pretty amazed at how much the bullet was beginning to yaw and maybe tumble after a fairly short trip through ballistics gel and plastic bones.
I suggest heating the metal before you try any removal. A commercial clothes iron or soldering iron works or else heating a flat iron bar and heating the magazine plate will loosen any epoxy. Then you can use lamp black ( soot from a candle) on the action and fit it in the stock to see where it...
In my time filming hunts, I saw 2 PH rifles hired to clients have scope problems. One was a leupold on a 300 h&h. It had been on the same rifle for years- 5 or 6 years. It was dropped on the hunt and then would not zero after that. Next was a Swarovski on a 375 h&h hired to clients. It was...
Download the Hornady Ballistics app and see what your trajectory is. My 458 lott with correct velocity input is 0.79 inches high at 60 yards with a 100m zero. That is the biggest deviation from the line of sight and it is negligible. The trajectory falls off pretty quick after that, already 0.9...
My CZ 550 in 458 win mag is 9.6 lbs. It was right on 9 lbs and I added some lead to the butt to bring it up to 9.6. That is with open sights and empty magazine. It is a nice rifle to shoot as far as 458 lott goes. CZ uses the same barrel profile so I know the 375 is heavier.
To see such heresy in the hallowed pages of our favourite forum.... Next you will be attacking Blaser rifles!
The optics world seems to have gone into fashion rather than function. And the current fashion is long range shooting complete with high bc bullets, new long range cartridges etc. I...
I have carried my 10 lb Cz 550 in one or the other hand at the balance point for years. I have started using a sling when guiding children's camps etc because it is easier to control the muzzle and leaves my hands free for using binos etc. Also carried a camera while filming hunts at about 6...
Weakest point of your stock in recoil is between the magazine and recoil lug and second is magazine to trigger. The wood is two strips either side of the magazine box and recoil flexes them out and splits the wood- either in the centre or at each corner. A front barrel recoil lug doesn't really...
I have seen a few peeps here in Zim. I can't think offhand of the owners names. A wide v is pretty bullet proof. Big chunk of metal that is unlikely to catch on anything. And a wide variety allows more peripheral vision while a peep can obscure the circle around your target. I don't think it...
If you don't win with a warranty claim, that crack is an easy fix. Slide and exact knife into the crack and gently open it. Squeeze some wood glue in and blow it in with compressed air. Then tie the crack closed with surgical tubing rubber.
I would try a spacer washer under the spring first. Hard plastic or mild steel. Photos distort perspective but that part looks a bit bent to me, both on the round shift and the flat bar. Both in areas I would expect to be machined straight and at right angles. Without seeing that part in action...
Soon several people will be along to correct you. I started a thread a while back with a video from a YouTuber who offered good money to anyone who could shoot a 1 moa group. No warm up, just take your gun out the car and first 5 rounds at 100 m. I lost count of how many tried. And it was all...
375 H&H Winchester, CZ, Mauser or any controlled feed action is your best option. Rem 700 is ok. Put a Scope sight with 1-4 or 1- 8 magnification on and go shoot a buffalo.
You could choose pretty much anything you read about on the Internet from a sharpened stick to an 800 NE but I reckon a...
As a former hunting camera man so not a PH but I have some experience. The most important thing is to communicate clearly with your PH. Build a picture of your hunt to him and then he can tell you what he can and cannot do. For example, you want an unfenced area/ want a buffalo primarily and...
I feel that I would get a 404 for the romance and history. Shooting it from a Blaser kind of messes that up. So I would say a mauser type action is needed. If you get a barrel from Blaser, it should be business- a 416 rem.
Good advice. I think Heym are the best gun for the money. I would also look at 470 calibre. But maybe shoot you 416 for a while. A 500 nitro is heavy to carry but it is fun to shoot.
A lot(t) of people go out of their way to be unpleasant. I would like to give you a few facts and you can make your own decision.
1. Win mag chamber has a longer throat- even longer than the lott chambering. SAAMI specs.
2. Cz 550 is more suited to the lott- magazine etc is long and feeding is...
I would disagree. 375 H&H has plenty of penetration for a brain shot, more penetration than a 500 NE i would wager. It will drop an elephant if your aim is good. I am not saying it is the best choice but it will do the job.
I use an open top. It is protected from the elements by my generous stomach overhang. Much better than a thin piece of leather, it has 2 layers of leather + insulating fat and cloth over the lot.
Leather often reacts with the brass creating a green mess. I understand that is non vegetable tanned leather. But leather does absorb atmospheric moisture. Canvas doesn't react. I have a leather slider with 10 round capacity + 5 in my magazine. So I have 15 rounds + extras in a pack if I want.
Courtney sell leather polish with their boots. It is a soft beeswax based polish. I am sure you can find a similar polish. Elephant hide is tough and a normal leather polish will not hurt it.
Lead core bullets are shorter for the same weight. I would try Hornady DGS and see if they fit. You used to get 500 gr and 480 gr solids in DGS pre covid. I would also try Peregrine copper bullets. It is what I use, copper is also heavier than brass and the design has a blunt nose. I have used...
My hunting rifle, a CZ 550 in 30-06 is realistically a 2 moa rifle. That is with a variety of factory ammo, properly zeroed over the years. I will work up a good handload one of these days. As One Day said, vitals are pretty big on african game and so I reckon 2-3 moa will work. Varminting would...
My CZ 550 started life as a 458 win mag. It went in for work on the front sight and the smith offered to ream it to a Lott for free. So I have the long lead of the win mag + lott chamber. I used to load win mag ammo long because the rifle feeds better with a longer OAL using 450 gr, 480 gr...
My Lott was dead on at 75 m so I didn't need to adjust the sights. I would try shooting off sticks in the same way that you will use it in the field. The recoil effects the POI.
Next download a ballistics app and see what changes in bullet/velocity etc does. In my experience there is little...
Cz 550 has a big action and accommodates COL of a Lott.
I have one and used to load win mag ammo to win mag COL and longer. Be careful you don't over do it. I then had it reamed to Lott for free while getting other work done. The gunsmith said it was a easy and quick job. The win mag chamber...
I agree that bonded bullets are a simple one size fits all solution. Monumental perhaps a little less adaptable- great for larger animals but perhaps a little hard for small animals.
Cup and core work if you make sensible choices. They will behave poorly if your calibre is small for purpose...
7x 57, 308, 30-06 or 300 win mag. All will be suitable for everything up to elam
No where you will use your 9,3 mm. All are excellent hunting calibres.
My first rifle was a 458 win mag - CZ 550. I grew up in a shooting family but just didn’t have my own rifle. Then I was having some work done on the sights of my rifle and the gunsmith said I can ream your rifle to Lott- for free. So I have a 458 lott. I have my dads 9mm and a 3006 and .22 now...
I would be happy with those groups. If your rifle is 1 MOA, then you have about a 1/2 inch wiggle off the bench and 1 1/2 off the sticks. I find that my rifle steadies up when I put some weight on the sticks- mostly straight down. I also think shooting offhand helps- I use an airgun at home...
Stunts like this give antis ammo against us and are simply not ethical. Animals should be hunted with a calibre and bullets that will reach the vitals from any reasonable angle and kill it quickly.
I filmed a big old Eland bull drop with one shot from a 30-06in Mozambique. I think the ammo was Remington Core-lokt 180 gr. I have A 3006 and use 180 to 220 gr bullets. I haven't taken an Eland yet. A friend of mine took a big old Eland cow with his 308 when we were out hunting. I feel an...
I think that is really good work. As someone said, you could increase the dark/shiny contrast to make it more striking. Iron chloride is usually used for etching and then strong instant coffee. Both will mess with your handle but I am sure you can suspend the blade only in coffee. It would...
Personally I use a 450 gr bullet in my win mag. Soft for Buffalo downwards and solid for elephant. I am not a great fan of changing bullets- Murphy law will ensure you have the wrong weight in the gun. But that said, I colour my softs with a marker- bullet and base of cartridge -so their are...
