Double rifles aren't just for Africa

I think most double rifles were not made for Africa at all. My bigger calibres are all ex India . My light double a 303 was made for deer stalking in Scotland . I flattened a doe with it in early October at 130 yards . I also wouldn’t hesitate to use a 375 H&H on red deer and larger . Also great...

    I agree a 375 just gives you a more versatile rifle .

We must be talking about a different cartridge . Had a 458 Lott - gone . Have 2 505 Gibbs - keepers . Only do hand loading. No problems .

What is the ultimate stopping rifle..?

I can relate to the small tree scenario on a running shot . Cut a small tree in half but still flattened a small boar . 450 Rigby was all I had to hand at the time .

Rigby Big Game Vs Heym Express vs Mauser 98

I do not have Heym or modern Mauser rifles but I do have 2 modern Rigbys. A 450 PH model and a 416 Big Game with peep sight . The Big Game was a lot more expensive than PH . I do not think the Big Game extras are worth the extra $ . The 450 PH has become my go to big rifle . Strangely it is a...

    New "classic" .318 Westley Richards?

With regards to the beautiful 318 WR rifles being shown - how many have Metford rifling ? Mine has Metford as do almost all my pre WW1 English rifles . I find they shoot very well and the barrels are all in good shape .

    How long is "too long"

I am 5 foot 10 inches . On heavy rifles I use 14.5 inch stocks and never less than 14.25 inches. These dimensions work well for me but I am hunting mainly in northern Australia so only in lightweight clothing .

    .505 Gibbs Load Data

A 505 shooting 600 grain bullets at 2400fps will definitely give you the recoil experience you are seeking . I am happy with 2150fps with the 600 grain pill . It certainly seems to hit hard and penetrate .

What is the future of the fine firearms market

I could not agree more . If I am thinking about my investment I think about shares, commercial and residential property . If I think about my H&H , Rigby , Purdey and WR rifles I think about actually when / where I use them and my friends who accompany me . Great memories .

One caliber away from contentment... who else?

I’m in OZ and have no problems getting brass for 600, 500 , 505, 425, 404 , 416, 450/400, 450 Rigby , 318 the list goes on . I reload . Woodleigh also back in operation so bullet situation will also be rectified . I actually think OZ reloaded have great access to local bullet , brass and powder .

    New "classic" .318 Westley Richards?

While not used for elephant hunting I was very surprised in how much space Bell dedicated to his “workhorse” a 256 George Gibbs rifle . He used this to provide food for his porters , camp followers and local communities . I think this rifle may well have been fired more than all the others...

    New "classic" .318 Westley Richards?

Like others on this forum I was fascinated with the 318 WR . I was lucky to pick up this takedown version ( with a matching 425WR takedown) from a mate. It was made in 1908 . Has a 26 inch barrel and shoots really well . Was also able to pick up some period lead sealed ammo as well . Just a...

    303 british double

And a Rigby 303 Rising Bite . Most English makers churned out these lovely rifles in sidelock , boxlock , falling block and bolt actions either on Lee Speed / Lee Enfield actions or Mauser slant box ( very uncommon ) formats . All are good rifles with a terrific cartridge .

    425 Westley Richards

My two 425 WR rifles. No.39359 from 1913 is the bottom rifle and No. 43267 is the upper rifle . Both are best grade rifles . 39359 is a takedown with 5 distinct steps in the barrel profile to reduce weight . It also has a milled barrel finish to reduce glare . No. 43267 is from 1958 . It had...

    303 british double

Here is my Purdey 303 . It was made for Highland stalking . It was completed in 1898 but went out for the deer season “in the black “ in 1887 . It is totally original . Shoots 180 grain Sellier And Bellott ammo very happily . I took a nice Chittal doe with it in October . Shoots beautifully .

    303 british double

Which rifle do we crown as the best looking ever?

For my 2 bobs worth the nicest rifles I have ever seen were made by Daniel Fraser in Edinburgh . I can’t split it between two 303s. One is a slant box Mauser take down with a little Celtic engraving . The second 303 is a double rifle again with minimal Celtic engraving . The third is a huge...

Which rifle do we crown as the best looking ever?

Fabulous cartridge in fabulous rifles . I have 2 . The older has extended magazine and takedown mechanism . It was made in 1913 . Similar to the older one show in the photos . It has 5 changes in barrel profile and filed grooves the full length of barrel to reduce glare . 26 inch barrels ...

    .450 Rigby whats your opinion

I have a Rigby 450 PH rifle and I am a huge fan . I reload using 500grain pills at 2350 - 2400 fps . It is brilliant . I can always get the bullets and in a pinch I can use 416 brass . I had a 458Lott Ruger Safari Magnum - very nice but the Rigby is better . I actually prefer shooting it to my...

AUSTRALIA: Back Country Hunt - NT Australia

London Guns made some really nice bolt action rifles . Have seen some great 404 , 505 and 500J rifles . John Saunders and his team also made some great Gibbs Farquharson falling blocks in 577 and 600 NE . Sad they are not still around .

I own wear Courtney boots . They are very comfortable for me . But I always travel with a roll of heavy tape . The soles have become unglued twice while hunting - and while still fairly new. Pretty disappointing .

505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

I adore my 425 WR and my 375 and 300 H&H magnums . Rebated rims / belted cases i don’t give a stuff . They are just great cartridges in great rifles .

505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

I have only ever seen 500J on magnum actions and in rifles weighing around 11lbs. Can’t imagine shooting a “light” rifle with this cartridge . Much prefer the 505G to shoot .

505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

I never notice the recoil on my 505 , 500 NE or 600NE when hunting . I do not even notice the bang . But I am bloody deaf .
