Bob de Vries at Kudu Services in Melbourne might have a go . He has built a 505 Gibbs for me and is doing another one for me . Beautiful work . I am a huge fan of the 425WR - have 2 . Both made by WR and both “Best” grade rifles . One from 1912 with an extended magazine the other from 1958...
I am a big fan of Pachmayer slip on pads . Some older rifle stocks are a bit short and have metal or horn butt plates . I have 3 sizes of slip ons which cover all sizes of stocks . No need to mess with the original timber and they work really well .
Yes but why ? They are devastating on buffalo particularly with the 600 grain soft nose pills at 2150 fps . I can only imagine the solids of similar weight would be super effective on elephant .
I replaced the horrible hard butt pad on my 458 Lott Ruger Safari Magnum with a Kick Eez and extended stock by about 0.75 inches . Made a world of difference to shooting . I too am a 505 addict . Have a custom rifle with 25 inch barrels and SSB magnum action - about 11 pounds . Another nearing...
The
one I shot had 20 inch barrels . It has been restocked . No heavier but much better to shoot . My 318 WR shooting 250 grain pills is a much nicer rifle to shoot and has plenty of punch .
John Rigby and Paul Mauser were such good friends they were responsible for developing the 303 Lee Enfield and 8x57 Mauser . Managed to kill millions between them .
100% agree with you on the Rigby and Westley Richards. Terribly expensive as bolt actions and far worse as doubles but geez they are good to look at and even better to shoot .
I use both the 2209 ( mainly ) and 2213SC but can’t recall the effect when shooting . Suspect the 2209 was my preference because I seem to buy a lot of it .
Well said . It seems to me that a lot of these old British dangerous game calibres and rifles are better known over here in OZ than in the US . They certainly get plenty of use here on water buff / banteng . Perhaps because OZ has a closer association to UK than does the US. Over here there are...
I got it in early 2022. At the time I ordered a PH with 24” barrel , SSB and a few extras including a peep sight and gold escutcheon with my initials . As you know extras are not available on PH models . I was quietly waiting for someone to contact me to say I would have to upgrade to a Big Game...
I have a Mauser Type A single square bridge magnum in 404 J . It was made in early 1920s and spent many years in India . Only weighs about 9 pounds , 24” barrel , no cheek piece on stock and a very narrow butt with horn on the end . It is the worst rifle for felt recoil I have ever used ...
My 450 PH is a SSB with heavy 22” barrel . The 416 Big Game is also SSB with peep sights. It has the lighter 24” barrel. I can only think the lighter barrel makes the difference in felt recoil . It is really noticeable .
It is hard to say why they feel different . The 450 PH is marginally heavier . Both bullets are travelling about the same speed . Barrel on 450 is heavier than on 416. The 2 rifles have been fired by a very noted big game rifle / cartridge book author and a fellow who has a huge collection of...
What a beautiful rifle . I have a plain Jane PH in 450 Rigby . It is the best out of a box rifle I have ever owned . Very accurate and nicer to shoot than the 416 Rigby Big Game . Mine really likes the 500 grain RNSN at 2350 fps . Devastating on water buff. Would only contemplate 550 grain pills...
Yes the only guy who comes to my mind is Keith Thomas . I had major dramas with a 500 of mine which I had made in the UK. Once I had it here in OZ I realised there was a problem . Graeme Wright made a gig and did a brilliant job regulating it for me . I wish Keith Thomas had been available...
Holland and Holland did on their cheaper bolt actions in 1950s and were often chambered in 404 Jeffery . Have one of their old brochures showing this particular rifle .
I have no idea who they will use for component supply - but it sounds exactly like the business model used by all the English gunmakers for the last 2 hundred years . They all used and still use skilled out workers . Very few ever made the lock, stick and barrel .
HH - here are some pics of the WR sidelock #17683 . Completed in 1920 . A beautiful best rifle sold from WR’s outlet at 23 Conduit Street in Mayfair . Directly opposite the original Bentley Motors and around the corner from H&H and George Gibbs. The action on this rifle is real belts and braces...
The London makers and WR are generally very good with providing gun histories for a small fee. Knowing who went before you with a weapon really adds a mystique particularly when you are hunting. I recently read a fellow got FC Selous’ 425 WR at a fairly reasonable price because the vendor had...
A fabulous looking rifle . Mark Newton and Jerome Lanoue came out to Brisbane last year . Had a small drinks party one Saturday night and sold 4 of them in sleepy old Brisbane ! Just some local boys no big shots . I ordered mine there and then . Love what Rigby are doing and such good guys to...
I will put up some pics of the Maharana’s rifle in the next few days . It is superb . Have yet to specify the ammo for regulating the 500NE. Was thinking of going with Norma which is what was used for my other one .
HH the Purdey is a 303 deer stalking rifle . Jones underlever , non ejector , bolted safety made in 1898 for Viscount Chaplin a British land owner and Cabinet Minister . His father in law was the Duke of Sutherland . This rifle was kept at Dunrobin Castle in Scotland . It is in fabulous...
I share your view . Through back breaking work over decades I have built a collection of double rifles by Purdey , H&H , Rigby and WR . I also really enjoy my Ruger Safari magnums and No 1 , CZ550 and various BRNOs. I use them all regularly no closet queens . However there is nothing remotely...
The Rigby 350 was the original Magnum Mauser action . It was built by Mauser at Rigby’s request . Not a true dangerous game cartridge but it makes sense to me that Rigby would offer it on their Big Game platform .
I prefer the splinter fore ends . Look more traditional and easy to control barrels when shooting . In a hunting situation I have never really noticed the barrels getting hot . But then again I never hear the bang or feel the recoil . Just total focus on the shot .
I am having a Rigby double rifle built at the moment . When measuring me up the guys from Rigby were almost totally fixed on the cast off . LOP not such a big factor . Correct cast means you eye rapidly aligns with rear and front sights - pretty crucial in a dangerous game rifle .
