The next day comes early and we are off to our 3rd attempt for red duiker. This morning has a lot of mist and fog and I forgot to mention that we got some moisture in the form of a hail storm of all things! This was the first water they had received since February. They are in a bad drought...
Good question Bill. The next day will get posted tonight but I know the landowner of the klippie property had his guys comb the mountainside again and no recovery...so we think the klippie recovered. When I ran through my shot process again, I realized that I had incorrectly used the multi...
We got back to the lodge after that terrible morning and ate something and then I laid down for a bit to try and relax. Later that afternoon, Dieter said let’s go back out and drive around some with the 416. That sounded like a good idea so we picked up the tracker and drove around for awhile...
This next post is very challenging for me. Let’s call it what to do with a bad day in the field.
We went back to the big mountains where the klippies were and this time we were going to grab one of the farm workers to help us find them. We drove in early and picked him up and headed back to...
Dave you bring up a good point. The speed of these little guys is amazing and they are super paranoid and on high alert a lot of time. It's like they have been drinking energy drinks and eating a lot of sugar and caffeine! Then for a moment they might stand still and they glow like a little...
That area is really something isn't it? Beautiful country but not easy to traverse! There were several times I had to stop while climbing to catch my breath and it was hot! Mountain climbing in the heat is not easy. I fell once in the loose rock and thankfully our tracker Vusi was right...
I really enjoyed using Africa Sky on the return a few days ago. My layover at JNB was going to be 10 hours and Africa Sky came and picked me up and gave me a day room rate on a suite where I could shower and rest, a nice meal and airport pickup and return for not much more than $100.
Agreed...
Here we go for red duiker again! This was one of my most important goals for this hunt along with the Sharpe’s grysbok. We have now gone to plan B and gotten onto a different property, which is an avocado and nut farm. I really liked this property with its large fields, groves of trees and...
I will post them separately to keep topics on track. I would like to keep the hunting report focused on that experience as the other 2 topics should also be focused.
Dieter had a klippie hunt with an older gentleman in this same area end very quickly on the first or second set of calling. It was almost at the bottom of the mountain. In comparison, we found mountains that we didn't even know were there on this day of calling. At one point, I asked Dieter...
I'm not really a user of the .243 in particular but the 22 Hornet and 416 barrels were not going to work for this application. I could have brought a 3rd barrel and probably should have done so. That's one of the lessons learned as you transition among so many different types of hunting for a...
2350 is a great terminal velocity in a 416 with 400's. I've used that recipe many times on all types of DG and PG, including a trip I just got back from. As another option, have you looked at H4895? I actually run that at 2325-2350 with the above results. I just like that powder better and...
So the 2nd full day was the red duiker calling mentioned above and the following experiences. On the way to call red duiker we were driving on a dirt road among houses on the edge of town (Louis Trichardt). As we came around a corner, Dieter said did you see that? I said no...and then he...
Ok, so I got a little mixed up in my notes with the order of things. That doesn’t matter really to anyone but the first day of red duiker calling and the nyala were on different days. I’m writing these hunt updates in between client calls and got my notes mixed up a bit. This post will clear...
So that was a pretty good start all things considered…and wait until you hear the rest of the story when I post another topic about police interference on the arrival day that threatened to end the hunt before it even started. This hunt didn’t even officially start until the next day but here...
I hear ya B. This hunt will have some good luck, some hard work of course and some downright low points. I'm splitting the hunt into 3 different topics for those reasons.
I felt super jazzed to have such a good first night hunt and the hunt didn't even officially start until the next day!
3 grand is a lot for Sharpe's. Time and $ are big factors in how you approach taking the T10. There is nowhere you can get all of them in one location. Some places are higher cost than others but more convenient since you are there. In this case, trophy fees were 2500 for Sharpe's grysbok...
First night of hunting…part 2
After getting the grysbok so quickly, we decided to look around in the dark and see what we could find. Those avocado and nut farms are so beautiful and full of life, especially at night.
The landowner/neighbor made an interesting comment as we looked around for...
I hear you...sounds crazy right? Honestly, I didn't know how big it was for sure but the PH and the neighbor acted like I was nuts. We did look for it later but no luck there.
Excellent. Which 3 are left for you? Probably sunni and...
These little guys require a lot of planning and effort. I doubt anyone has accomplished it randomly without some strategy and focus.
First night of hunting… SOUTH AFRICA Limpopo Part 1
This trip allowed me to stay a night at the home of my good friend and PH, Dieter Prinsloo who owns Mattanja Safaris. Dieter is an AH forum sponsor and great all around guy. As much as we both love hunting DG, we had planned on something...
Yea...there is usually one or two around for the price of a used car. Crazy.
For reference, I sent a note to Trophy Room Books (one of my go to's for quality books) and they reminded me there are only 2 editions...first printing and the reprint. Each is very large in size and weight and don't...
The first day back in Africa is always interesting and a little crazy as you get moved into the area by plane, truck, boat and whatever else is needed. Thankfully there were no issues with the travel this trip. I learned early on to rely on the professionals when traveling to other countries...
I know how hard this book is to find and sadly owned one years ago and let it go! It's not seen for sale often but thought I would give it a shot here. Author is Vivian J. Wilson.
I have long focused on chasing the big dangerous game that makes your heart accelerate and your palms sweat. Perhaps a mental professional would even say that I’m addicted to it. What could possibly be better than sneaking into the footprints of one that is taller than trees…5 tons in weight...
I just saw a large black mamba a few days ago. We had been crawling around in the brush looking for red duiker and then came out to find him close by. Nasty!
Yes very warm in Limpopo. It rained briefly one day and hailed of all things. Rest of week was dry and dusty. That was their first rain since Feb at my location.
I’m back in Joburg to fly home tonight. What an epic trip…both ups and downs! Already started working on a hunt report. Another season completed as always with mixed emotions…and yes the .416 got a good workout along with the 22 Hornet.
Yes, I have used that .416 400 gr CPS on ele, multiple buff, croc, eland, etc with excellent results. Broke both shoulders on a big zebra and lifted dust all the way down his back on impact. That bullet is still going somewhere out there.
Between a Dakota 10 and a Blaser K95, I have taken a dozen impala as well as kudu, hyena, a top 10 duiker, various night critters and tiny 10 in the last 2 years in Africa. Not a single issue or concern from using single shots. I used it on my leopard hunt last year. Single shots are nice to...
