This stock was returned to Cali'co because of the spots at the end of the fore end, circa 1997. Cali'co replaced it with a new stock blank and sent both pieces of wood back.
If I was going to build a Sako-actioned rifle today, I would use this in a heartbeat because the spots have no effect on...

These black walnut stock blanks are cut for A-Square "Coil Check" stocks. They are just under 2.5" wide, allowing you to make the butt of your dangerous game rifle wide and spread the recoil force out over a larger area of your shoulder. I bought them while working at A-Square circa 1997.

"I wonder if a Remington rifle refused to cycle rounds through it if the owner would send it off to a gunsmith and pay for it out of his own pocket to make it reliable or would he hold Remi gton's feet to the fire and make them fix it right free of "extra" charge?"
Is exactly...

My Lovely Spousal Unit is from Hartford, with cousins in agribusiness living in Redfield. I keep trying to get her to retire to the Black Hills (4,000' = dry air), but so far, no luck.

TByrd - great price for the .45/70! You are killing me - just snagged a .375 Ruger with Vari-X 3 2.5-8x34 for $750, so have no allowance for several months
: (
Someone will see it and buy!
BeeMaa - I am trying the 270 grains first - 300 will have to be worked in sometime also, and for the cape buffalo some Swifts - yes, plannign for the 2nd trip already
Will have to get the scale out, but the Ruger site gives the weight as 8.1 lbs.. Mine is an older version without the muzzle brake. The scope weighs 11 some ounces.
The recoil was noticeable off the bench, but after these three, 3 round groups I had one cartridge left from reloading brass and...
Yep - my Alaskan has the 20" barrel - all $750 worth of it!
I am using RL15 in my .35WAI also, so wanted to try and stick with one powder, but this is just a starting point. Will see how this goes and determine if I get into a warm and fuzzy spot, or if a powder change is needed.
Appreciate...
Thanks, Guys, for the help.
Also had Shootist43 put it into Quickload and the software spits out that if I load 72.4 grains with the 20" barrel and 250 Barnes, I will be striking very near to a harmonic node, so should get good groups with 4,006 ft/lbs of energy, and something like 2686 FPS...

Designed in 1977. The original design objective was to provide a .50 caliber cartridge with a maximum overall length of 3.65" so that it could be utilized as a relatively easy conversion on existing rifles.

Just spoke with the tech at Barnes - here is what he gave me:
250 Grain TTSX, RL15
67.5 grains to 74.5grains as max
Velocity at max is 2930 with 24" test barrel
Need 1800 FPS for reliable expansion
Action Bob - your words make sense/jive with all of the other things I hear on the board here.
I still would like to be able to use it (the ranging feature), but agreeing with your assessment, the real focus would be use on an elk here stateside in the future. Got any measurements there?
Got the number 4 shellholder today, so could reload some cartridges. 72 grains of RL15, CCI 250 primers, Barnes 250 grainers, 3.320" COL. Best guess is about 2632 FPS (no chrony)
The same target as yesterday, groups 8, 9, 10.
Helps when the scope stays on! Now to the 100 yard range to really...
Here is the new toy ready to go slay critters!
I put 20 rounds through it today. 1st 6 off the bench, then the remainder off sticks. 250 grain GMX Hornady. Box says 2800 FPS. These were shot at the 25 yard range.
After the first three groups, I was beginning to wonder if the Vari-X 3 was gonna...

These Leupolds have a ranging feature. 1/2 of the site reticle (start of thicker portion of the duplex to the crosshair) = 16".
Does anyone have the approximate sizes of back to belly for African critters. The 16" ranging size for Whitetails in the US is a bit small for most of them I bet...
Since I worked at A-Square, I had some access to .495 brass, but I also have some converted .460 brass - hence the re-sizing die.
Thanks for looking - I more than most, understand when it just isn't quite right with regard to the funds!
I just ordered last night 2 more boxes of 250 grains Barnes, and one of 270 to try out and see if there is more harmonic happiness with 250 grain or 270 grain.
Thanks for the input/data points. I am like a kid on Christmas morning with this Alaskan! I had built a .35 WAI with a 20" barrel and...
Have started with 72 grains of RL15 and Barnes 250 grainers. 20" Ruger Alaskan barrel length. CCI 250 primers. Lee crimp die into top cannelure.
What should this be moving at?

You win the prize! So, as an example - if I load a light round nose bullet (200 grain .35 caliber in the Whelen) my COL will be much shorter than if I use the 250 grain Spire point. One can play with seating depth, but I think this illustrates how one bullet could hang-up coming out of the...
