Why no love for the .358 Win?

Mdwest that's a great load you have there. I achieved max performance with the 225grn TSX using Varget and W748. Chronographed at 2530fps. As the TSX is much longer, powder compression was sever. That said I had no pressure signs and bolt lift and extraction was 1 finger easy. I've since...

    9.3x62

Bush Buck, welcome to the following. The 9.3X62 has become my favorite medium bore. I primarily load and shoot either 250grn or 286grn Swift A-Frames. Sometimes Norma Oryx in 286grn. With various powders all have given superb accuracy and better than factory velocities. Everything shoots into...

Anybody have any paranormal or supernatural experiences to share??? Firsthand or second?

Yes indeed! My ex wife. She's the reason I keep a bottle of holy water, a wreath of garlic, a wooden stake and a mallet next to the front door in case she ever shows up. The only undead I worry about.

Glad to hear that sir. Was going by what my travel agency had told me. I happily stand corrected.

    Carrying ammo to Africa

Well glad to hear that but I was going by what Customs in Joberg told my group when we went through there on a previous trip. I can assure you I'm not in the habit of giving disinformation. As the rules are constantly changing in SA this can happen. Sorry you take exception to my post.

    Carrying ammo to Africa

Might recheck SA regulations. If memory serves, SA requires a metal locking ammo box. Other countries the pelican case is good to go.

Why no love for the .358 Win?

Mdwest you're on the right track! Loads with the 225grn Barnes are possible at 2500fps. Using Varget or W-748. You'll have to use a drop tube and they will compress the powder a lot. Never had pressure problems though. That Barnes TSX is long for it's weight and is why I've since gone to the...

Why no love for the .358 Win?

Funny you should mention that Bob. The geometry of a stock has a lot to do with felt recoil. The stock on my Steyr Scout in 308 feels like I'm shooting a 243. I've shot some rifles that are soft recoiling cartridges but because of the stock made your eyes water.

Why no love for the .358 Win?

With my 9.3 weighing about 1 3/4lbs less than my 375, 286grn pill vs 300grn within 100fps of each other, the 9.3 still has slightly less recoil to me. Both are comfortable to shoot. Understand though felt recoil is very subjective to the individual. What is comfortable to some may loosen the...

    358 Winchester loads

I would recommend the 225grn Swift A-Frame. At 2530fps using W748 it will handle everything up to Eland. I had excellent results when I used my 358 in Namibia.

Why no love for the .358 Win?

Well there is that. But as we used to say in the Airborne (82nd.) Tighten up your boot laces and keep on soldiering. Can't let things keep you down.

Why no love for the .358 Win?

Sadly can't do it. just got my money together for my May hunt and the transmission in my truck committed suicide. $4200 to get it back on the road. when it rains it pours eh?

Why no love for the .358 Win?

Yes sir the 99's are fine rifles. I picked up an early model with the rotary magazine in .284 Winchester. Great rifle. Would love to come across one in 358 Win.

Why no love for the .358 Win?

Idmay, welcome to the 358 club. Taco Kelly has a great article on the 358 Win on his website Leverguns.com. I've found H-335 works magic with 180-200grn bullets. Target and W-748 is best with 225-250grn bullets. Granted some of Pace's loads seem way over the top but,... factory loads were held...

Tribute to a called home friend

Yes sir, Howard lived life to its fullest. The tales he would tell of hunting in far off places were the stuff of dreams. With Howard it was never about the trophies or making the kill. It was all about the experience being there, Those are ideals to live by in my book.

    9.3 x 62 Opinions

Bob I never for a moment thought you'd turn your back on the 35,LOL. You are the champion of the Whelen and rightly so. Here in the States 35 caliber bullets are hard to come by.
  31. Rick HOlbert

    9.3 x 62 Opinions

Sorry but I have to disagree. Currently no one is chambering the 35 Whelen in a factory rifle. Custom build? Yes. As far as 35 caliber bullets? right now they are as scares as teeth in a chickens head. 9.3 in various weights are available from numerous sources. Bob Nelson will sing the praises...

    9.3 x 62 and the 320 grain Weldcore

Zim, no I don't have data for them but they gave you good info. Compared to other bullets they may seem soft but they hold together from what I've been told. Seems to be very good bullets.

    9.3 x 62 and the 320 grain Weldcore

    9.3 x 62 and the 320 grain Weldcore

Steve, I guess some folks look at it that way. Myself, I've got a soft spot for medium bore rifles. Like fine wine, one is richer having a selection of various vintages to choose from. LOL!

    9.3 x 62 and the 320 grain Weldcore

Another option would be looking at Hawk bullets. They are offered with different jacket thickness to match the bullet to the game you intend to hunt.. When I get back from my hunt in Namibia this May I'm going to obtain some from Hawk and do some load development to see how they preform.

Can 9.3x74R be used for Cape buffalo and/or leopard and other dangerous game in most African countries?

It is legal in Some areas. Boddington wrote an article about taking a buff with a double 9.3X74R and it proved adequate. Best bet is to check with your PH to see if legal in his area and if so if he will take you out armed with that rifle. It'll kill a buff, but it's not a stopping rifle by any...

Recommendation for a good performing 9.3X62?

There are several good choices out there depending on how much you wish to spend. Ruger M77 MKII African, Zastava 70 (if you can find one), Mauser M12, and the Blaser R8 on the upper end. I'm missing others but they are out there. I shoot a Zastava left hand Mauser action. Was rough at first but...

    Mediums that perform

Hmm, if the animal hasn't dropped in it's tracks I've never had a problem following a BIG blood trail and a short one at that using various medium bore rifles. Most times tracking isn't required.
  42. Rick HOlbert

    Mediums that perform

Try 225grn Swift A-Frame over W748 or Varget for 2530fps. Hits like Thor's hammer! Got the load from early Barnes load manual. 225grn Barnes TSX too long and compress the powder more than I care for.
  43. Rick HOlbert

    Mediums that perform

Great subject! I shoot and love the .358 Winchester in short action rifles. Load it with modern powders and bullets and it preforms all out of proportion to book ballistics. Works the treat on game up to Eland. Love my 9.3X62. With either 250 or 286grn A-Frames or Norma Oryx comes very close to...

    Most Dangerous Game (unwounded)?

Don't know about the big 7 but,.... the most dangerous animal I've seen is my PH's weiner dog! Anything that can run through the thorns with iit's wedding tackel that low to the ground is one bad ass animal!!

    Best bullets for plains game

Bob old friend you are 100% correct. Cast bullets work very well on game and much cheaper to shoot.
  48. Rick HOlbert

    Best bullets for plains game

As a life long shooter of cast bullets and having used them on a lot of different game they do work rather well. If they were a poor choice, then where did all the American Bison go?

Why no love for the .358 Win?

Hello Josh. Sor sorry friend but I can't recommend a longer barrel, especially on a Scout rifle. For the 358 and 308, a 18.5 to 20 inch barrel are optimum for a Scout. Velocity loss is minimal compared to a 22in barrel and at realistic hunting ranges you won't notice the difference. I've had a...

    .350 Remington Magnum anyone?

Good day. I've never run a 350 magnum but very familiar with it. Frankly if you use 200-225grn pills it's more than a short range proposition. I shoot a 358 Winchester and with careful hand loading I can get within 100fps of factory (I say again, Factory) 350 mag. Handloading you can exceed...
