PaulT its a Mauser made for the 100 year anniversary. I really don't know when it was made? Dates say 1898 tot 1998 on it. So I guess it would have been somewhere around the late 90's. Maybe someone can give a bit more info?

True my concern is "hardness" of mono bullets compared to normal softs that have some give going down the barrel. or am I just being paranoid?

From what I know you should be able to get all your hunting permits from either a gun shop or Cape Nature. When we go to Kalahari we stop off at Kururman post office for our licences. I am moving to Western Cape soon as well. Keen to see what the hunting is like down there.

Personally I love the spine shot. Its basically all I use, and its never failed me. I only have experience with African game though, don't know what the internals of the American animals would be. But if I had to pay in Dollars I would take the heart/lung shot just to be safe.

I have a Merkel with 23.6 inch barrels and it shoots very well out to 75 meters which in my opinion is the max range the rifle should be used at anyway. As for it being stubby?? Well that I suppose that's in the eye of the rifle holder I personally like a shorter rifle. If recoil is an issue...

What I have seen an A frame do to Buff and Hippo I think they more than compare.

I have shot everything from Springbuck to Eland with GMX many times over and without fail they have delivered! Perfect mushroom and awesome weight retention. I mainly use them in my 270 and 30-06. The only other bullet that can compete with them in my opinion is the A frame.
