    CZ 550 upgrades are back

Very nice pic, spike.t! That's a beautiful piece of wood on yours! Was that a DGR build by Wayne?

And Wayne sets the bar pretty high too for quality custom work. AHR DGR in .404 Jeffrey: Ask me how I know ...

404 Jeffery - coated HC boolits?

Another question, for you guys who have any of these 404J moulds, is: are you using gas checks (and with or without the powder coating)? An acquaintance who makes and sells HC bullets (no 404J mould, unfortunately) said I'll need to find or make GCs to run these bullets above 1600fps. Where...

404 Jeffery - coated HC boolits?

I saw they had this mould, but it's listed as 'Out of Stock' unfortunately. Product # JIM-4244400, a 2- cavity mould (so I assume it cranks out 2 boolits at a time(?)). Takes Saeco handles. https://www.buffaloarms.com/424-400-grain-rn-for-404-jef-jim2424400.html The barrel on my .404 is a...

375 H&H/9.3x62 Buffalo and Plains Game Combo

I tend to agree. If you're taking a .375 H&H, a 9.3 is pointlessly redundant for that class of cartridge. Just so everyone's clear, I'm NOT saying the 9.3 is a 'bad' choice. But if I'm taking my .375, it's likely going to be my 'all-around' rifle, and I'll bring my .404 Jeff for the Big Stuff...

    Rifles you will NEVER sell

The custom 30-40 Krag hunting rifle I inherited from my Grandfather (through an uncle) over 12-years ago. I could never find out who did the custom work, or where or when Gramps bought it. Everyone who might know has passed on. Maybe it's a Sedgely imitator, due to it being unmarked as to...

404 Jeffery - coated HC boolits?

Mould 43-400J is what his webpage is showing for the .404 Jeff. Maybe that's new? Is that the same mould you have? He also doesn't specify resulting diameter out of the mould. How are you getting .425 dia.? Maybe I'm not following how it's supposed to work. Thanks!

    Recoil: 404 Jeffery vs. 375 H&H and 416 Rigby

In fact, if loaded to its original velocity, Jeffrey's .404 imparts the least felt-recoil of any of the .400-class of DGR cartridges. Having shot two .458 WMs, one .416 Rigby, and one 460 Weatherby (exactly one shot was enough), pretty much steered me toward a .404 rifle.

    Recoil: 404 Jeffery vs. 375 H&H and 416 Rigby

True, but only if the .404 ammo, with a 400grn bullet, is properly loaded to its original specs, i.e., 2125-2150fps (depending on which of the early sources you're consulting). Shooting Hornady's .404 ammo skews the comparison because they chose to 'hot rod' the cartridge 200-250fps beyond...

    Recoil: 404 Jeffery vs. 375 H&H and 416 Rigby

Well, I have a custom BRNO 602 in .375 H&H, and an AHR custom .404 Jeff that was built on a CZ 550 Magnum action. CZ's 550 action is just an updated BRNO 602 action. They're set up similarly too, with both running the same slings and pretty much the same size and weight 1" scopes in similar...

    404 jeffery vs 416 Rigby

No, not 28". Per Jeffrey's 1911-1912 catalogue (a reprint), his advertised .404 rifle is specified as having a "24-inch Q.S. Nickel Steel Barrel." Velocity is specified at "2200 feet per second" with a "400 grain Nickel Cased bullet." Depending on which sources are consulted for the .404's...

Yesterday I found the old invoice from Wayne in my '404 Jeffrey' satchel. It contains all my .404 paper work, load notes, and even a reprint of Jeffrey's 1911-1912 catalogue. The invoice details all the build specs. Reviewing it over coffee this morning, I'd forgotten a number of the items...

    404 jeffery vs 416 Rigby

If you're asking me, a lot of what I've learned has come from reading Ross Siegfried's articles on the old Nitro cartridges that were loaded with a cordite charge. (You can find them in various back-issues of Rifle and Handloader magazine). He has repeatedly stated that the best modern...

    404 Jeffery reduced loads

That was the same load data for using 5744 that I received from Don when I inquired about reduced 404J loads. Very helpful and responsive gentleman. No filler is required when using this 5744 data. I'll have to check my notes, but I believe in a follow-up email, he said the same reduced load...

    404 jeffery vs 416 Rigby

Yes, loading the Jeffrey cartridge 200-250fps beyond the original specs for a 400grn bullet defeats the purpose of the .404. It won't kill any better than the same 400grn bullet @ 2100-2150fps, but it will make an 8lb-9lb rifle harder to shoot well generally, and more so under the stress (and...

Thanks Paul! It was a full custom build in 2011 by Wayne at AHR. He started with a base CZ 550 magnum action, which he then trued, blueprinted, and de-horned. The barrel is a Douglas, I believe. Don't have the spec sheet in front of me just now. NECG sights. Weebe bottom metal. I'll have to...

Disappointed In My New 404 Jeffery

Back in 2011, when I received my .404J rifle (a custom build by Wayne @ AHR), I immediately thought the same thing after the first range session with Hornady's 400grn ammo. Then I realized Hornady had loaded it to over 200fps faster than Jeffrey's original specs for a 400gn bullet. In fact I'd...

404 Jeffery - coated HC boolits?

Hi guys! New to this board, but not to the .404 Jeff. I've been handloading for my rifle for some years now using jacketed bullets but would like to try coated hard casts, if available - specifically a 400grn. .424 dia boolit. Anyone know who currently offers such boolits for sale...
