Im not worried about "protecting" the saw per se.. I figure if the tool is designed to be drug all over the woods, slammed into trees, etc... it doesnt really need protection from a ride in the back of the truck..

Im more interested in keeping the saw, some accessories, ear/eye pro, etc all organized and together so that all I have to do is pick up the box/case and go.. when I get to wherever it is I am going everything I need is with me..

For example.. I have a Stihl MS291.. in the factory case (was a freebie as part of the incentive/deal to buy the saw), is the saw, 2 wedges, a pair of gloves, eye and ear pro, the scrench, a spare chain, a file, and a can of pre-mix fuel, and some bar oil....

Id like to do something similar for the MS180.. but the factory case comparitively to the size of the MS180 is freaking huge.. I was hoping to find something a little smaller/lower profile, but with enough space inside to still fit all of the "extras" in addition to the saw so that it also is a simple "grab and go" type operation..
To me, a case is for two things: keeping the oil which WILL drain out of the bar oil reservoir from making a mess, and keeping you from cutting yourself on the bar/chain while walking by.

@steve white - Agree, my Stihl 362 started ‘slightly’ leaking bar oil at about 5 years old, took back to dealer just for a service/maintenance and asked them to fix that —they replaced the gasket seal….it still leaks slightly and was told “yeah, most do that after a few years”. I was surprised because its a Top of the Line pro model saw - great performance and with only 20” bar I have felled 30”-36”” trees (Not any more, too dangerous). You’d think that little bar oil leak would be correctable - obviously they don’t do it when brand New. When it was New the case was a Nice-to-Have but now it’s a MUST to keep anywhere I store it clean and free of oil.
I’ve been told by Forestry workers (lumberjacks) that I hired and did some cutting on my NY property that a chainsaw is “the Most dangerous tool commonly used”. I believe it, had a couple close calls that taught Me: 1). I am NOT a professional Lumber Jack. 2). Have NO business ever Felling any tree over 20” in diameter. 3). Always ALWAYS wear chainsaw chaps, helmet with face shield, eye protection, chainsaw boots or at a minimum Steel Toe boots. I am extremely careful, I do a lot of cutting on my wooded property some years felling trees, have “nicked” and cut into my chaps twice —— never drew blood, had a limb fall down and strike my helmet hard — never injured but it reminds me to Slow down, take frequent rests, and Always wear your protective gear No matter how Hot it is or how small and quick the job cutting project might be.

Recently in the tread about discontinued products Wyatt smith , Bob Nelson , myself and a few other gentleman were discussing the merits of several brands of chainsaw including some of which that are no longer in production. I thought given that most of us on the forum likely use chainsaws at some point be it commercially as land owners or lease holders clearing shooting lanes and food plot areas ect. We should have a thread discussing them.

Myself I collect jonsereds specifically but not limited to the 600 series. View attachment 676091

Currently for jonsereds I have
625
630 (x2)
670
520sp
2055 (x2)
2038

Also have a few Husqvarna and stihls mostly because I don’t trust my employees not to ruin my jonsereds.

What about the rest you? Must be some others on here that appreciate vintage saws. Show us your collections.
A good chainsaw is essential for maintaining land and shooting lanes. I've always had solid results with Stihl for reliable firewood cutting and general property work. It's cool that you collect the older Jonsereds models - they don't make them like they used to!

Ive /had Stihl and a Sachs Dolmar chainsaws
But now Ive an electric batterie chainsaw and dont want the old loud and smelly combustion engines anymore.
but for longer work I need them.
A friend of mine has a large landscaping company. In 80% of all cases where a chainsaw is needed, his employees use battery saws.I think they are using Makita saws.

I recently got a battery powered chainsaw and an electric pruning attachment for my string trimmer that has made tree pruning and shooting lane clearing so much quieter and easier that they have become my go to tools. Mine are made by Milwaukee I always bring extra batteries but rarely need them. My poulan chainsaw is getting jealous and upset with me.

They all leak!

A hard "case", then that has to be cleaned.

Used Blankets/Towels in the back of a car.

I’ve also had good luck with Stihl’s. My fathers had a 290 for decades. I bought a 291 - and had it stolen out of my garage. Have a variety of other smaller stihl saws and other products that have been flawless - though not cheap…

That’s what I do as well haha. Stihl 462cm in the trunk of a Lincoln sedan with a 20” and a 32” bar with a few chains in a leather bag with my scrench. Helps that the carpet in my trunk is black. I’ve also noticed that some bar oils are way leakier than others. The cheap stuff leaks like crazy but the stihl stuff doesn’t leak much at all. The stihl winter/cold weather stuff leaked (in my saw at least) the least of any I’ve used, at least in the cold weather I use it in

Ha, black interior, no doubt. Seats fold down for 32's, nestle in just fine.
Very cool .. good to know.

@375Ruger416 .. indeed, an item for theft. Garage, Pick Up's .. sorry for the loss! people.

I was embarrassed to even post this.
But "Ironic, a Chainsaw Thread"

While I know this question is about what type of chain saw to buy given, I have cleared over 10 acres with a chain saw and my own dozer the most valuable thing to me were the protections that people think they can take a short cut at their peril. Please remember to buy the chaps, the vest and the helmet with face mask. I cannot count the times due to my being exhausted that I made a slight mistake and my protection equipment saved me...it happens. Please everyone make the small investment in this safety equipment then use them!!!

Working tired is a big mistake in the timber. As you say mistakes happen a lot easier when exhausted, so we head home if too tired to work safely. No job is worth your life, safety equipment or not.

Yep, they all leak bar oil, some more than others. Just got mine ready for winter. I use no ethanol gas and run a little stabil thru them before putting up for longer hibernation. No big deal getting them ready for storage and both are ready to go on short notice if needed.

Have cut a knee cap and top of leg with a chainsaw. But chainsaws are somewhat slow cutting, a good thing, unlike a table saw blade which “pulls” itself into the cut at high RPM. Operator fatigue and kick back are, IMO, the most critical things to guard against when operating a chainsaw.
