Caliber 30-30 use in Africa???

Put this on takeri photos thread if I remember correctly..but as its a thread on 30-30 for use in African hunting thought would add it here...shot it running off at an angle ..can't remember distance but around 60 yards plus...it piled up instantly...took another 2 for staff rations as Christmas treat

I dont know if I mentioned it but the owner of one of the farm I hunt on has this wierd old bolt action 30-30 that he uses for camp meat.
Mostly wildebeest.
50-70m in the thick stuff, it works.
Why would a lever gun not do the same.

At one stage Remington made the 788 in 30-30 that was extremely accurate.

Several years back, I turned one down that was mint conditioned....$300 at a gun show because I was looking for a lever action. I've made more than one dioic decision in my lifetime!

I brought a Marlin transition model 36/336 Sporting Carbine in .30-30 to RSA in '89.
Shot a vervet monkey w/ it.
Sold it and regretted it.
Just bought a replacement, a 1950 336 Sporting Carbine.
Then broke my wrist so it'll be a while till I shoot it!

The Winchester Model 54 is the classic choice for a 30-30 bolt action.
I have one that is a bit of a mongrel and am always looking for a really nice one to replace it.

The 30-30 really blooms with a wider choice of bullets rather than those appropriate for a lever action.

Several bolt .30-30's have been made over the years, the 788 you reference, the Win 54, the Savage Model 340. The latter actually does sort of fit the descriptor of..."weird". :ROFLMAO:

The savage 325 also was available in 30-30, the early barrels were 30 cal. machine gun barrels new old stock from ww2. Savage also made a pump action 30-30 the model 170 as well as the 219 single shot. The model 170 in my experience was prone to poor triggers and extraction issues.

Is that the model that was 30-30 and came with a 20ga barrel?

I remember my grandfather’s neighbor having a pump action 30-30 and thought it was weird then he pulled out the 20ga barrel and it blew my mind way back then.

I’ve never seen one with a 20 gauge barrel or heard of it. I have heard rumours that they could be ordered with .410 barrels but have never seen documentation or a set to prove it. I find it hard to believe a rifle capable of extracting 30-30 shells could be made to extract 20 gauge shells given the massive difference in rim size.

I concur, but I know what I saw.

I have a friend that loads quality .308 pointed bullets for his 30-30 like accubonds, sciroccos etc.

He just uses his rifle as a 2 shot. 1 in the chamber and 1 in the magazine so there's no issues with the tip resting on a primer in the magazine. Just a thought if you wanted to load better/ different bullets.

Cheers

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?
