I think they are underrated. I am surprised how many people I have met that say they think they are ugly and aren't interested in them at all.

I will say that I think greater than 90% of taxidermy mounts of them don't do them justice. For some reason they always look very different to me once mounted.

That is a great point. I don't like the taxidermy of them at the local Cabelas. Doesn't look right to me.

They are pretty interesting to observe live in the field. I like to watch them down in the reeds and tall grass. Beautiful animals and they taste fine if you avoid the grease on their hide/hair.

I thought my mount turned out pretty well. One thing I’ve noticed is on the waterbuck in the Eastern Cape are not quite as dark or vividly marked as the waterbuck in the Limpopo, Northwest provinceor Mozambique

Waterbuck are my favorite PG. Is there a consensus on the number one place to go after a trophy Waterbuck?
I don’t know about a consensus, but I know when I hunted buffalo adjacent Kruger I’d have traded my buffalo permit for a waterbuck permit for some of the waterbuck I saw and I took a huge buffalo.

What I feel like seems to get lost the most in the vast majority of mounts is the prominent bulges under the horns on the forehead area. A mature old waterbuck seems to have those, and very few mounts seem to. And also, there is something about how red they look in the face out in the field and in many trophy photos. And then on most mounts I feel like it somehow loses that. Maybe it is something about artificial vs. natural light bringing out their colors.

Thanks all some toads among them.
@KMG Hunting Safaris Marius if I get time I will definitely check the bases first.
But the bull must be one that stands out that you should not guess I have after all the luxury to have more chances going after one at short notice.

@IvW interesting horn configuration what did it measure?

I took this bull around 11 years ago in an orange grove, just across the river from Botswana.

Left horn 32 3/4 Right horn 32 1/4 both bases 10 inches

I have shot 2. The first one was in Namibia and truth be told was probably a bit young, but it was during covid and it was my first trip. I didn't know any better other than to just shoot what I was told to. The second one was ancient, ribs and shoulder blades were visible. Very different trophies but I am proud of both.

It seems to be difficult to find bulls with evenly matched horns. I have also seen quite a few with broken horns. My PH said they are hard on fences. Just tear them up if they want to go through. Waterbuck are larger than I expected. Heavy bodied. Somewhere between mule deer and elk in size. They are an odd skull to mount. Really have to tip the nose out or horns project into the room.
Not hard to tell when waterbuck are nearby. They stink!

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!
