Hi everyone,
Looking for advice on optics for my cz 550 416 Rigby.
It will be my first African hunt, hunting buffalo and plains game.
Has anyone got any feedback on the vortex 1-8x24 scopes?
All advice much appreciated.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the Vortex brand stemming from failures on two different RDO’s.

If you are on a budget (and most of us are) the entry level for scopes for DG would be a Leupold VX3-HD 1.5-5x20. Or if you want to step up a bit, the Trijicon AccuPoint 1-4x24 or 1-6x24 would be great.

Look at Talley or Warne for QD mounts that will go from the scope directly to your double square bridge.

Hunting DG is not the time to be skimping on your gear.

Thank you for your reply.
Yes, definitely going for the warne QD mounts.
I'll have a look at the trijicon scopes. Not sure of their availability in the UK.

Vortex is great. I personally went with the Trijicon Accupoint 1-6 that I picked up from GB for a good deal. Good luck!

Karl Kaps, Germany makes good optics. Does not break the bank and quality German optics. You can get those probably in the UK. Got myself a 2-8 magnification. Great glass and not too expensive. For what you hunting I would go with the 1-4 magnification. But you got also get the 2-8 . Is for me the allround choice.

It may sound shocking but on DG setups, a lot of people might spend as much on the scope as the rifle or much more than you might think. I put a Nightforce NX8 1-8x on my 416 Remington and a Swaro Z8i or Z6i on my 416 Rigby. Both are illuminated reticles and I wouldn't have a DG scope without an illuminated reticle (for many reasons).

It's not about some kind of flex to spend $, it's about having something that I have a lot of confidence in due to quality. Wounding or missing DG is expensive and possibly very dangerous to myself and others. I don't go cheap on optics or bullets. It's the cheapest part of the hunt but the biggest effect to a hunt's outcome.

I've owned one Vortex.

It wouldn't hold zero.

I'd start with a Leupold VX3-HD 1.5-5x20 and go up from there if you can afford it.

Shit the bed, I'll take my chances. £2500 for the trijicon ain't for me
FFS that's a lot

i like VORTEX...I had a STRIKE EAGLE 1-6 X 24 was very good, if you go up with the VIPER SERIES, they are around 750-850 eur here in Spain

Leupold Mark 3 hd-1,5-4 x 20 are around 900-1000 eur

Aother option tht is working relly well is VECTOR CONTINENTAL, I had one (2-12 x 50) mounted in the 338 win mag nad works flawles
1-6 and 1-8 x 24 around 500 eur

Currently on my MRC I have a Trijicon RMR but I have been contemplating putting my Leupold VX 6 1-6x24 that is on my .375 Ruger and putting a Leopold 2-10 on the .375.
I’m got a leupold 2-7x24 on a 375 ruger, it cam off my .270 featherweight
Love the low light reticle and it’s tough as nails
Great hunting scope imo $200

Buy the best scope you can afford, Vortex will let you down,...they do have a great warranty, because you'll need it. Leupold is a solid bet if you can fit a 1.5-5 or 2.5-8. I just picked up a Swarovski Z3 3-9x36 for $700 that has really impressed me so far, and it would fit on that action.

The Leupold 2-7 scope will not work on a CZ 550 Magnum, the tube is not long enough to be mounted on Talley or Warne rings, too much distance between the double square bridges of the rifle. Tube length needs to be at least 5.31”/13.5 cm long. Also ring height can be a factor, too low and the bolt will not clear the scope.

To the OP, please search and locate the thread by AH member, One Day, he provides some very comprehensive information on scoping a CZ 550 magnum rifle. Not all scopes will work with this rifle due to the action length. I have used Warne Medium 1 inch rings to mount Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 and Leupold Vari XIII 1.5-5x20 on my CZ 550 416 Rigby. I presently have a 30mm Leupold Vari-XIII 1.5-5x20mm Illuminated duplex with medium Warne 30mm rings mounted to my CZ 416 Rigby.

I use Swarovski's on my .416's. Various depending on quest, but always Swarovski. My favorite is the Z6i 1.7-10x42

Yeah the 375 ruger fits the standard action, that 416 rigby is way too long for a compact scope

I've been exclusively a Leupold guy for 50 years and yet to have a failure.

With that said I wanted something they don't make and something that's not as expensive as a rifle so I thought I would give this Sig Sauer 1x8 a try on my 416 Rigby Ruger rifle.

I'm going to start shooting with it next week.

I can't get myself to spend thousands on European glass. Maybe I'll regret it, maybe I won't.

I like to run quick release levers on the off side, away from the bolt and feeding.

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
