ZIMBABWE: First Hunt In Africa, First Hunting Report, Dalton & York Safaris

Great! I’m at the ATL airport now, waiting for my long flight to begin. Headed back to Zim for Elephant Bull and Buffalo. Hopefully D&Y will deliver again!

Headed To Mateke Hills This Friday. Has Anyone Ever Hunted There?

Thanks! They told me that it can be a big mature bull with damaged or broken tusks. Not sure what else factors in with regards to tusk weight, etc. I’ve never shot a bull elephant, just a tuskless cow, so I’m hoping it will be a good experience. As for buffalo, I’m treating it as a “just in...

Dalton and York. They said it will be thick this time of year, but supposed to be plenty of elephant. I’ll be hunting non trophy bulls.

Headed To Mateke Hills This Friday. Has Anyone Ever Hunted There?

As the title suggests, I’m leaving this Friday to hunt Bull Elephant and Cape Buffalo in an area called Mateke Hills. This is in southern Zimbabwe. I’m told this is a good area for Elephant and would like to know if anyone here has hunted there before. Any experiences and observations would be...

    Favorite caliber for cape buffalo?

Of the 8 buffalo that I’ve taken, I’ve used 375 H&H, 416 REM Mag, 458 Win Mag and 470 Nitro. IME, shot placement has been more important than the caliber I was using. Every time I’ve put the bullet where it’s supposed to go, the result has been the same.

    Turkey Calls

I carry a slate call and a couple of mouth calls. But my most important asset is a good pair of running shoes.

    My baby got a haircut

Just for the record, I’ve never used a suppressor on a DG rifle. But I do use them on my deer/varmint guns, when I don’t have to carry them a lot to get to my hunting destination. I find the added weight and length up front to very very cumbersome unless I’m just hunting out of a blind or deer...

    My baby got a haircut

If it were my rifle, (and it isn’t), I’d have the front sight put back on it, and then just use the suppressor for range work. I’d take it off for hunting buffalo. All of my buffalo hunting has been done in extremely thick cover, so the 20” barrel would be good for that.
