I Love Weatherby's
Mark V or Vanguards, it doesn't matter to me.
I once bought a .300 WBY Mag Mark V Euromark with the barrel shot out (even though it looked brand new), spent stupid $ on trying to make it shoot right, then finally had it rebarreled to .257 WBY mag.
It now shoots perfectly...
To be contrary.....
I LIKE them
Got:
2 - Older, tang-safety models in .243 Winchester - one has been flawless, the other (a BNIB RSI) had to be sent back because of extraction issues
1 - "boat paddle" in .338 Win Mag - flawless
All are accurate.
If I had to leave within the next two weeks:
Weatherby Mark V Euromark in .300 WBY Mag.
CZ550 in .416 Rigby
If given several months to think about it, there's no telling what I might decide.
IMO -
If I wanted knives to pass down as heirlooms, I would order Randall's.
If I wanted to pass down knives that I have used, I would give my Buck Kalinga and my Browning Sportsman 4518.
What you experienced was very typical of the Rocky Mountain states (except urban Colorado), the mid-western states, and the South Eastern states.
Afrikaaners would fit in almost perfectly with the people in the SE USA.
Your absolutely right.
Nothing fancy. Just plain, straight walnut.
Hardly anyone will spend "big money," on this type of DR, but many guys would like to own one.
Just get them regulated on a common factory load (Remington .44 Mag - 240g JSP) and call it a day.
I think a modest powered big-bore DR would be preferable to a small bore DR because of the range.
IMHO, a small bore shines at distance. A larger bore shines at close range.
(.41 Rem Mag, .44 Rem Mag, .45 Long Colt, .45/70 Government would sell like hotcakes, if the price was right...
