As someone who has half baked considered adding a rifle in one of these cartridges to the collection, it appears that the 500 Jeffery is the easier path to take. More factory rifles available in it, easier to convert existing actions to 500J v 505 Gibbs etc.

Full house Norma 500 Jeffery rounds out of a 9.0 lb Sako remains to be the absolute most brutal "sporty" recoil I have ever experienced.

Just goes to show that despite the 458 WM's reputation on this forum as being a "pea-shooter" it really needs to be in an appropriately weighted rifle to tame that recoil.
I think a 458WM should weigh 10.0lbs minimum which would reduce that recoil to ~64 ft-lbs.
My svelte 458WM weighs 8.6lbs...
I believe the argument was not only related to the increased recoil, but the increased rifle weight as well which is becoming too cumbersome to carry on safari.

Just repeating what I've heard stated by several of the Pros now that the 577NE is the upper limit of what is still usable in a hunting rifle to carry. The idea is that the 600NE, 700NE, 577 T-REX, 600 Overkill etc. are beyond that limit and are purely exercises in exuberance.
