Leupold CDS setting recommendations for a .375 H&H

It all depends on the amount of geographical difference. Running the variance accounting for elevation, pressure, humidity, and temperature between my cabin in MN and where I hunted in SA in January today, at 350 yards you have a 4.4 inch difference which rises to 7.3 inches at 400 yards for a...

Leupold CDS setting recommendations for a .375 H&H

I think you make a great point here which needs to be reiterated, in that the atmospherics of your hunt location are likely going to be very different from your zero geography (living in Minnesota and hunting in Mozambique for example) and that's going to throw off your CDS. Get a good ballistic...

    But how does it taste?

My favorite meat from my first safari was Eland closely followed by Kudu. Wildebeest, Impala, Blesbok, and Bushbuck were all quite good. I didn't like the Fallow as much but that was more I think due to expecting it to taste like white tail and it tasted more like lamb. The Fallow was in velvet...

Optic for .404 Jeffery - Variable Scope vs Red Dot

I already have the Schmidt & Bender with great illumination if I choose to go with a scope.

Optic for .404 Jeffery - Variable Scope vs Red Dot

I've shot it without a pad just using the hard horn buttplate that was on there, it's by no means unshootable but definitely not something I want to have a prolonged range session with. And given that it's been re-stocked (safari accident in the 70's in Kenya) I don't have any qualms about...

Optic for .404 Jeffery - Variable Scope vs Red Dot

I've also considered leaving as is (+ recoil pad, I'm not a masochist). There's a romance to leaving the metalwork the same as it was when it left W. J. Jeffery ~100 years ago.

Installing a 3 position safety along with a recoil pad.

Optic for .404 Jeffery - Variable Scope vs Red Dot

I came into possession of a vintage .404 Jeffery that I plan on using for cape buffalo on my next trip to Africa. Wondering about the best optic to use for this given its intended purpose. I currently have a S&B Stratos 1.5-8x42 that I'd been planning on putting in Recknagel pivot mounts, with...

    2024 Deer Season

Made the drive up to Hot Springs, Arkansas this year for my first AR whitetail. In retrospect, using a .300 win mag for a 30 yard shot in thick woods was not the smartest decision from a meat perspective but probably better than the .404 Jeffery I thought about taking.

    Safari shirt?

I really like the Poncho outdoors shirts as well for hot weather, perfect for a summer safari or for general stuff around the ranch here in TX. I know they make some heavier duty shirts but haven't tried them out yet. Ball and Buck makes a solid shirt as well.

What boots are PH's wearing these days?

I have these as well and took them to the eastern cape in January. Not the right boot for the terrain I was in but I've liked them in the TX hill country well enough for summer / fall ranch activities. Definitely make sure to waterproof them as they will soak through in morning dew.

    A modernized 416

I think the McMillan safari comes in at ~33oz while the Manners comes in around 27. My personal thought here would be that a bit more weight might make it more balanced, but that also depends on your barrel contour. McMillan also does the molded in McWalnut / McWoody finish that I think would...

    A modernized 416

The CDG is a great action, as is the previously mentioned Mausingfield (albeit at a higher price point) Griffin and Howe is building a lot of their new rifles on ARC actions and while admittedly I've only played with a Weatherby 307 briefly, I think you'll be much more satisfied with the ARC...
