Which Double Rifle Caliber is worth the investment in 2023?

Pardon the late reply. You may have answered all of your questions with your question. Another factor to include is mental. Also, weight, on occasion = insurance. Yes, I've used both .450's, the no.2 shell and the 3 1/4", and prefer the latter which I still have, but the .577 is a stone wall...

Which Double Rifle Caliber is worth the investment in 2023?

My final double before I leave this earth will be a second, and final for me, .577....if that says anything. Useful or practical for many?.....no, not at all. But the .577 literally exudes by-gone days like heart-felt tears of love. You could probably put a jar underneath to catch them. No other...

505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

I'd rather have a .505, and thinking of getting one. Nothing fancy this go-around, just a plain and simple .505 in a p-14 maybe. Something I don't have to worry about in the thorns. But I want it as slick feeding as I can get it. The .500 Jeffery rebated rim always bothered me by looking at it...

Why no love for the .358 Win?

I do love the thump as well. Given that my ranges never exceed iron sight capability and never will, (I'm not a scope person, in 50 years have never needed one and I wear corrective lenses), it's good for me. I will say, if I ever needed more range, I might change my perspective. I've always...

    To English Red or not

Years ago, I heard a rumor that Duane Wiebe's English Red consisted of a portion of red food coloring. I'd give money to know his recipe. Could have been just a rumor, I don't know.

Why no love for the .358 Win?

I love my new lady, a Husky 146 FN98 in 9.3x57. Unmolested, untapped, no attachments, no drama. Straight off the shelf 1940. I'll do a write-up when I get everything squared away, but honestly, I don't think anyone that has ever used a 9.3x57 would even consider changing to .358 Win. I like her...

Large magnum rifle primers - brand preference?

Fed 215 I use in all my nitro's, but maybe because it's all I have and all anyone had when I needed them.

    Bertram Brass Quality?

I've never actually had a problem with them either, in .450 no.2, and .600, going back ages, but I still agree with the muzzleloader thing, if only due to what you get for the insane price. When I looked at and held my first Jamison .450 case, I remember having felt cheated all my life. I've...

    8 bore black powder cartridges

You hit the nail on the head. They are short for caliber. That's one reason. Another, at least from what I gather, is being that they were special use/made and proprietary from different makers, with variations in bore size, there was not a special mold-cherry that the tool and mold maker would...

    8 bore black powder cartridges

I like beeswax and olive oil, 50/50, adjusted up or down for whatever climate one is in. Works good for smokeless as well, up to 1850fps.... But there are millions of lube recipes out there, and it gets to be ridiculous on the forums. The above is about as simple as it gets. The 50/50 is for...

    8 bore black powder cartridges

Forgot to add, the fiber wads you split in half and punch. You can't really punch a whole one that is 1/2" thick, so just split it in half with a knife, then punch, and then put back together. Actually, you can just punch one of the halves, then put back together, and the ball will rest and be...

    8 bore black powder cartridges

P.S.~ the roll crimp....the ball will have to have a 'very' slight roll crimp around its equator, and I do it with a 5/8" brass flare cap in the press, 12-bore fits right in, but I have no idea at all how to do it on an 8-bore case, unless your gun came with its loading tools. You may be able to...

    8 bore black powder cartridges

I was using a fiber wad from Circle Fly, but now might move to felt if I can find any or may simply cut them myself. I lost the bag of the old ones I had (still an unexplained and mysterious disappearance). I would just use a hole punch, but the recent ones I got are a different fiber material...

    8 bore black powder cartridges

I'm surprised no-one has replied to this. Originals had a wad over powder and a second wad in the form of a donut for the ball to rest in. The second wad was lubricated around the edge with a secretive it seems lube, probably of paraffin/Vaseline/beeswax mixture after the tallow fiasco in India...

    Bertram Brass Quality?

This is what I'm mainly referring to. When you pay $200 a box for (20) .600 Nitro cases (a decade ago-not sure what they cost now) and you see this, you'll know what I'm talking about. Also notice the headstamps look like someone used a chisel. They just are what they are.
