Is there an "All around powder?"

I have over 60 powders on hand, and have worked with those and quite a few more. Off the top of my head, standouts to me that give respectable performance in a lot of calibers: Varget, H4350, RL16, CFE223, 2000MR and Staball 6.5. Varget, H4350, RL16 and Staball 6.5 are all very temp stable...

    Judging Waterbuck

Forgot about this thread by the time I got my crate but it popped back up. Bases are both a tick over 10 inches, he scores 80.5 on my wall!

    Mossberg Patriot 375 Ruger??

I also don't know why anyone would market a 6.5 lb .375 Ruger. Savage, and other manufactures at times have put heavy actions in incompatible stocks. But I disagree with your generalization that the design is not up to the task, in my experience that is not the case. I have had great results...

Sorry If This Is A Dumb Question About 35 Whelen

Plenty for big bears as long as you are a hand loader. For some reason and I have heard multiple theories, factory 35 Whelen ammo is loaded well below max pressures. For example Norma has a factory load with the 250gr Oryx listed at 2,400 fps. I don't have any trouble getting 2,700 fps plus with...

    35 Whelen

I have been a fan of the 338WM for 40 years and will always have a couple in the safe. Just started working with the 35 Whelen a couple of years ago. Here are my go to loads: 35 Whelen 25in 1/12 barrel 245gr Hammer Stone Hammer @ 2862 FPS Energy at the muzzle 4,450 ft lbs At 600 yards 1,720fps...

High end bolt vs low end double

This is an interesting thread! I only became interested in hunting Africa a few years ago and am hooked. I have been twice and plan to go many more times, already have the next trip booked. But I have no desire to own a double, or even a "high end" bolt gun. Its personal with me. I own a whole...

    I'll always have both!

    Maximum point blank range

This exactly. That +3 at 100 is usually around a 275yd zero. I do need to know the distance of my shot. I never shoot more than 400, rarely beyond 300. No dial twisting needed.

    35 Whelen

Yep! With the same bullet, RP Brass, 60gr of 8208 XBR I get 2950 fps with a 25in 1/12 barrel. But my favorite 35 Whelen load, 245gr Hammer Stone Hammer, 66.2 gr of Alliant 2000 MR at 2808 fps. If you have not tried Hammer bullets yet you need to.

    35 Whelen

You are a fan of published data, according to multiple sources for bullets up to 250gr the 35 Whelen out performs the 9.3x62. Not much out there for the 35 Whelen past 250gr, different story for the 9.3x62, plenty of published data for bullets up to 300gr and beyond, but why? I want something...

    35 Whelen

    No argument there.

    35 Whelen

I find I often stop before the published max loads. There are MANY bullet/powder combos never put in a book.

    35 Whelen

So here is my perspective, there IS some mystical sweet spot that the 35 Whelen achieves. I own four 35 Whelen rifles. When I first started visiting this site I owned zero. One of my early interactions on this site was in response to one of Bob's posts, I informed him that it was impossible to...
