I posted this a couple of years ago, I still wear this watch, Original GMT Master over 1/2 the time. I have owned it for well over 30 years. Also have the original box and paperwork. It was purchased new in Hong Kong for the equivalent of $167 USD. It has been back to Rolex many times for...
I know some one already mentioned it. Look at the Howa 1500 Superlite. It comes in .308, 7mm-08 and 6.5CM. 4lbs 7oz with a 20 in barrel or 4lb 3oz with a 16in barrel, and its already threaded 1/2x28. I would get the 20in, why give up performance with calibers that are on the low end of what is...
The "what if my ammo gets lost" justification for not traveling with a Whelen or some other cartridges has never made sense to me, its too easy to mitigate the issue. I travel with two rifles, different calibers. 50rd boxes of ammo with 1/2 and 1/2 of each cartridge are packed in two different...
Black WIldebeast for sure! I believe they are only native to parts of South Africa though thay have been introduced in other areas. Kudu, Waterbuck, Red Hartebeast, Springbok and Imapla would be good choices also.
The Terminal Accent and Trophy Bonded Tip are among my very favorite bullets. I have used a bunch of them in .308 and 30-06. Great consistent performers.
When I first read Bobs posts about the .35 Whelen a while back I was very skeptical. My first reply was to state what seemed to be obvious to me, there is no way you can cram enough powder into a 30-06 case to drive those heavy bullets that fast.
I now own three .35 Whelen rifles and have...
338-06AI is a Win Mod 70 with a 22inch proof barrel, twist rate is 1/9.4.
185gr Barnes TTSX goes 3089fps using A2520.
186gr Hammer Stone Hammer goes 3127 using A2520.
Not sure about the 210gr Barnes. I have worked up a 213gr Hammer bullet for the 338-06AI. Getting 2900 fps with 2000MR.
Legit point about availability of ammo in Africa, .35 Whelen might be impossible to find. But for me its kind of a mute point because shooting my own loads no matter the caliber is as important to me as shooting my own rifle. If my ammo gets lost in route I'll just shoot a loaner rifle.
30-06 based cartridges are the best! I shoot and reload for the 25-06, 280AI, 30-06, 338-06AI and 35 Whelen. Next is going to be a 375/06 Improved!
I own a 7mm Rem Mag and a .300 WM and a .338 WM. I never mess with the belted magnums anymore because of my obsession with the 06 based stuff. It...
Shoot a 245gr .358 bullet at 2836fps (Hammer "Stone Hammer")
Shoot a 250gr .358 bullet at 2720fps (Norma "Oryx")
And why would anyone choose a 300WM? What will it do that a .338WM will not?
What you say is correct, that stuff helps. But Its hard to use the correct technique and form in a tree stand when a buck comes in at the wrong angle from the wrong direction, you have a bunch of clothes on and have been sitting in 18 degrees for three hours. One adrenaline powered draw cycle in...
Drop your poundage, work on your skills. Same advise I give everyone who walks in to the shop and the first concern they have is more lbs or more speed. I have been involved in archery for 40 plus years, now that I am retired my hobby job is working as a bow tech. Does not matter who you are...
