This can sometimes be a controversial subject. Some folks have powerful feelings about their guns.
So my caveats are that I am not making a recommendation, only offering information, and everyone else's experiences are just as valid; I am not trying to argue with anyone. With that, I have...
I use everything from a Remington 870 Sportsman that I bought in 1984 to my Caesar Guerini Invictus V, and I have had to use both as canoe paddles/push polls on occasion. I've also used a whole bunch of other shotguns in between.
I use whatever I happen to have on hand, or borrow, depending on...
Welcome - to the rabbit hole (hunting and the AH community).
I joined here about 16 years ago to get information on my "once in a lifetime" and "only" African safari.
Then from the shadows someone whispered "no one goes to Africa just once." But I was going to be different - only going once...
I hunted in November. It was very good. I took a nice Chamois as well. In 3.5 days of hunting I personally saw 13 bears. We did a traditional driven hunt, and it was very interesting and fun. Think deer drive only with bears (and every other critter in Romania). It close encounter, active...
I hunted bears with Marius last fall. You definitely want to get in on this hunt.
There are a lot of bears in Romania. You see a lot, its very exciting and different than anything else in bear hunting. The food and accommodations are great, and unlike Alaska (which I love), Romania is also...
The rifle on the left is a working class Merkel, leaning up against the same tree as a custom made Perugini and Visini. You can see the P&V again leaning up against the elephant, sitting next to the bolt action Kimber (I think it's a Kimber anyway).
The P&V cost more than my first house (by...
Well, for the first time in a long time that I do not have any African or European hunts planned. Going to do some fishing this year.
Christmas Island in Kiribati in April from some bonefish and maybe (we'll try) for GTs on the fly.
Iceland in late June for the char and brown trout fishing...
I’m actually in Romania right now, just finishing up a Carpathian Chamois and Brown Bear hunt with Marius at @HUNTROMANIA. I will do a full report of my hunt when I get back to the U.S.
Romania is excellent hunting. Varied terrain, numerous large areas to hunt, and a lot of game. We did see...
Yes. Yes they do.
I've only done 22 African hunts, but in that time I have never been in DG Country with a PH that was not carrying an adequately sized gun. Many/most farms in RSA also have Buffalo, which is always a DG animal. So in my experience they have guns.
Yep. I would not say it was dangerous, but it happens.
You can bump into a lot of things while hunting in Zim; including that time I nearly fell onto a hippo while sliding down a muddy bank looking at crocs - but that's not PG hunting either.
I also nearly urinated on a lion while hunting PG...
Very well done. Good report.
I really enjoy hunting in Europe. Slovenia is actually among my favorite places on Earth. The fly fishing is excellent as well.
I am headed to Romania in a few weeks for the Carpathian Chamois and Euro Brown Bear. Hopefully do as well as you did.
I am however...
You have some very good advice in the earlier posts. Which can mostly be summarized as "take what the bush provides."
If you like to plan and research (and if you are on this site asking questions, you probably do), here is a suggestion I started a while ago.
Step 1, communicate with PH about...
