    Getting Attacked

Nov 1978: I was 13 and had just gotten into predator calling and furs were high. I was using a 22LR ( the next thing up was a 30-30 and far too tough on pelts). I called in a bobcat and shot it at 50 yds. It went down and seemed to be in the death throes; I was excited and quickly got up and...

Show your Ruger M77 african groups

These are two 100 yd groups with my 270 African. They are both 140 gr loadings; the tight group was with a fine-haired Swaro I use to develop loads while the second was with a 1-6 heavy duplex scope I use for “hunting”. I love the rifle but wish it wasn’t so heavy…close to 9 lbs with a scope.

Preferred Plains and NA All-Around Stalking Rifle Weights and Glass - Not a Cartridge/Caliber Question

Steve - I have a couple of other Tikkas besides this one. I have put Bell & Carlson stocks on them. The fit well, look great, and weigh 2.2 lbs, only a few ounces more than the OEM Tikka plastic stock.

Preferred Plains and NA All-Around Stalking Rifle Weights and Glass - Not a Cartridge/Caliber Question

Interesting, I cut, threaded, and cerakoted a Tikka T3x 308 down to 18” ( I didn’t have the guts to go shorter). It is 23” with suppressor. I’m about to work up some loads specifically for it. What bullets are you shooting in your brush guns? Velocities? Thanks

Preferred Plains and NA All-Around Stalking Rifle Weights and Glass - Not a Cartridge/Caliber Question

MDwest - you and my brother are in the same camp regarding rifles. LIGHT and SHORT and preferably 308! My first deer and predator rifles were Rem 660s, in .222 and .308 with 20” barrels. I still have them and shoot them some. We loved the short barrels and thought they were light, and they were...

Preferred Plains and NA All-Around Stalking Rifle Weights and Glass - Not a Cartridge/Caliber Question

dchum, Thanks. I saw that thread but it was far more about caliber and cartridge instead of dimensions. I was curious about the dimensions of the stalking rifles folks prefer carry and not the caliber /cartridge, thus I didn’t state mine.

Preferred Plains and NA All-Around Stalking Rifle Weights and Glass - Not a Cartridge/Caliber Question

Gents: I'm wondering about what your favored rifle weights and glass are for stalk hunting Plains Game and NA big game such as deer, antelope, and elk. I like to walk and stalk sometimes several miles. (I did about a 2 miler yesterday evening hunting hogs.) I know if one favors big magnums...

    Browning X-Bolt 2 Maple Hunter 308 Win

Yesterday I acquired a new Browning A-Bolt 2 AAA Maple Hunter in .308 Win; I swapped a rifle that I've owned a few years, but never really warmed up to. My brother has an older Micro Medallion that I like. My only issue with the old Brownings was that I had to put it on FIRE to cycle the...

Courteney Canvas Boots -- Yep Another Boot Thread

I looked on the Rigby website and did not see them. You wouldn’t happen to have a link? Thanks

    How much do you practice?

I’m retired, handload, and like shooting. The main rifles I shoot are 308, 270, 30-06, 6.5CM, 222, and recently, 7-08. Base on my Large Rifle, Small Rifle, and Small Rifle Magnum primer count, I ran thru just under 1000 rounds in the last year. Probably 50% off a bench for load development...

    Hunting vehicles

For 95% of my local hunting (within 75 miles or so), shooting, and running around, I use my little red ‘95 YJ. It has 125,000 original miles. For long trips, I use my Gladiator. But I love Little Red!

    7mm-08 Tikka: T3x Project

Good Evening Gents. I have an update. I began working with Hornady 162gr Interlock BTSP a few days ago. I used 4 powders (H-4350, Varget, Big Game, and StaBALL 6.5) and worked 11 different loads up. Observations: The gun did NOT like H-4350 under this bullet and shot 2 groups at 1.2" and...

    Jim Green Boots - Oil?

I use Fiebing’s saddle soap and saddle oil on all my things leather. Always works well. If you use these in combination, let the leather completely dry after the soap before using these saddle oil. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/fiebings-silicone-lanolin-saddle-oil

Scratching my head: 7x57 load development

FWIW, when developing loads, I first use an OAL gauge to determine the exact distance to the lands for each projectile. Next, I back off the lands 5 to 7 thousandths (sometimes the mag dictates my max length cause a cartridge longer than the mag doesn’t help much ). I then begin loading to...
