ZIMBABWE: Upwind Of Dinosaurs. Hunting Bull Elephant In Mateke Hills

Some really great photos . . . What were the tusk weights?

Zimbabwe Trophy Elephant Photo with Young Woman sitting on Elephant

The pair of tusks in the photograph very much appear to be the recognized world record tusks in the London Museum of Natural History, and the handwritten weights 214 & 226 lbs match the WR tusk weights. One has to wonder did the museum really avail the tusks for Peter Beard's photo session?, or...

    Good Lodging in Harare

I thought my experience during an overnight in Harare last week is worth sharing . . . "Guinea Fowl Rest" in the Borrowdale suburb. B&B $90. Everything totally clean, safe & secure, pool, honor bar, great breakfast, and staff Annette and Tonia were most helpful. I'll stay there again next...

    Tanzania in July

The way safaris are conducted in TZ is not conducive to what you describe. East African Greater Kudu (and Lesser Kudu for that matter), and Roosevelt Sable are considered "top shelf" trophies, are usually of very limited quota, and it is very unlikely that a safari operator could offer them on a...

Comment by 'Anbessa Gedai' in media 'Monster Warthog'

It sure is!! and NO shame in taking one with one broken tusk . . . it's a "natural occurrence", and the longer they get the more likely one will soonr or later break off . . . it's a great trophy!

Comment by 'Anbessa Gedai' in media 'Theodore Roosevelt with two big leopards'

It appears to me the photo may be a fabrication. The image of Roosevelt appears to be "added in". But if the photo is genuine, I believe it is not of two leopards, rather two jaguars and taken during Roosevelt's expedition in South America.

TANZANIA: Experience With Pano Hunting Safaris?

I saw Pano at "The Bar in Dar" at Slipway in Dar es Salaam back in December 2023. Though obviously not a youngster, he appeared to be enjoying life and in sufficient health that he might be able to conduct a safari that wasn't particularly strenuous. It has since transpired that Pano passed...

An Altitude Reality Check On Kilimanjaro: The Mountain Of Greatness

I've summited Kili' twice. First at age 35, and again at age 54. Both times taking the Marangu Route on a short timeline. . . five days on the mountain, three and a half days up, and a day and a half down. Both times I was living full time at ~8,000 feet in Addis Ababa and physically active...

    1914 H&H Sling Swivel problem

"SD", Let me say first . . . I am NO expert on early British rifles. Having said that, I would have thought H & H in 1914 was not sizing anything to a metric standard. I would also think you are wise not to modify the rifle, but just source a swivel assy that fits the barrel band attach point...
