Heavy Bullets in the 35 Whelen

Stands to reason Big Bob Nelson 35 Whelen's 310gr Woodleigh load is 25 fps faster than mine, it's his name for crying out loud.:D My rifle runs the 310gr Woodleigh out at 2425 fps over H-4350 powder. 250gr Norma Oryx at 2668 over CFE-223 270gr Northfork cup point solids at 2538 fps over...

Many thanks for the refresher and tutorial and pics good Sir Riflecrank, I remember as I was about to settle the rifle on the sticks taking a quick look back to make sure where my Wife was standing in what could have been the beginning of a hell of a rodeo in chest high thorns, she gave that...

Buffalo hunting with a .458 Win Mag

According to the Hammer bullet guys I was the first hunter out to test the 458 cal 404gr Hammer bullet on Cape Buffalo, my then load ran 2540 fps in a Model 70 Winchester built on a 375 H&H classic New Haven action, load COL was 3.585 inch. Cape Buffalo was on the list, when we arrived early...

.375H&H Barrel length… what say you?

My 1952 year Winchester 70 standard rifle with it's factory 25" barrel is perfect, doubly so for unscrewing the scope if need be and using that wonderful rocker rear barrel sight, all the way forward the 300gr CEB #13 solids at 2700 fps are dead on at 25 and 50 yards the best I can hold and...

    Double rifles and Elephant

Hagler450Ex, I agree, more people should take and hunt with their 577's, it is indeed a very specialized cartridge that takes an awful amount of self control to shoot well, and the physicality to carry it all day, I can do both, am basically lazy, but can work harden train getting ready for...

    Double rifles and Elephant

Houston Bill, I think what finally made up my mind was you CANNOT impress an Elephant, regardless of what you hit him with, we all know even a solid to the brain from Bells 6.5 and 7x57mm's got a lot done, even a 320gr Woodleigh solid on frontal brain from my 9.3x62mm at 2400 fps would be...

    Double rifles and Elephant

Mtn Infantry, I can tell you Gramps was born in 1922, he joined the Army in 1940, retired after 41 years in '81, he didn't talk much about it even though I always had ears wide open and mouth shut wanting to learn, I remember WW-II, Korea and 'Nam, he was a boot heel tough old bird, guessing a...

    Double rifles and Elephant

LOL VertigoBE, certainly not my intention to captivate, if degoins or Woodcarver wants to post up some pics I'll surely dig those two outta the safe for photos, the 577 is like a brand new sledge hammer with a black hickory handle, just a plain dark beast, the H&H is the honey colored beauty.
