beautiful rifle......is that his .318 Westley Richards?

The most interesting this about this picture is that Hemingway did not shoot that leopard. He was not successful on his leopard hunt at this time of this picture, so he just posed with a leopard shot by another person in his party (Mayito Menocal). He got his own three months later.

The gun in the picture is a Griffin & Howe 30.06 (SN 956) which he bought in 1930 for $256.50. It originally had a side mounted sight, but he took it off and never used it.

Two years after he committed suicide, Mary Hemingway consigned the gun to Abercrombie & Fitch to be sold for $150; however, she changed her mind and took it back. Eventually, she gave it to Patrick Hemingway, wcho hunting with it once (shooting a moose).

The gun was stolen from Patrick's home in Montana in the late 70's and has never been recovered. The rumor was that it was sent with a cache of weapons to the IRA.
