Funny story about that HR. From 1965 until 2014 a Savage 99 in .308 was his only hunting rifle. He even named it “Ol Meat in the Pot”. He’s shot hundreds of whitetails, several moose, a couple mulies and elk with it. I’ve shot a few deer with it as well as my brother. Then one day we went to Cabela’s to buy sausage making equipment. I was to buy the grinder and Dad the stuffer. Well we strolled by the rifle counter and this silly little Handi Rifle catches his eye. It also happened to be in .243 which he said he always wanted but he could never justify buying a second rifle as things were financially difficult through the 70s and 80s. He looked like he was going to say the same thing again but I told him he deserved it and not to worry about the stuffer, I’d pick one up another day. Damned if that little gun didn’t suit him like my BLR suits me… he just loves it!
