It emerged in the discussion Can plains game A Frames or TSX bullets be 30% lighter?https://www.africahunting.com/threads/can-plains-game-a-frames-or-tsx-bullets-be-30-lighter.45537/ that the preference of the US military for 190 gr bullets in the .300 Win has nothing to do with bullet weight concerns as apply to hunting.
Sniping is not hunting (regardless of what some 'hunting' videos would have people believe), and hitting reliably and consistently an 18" vital zone at 600, or 800, or whatever yards is a lot more difficult than many think, even with very specialized rifles. Those of us who actually own such rifles and actually shoot steel at measured 1,000 yd can attest that cold bore first shot hits on 18" plates from field positions at these distances are mighty rare indeed...
Luckily near misses do not result in crippled and lost steel plates!
This is a Mk13 US military special operations units' sniper rifle clone: .300 Win Mag in Remington Defense action and 5R barrel, bedded in an Accuracy International chassis, with a Vortex 6-24x50 30 mm tube 1st focal plan scope, mounted with Badger Ordnance rings on a 30 MOA rail.
Yep, it rings steel at 1,000 yd, and a bit beyond, but not every time from a cold bore - at least not with me ;-) and wind dope remains as much a black art as a science, Kestrel wind meter & weather station notwithstanding, especially in untested places as are most likely to be encountered while hunting...
