IMPORTANT: Firearms Export Alert – Use of Form 4457 for Temporary Firearms Export

just went last week in Sioux Falls , SD took longer to go from parking lot to the office than it took to get it signed. boy did he line out every available space on the form so nothing could be added later but no issues at all

If our Federal Government wasn't so big and disjointed, the ATF could authorize any Type 1 FFL to witness the rifle and sign and send a 4457 application to Customs on the owners behalf.

If only....
I spoke to Pittsburgh PA CBP today. Agent said go online, print out a current form, fill it out and bring the gun and form to airport office and they would stamp it. Seems pretty easy. We will see in March when I head there.

Exactly what I have done for the last four years..in and out. Downstate Illinois.

Anyone in Houston area had a new 4457 done lately? All I am getting is run around all this past week.
No body wants to do there job seems like.
Sugarland not doing them, flat out NO!
Can’t get ahold of anyone at big airports and don’t want make the 2 plus hour drive and not be able to get done. Friend drove up there this past week and was turned away because of no appointment. Was told appointments required and you can’t get hold of anyone on phone.

I will start calling farther south on Monday see if can find an office that will answer and is doing them I guess.

Just frustrating that they won’t do there jobs.

Sorry for the vent. But figured guys in this area might want to know.

Mark,
I'm guessing they are short staffed due to the illegal alien influx. Maybe try further north instead? Hope you get it sorted out.

Mark it is a bit of a drive but the Alliance Fort Worth airport CBP office was very friendly and professional. It took me all of 15 minutes, most of which was me and the officer talking guns and hunting.

Safe hunting

they're all instructed to do that! IF you take the very same items on diff safaris, I believe you can re-use the form. (That way you can't bring your PHs double back with you, nor can you trade him your fancy 7mm to pay off the final bill!) LOL

Go online complete the form all they have to do is sign and stamp. But I would contact my House Representative in DC and describe the problem and have them inquire as to the problem…bet you get some results.

@Mark Biggerstaff, I did a 4457 6 months ago at the Shreveport, LA Regional airport and it was a breeze. Aren't you in the El Campo, TX area? Have you tried the Freeport CBP office? Or Port Lavaca?

I imagine they told you they are available from 1:30 to 4:00PM daily, across from the Southwest check-in counter? I have the option of going to Pittsburgh, or Wilmington, NC when I am down there visiting my daughter, so I go to Wilmington as they are open 9-5, better hours for me. Good luck to you sir!!

@Andrew62.....amazingly verbatim! Wasn't in the office two minutes and I am not quite sure the officer even looked at the gun.

Well. Any one in Houston area that needs one done fast and with Friendly people!
Call Freeport Office!! I called them at 8:35 this morning and all he said was”How soon can you get here”. I drove the 2 hour one way as fast as I could!!!
Get guy and fast. All they ask is you have them pre printed and filled out!!
Will defiantly make that drive any time. Easy to get to office.

Good info. I just did the new form with the expiration date because I lost the old one. I'm going to Limpopo in June. I did mine at IAH in Houston and had no issues. Good folks, helpful and fast. Hopefully my return home is smooth.

@Nickcusato when you say you did your new form at IAH, the CBP office isn't actually at IAH is it? More like Beltway 8 (Sam Houston Fwy) service road????

It's in the airport. I printed the form at home, filled it out and went there with the firearms. They looked at the serial numbers and signed the form. Easy in and out in 20 minutes. Did have to pay for parking.

When you go to the CBP website, the 4457 form shows an expiration date of 9/30/2022. I'm hunting in October...does anyone have information regarding how often the form is updated online with later dates?

Usually months after the prior one is expired, unfortunately. This creates a perfect opportunity for your African customs and gun permit people to shake you down for a bribe for expired forms.

All I can say is keep looking at the CBP website for an updated form until the last possible moment when you go to get your guns inspected by CBP.

It used to be even worse, the CBP offices wouldn't accept the downloaded PDF templates and made you use their pre-printed pads that were at times 5-7 years past the expiration date on the bottom.

I am in the same boat and just decided to rent a firearm for my safari in October since I have 0 hope that the .gov will get a new form up before then

The 9/30/22 form is the most recent form. The Border Patrol Agent I spoke to said this is the form I need to return home on 10/1/22. I was also concerned, but she reassured me that the US could care less about the 9/30/22 date, that there is no expiration date on any Form 4457 so far as the US is concerned. And no one in South Africa ever looks at this form when you leave. All they check is the serial number on your gun. You are good to go!!

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
