240gr 30-06 - how would you use it?

I am curious what senarios (conditions or game) will the 240gr 30-06 provide real value over the 200gr or even 180gr? How much penetration do you really need on the game an '06 is good for?

Good grief, I didn't know you could get a 240gr .308 caliber bullet. Can't imagine using more than a 200gr bullet in the .30-06. But I'm far more curious to know if it could be shot accurately? It will be moving awfully slow and it's an awfully long bullet I'd guess, presenting stability issues.

Woodleigh bullets. I believe with 4350 it runs just under 2300 fps. Interestingly, I noted that they have a similar speed and SD to the 375 H&H 350 gr.

Still a 200 yard bullet I'd say. I'd guess you'd better have a higher than typical twist rate for it to stabilize, but you won't know until you give them a go.

Definitely short range, but I was just wondering if someone actually considered them for a particular hunt. e.g. Grizzly at 50 yards with an '06 sounds rather daring. It just seem to be a novelty.

Good medicine for northern whitetails in the timber. Slow expansion would lessen meat damage I'd bet.

For the majority of dangerous game that the 06 is suitable for I would stick with either a 200 or a 220 grain bullet but would prefer one between 180-200 grains

There are time that bigger may not always be better.

Not for me but if you really wanted to find a spot for them...... Probably if you really want to use your trusty old 30-06 up close on big critters. Bear on Bait... Maybe a bongo with dogs up close but through the greenery of those forests? Moose close in? And as a bear stopper where your not hunting them but need protection from them.

I don't know - Except Moz, couldn't legally take buff with it. On any of the PG (excepting maybe the bongo mentioned above) I'd rather have the range versatility of the tried and true 180. If I could afford a bongo, I sure wouldn't bring an '06 to the dance. And if I am counting on something to truly stop a bear (as opposed to shooting him) then I hope I was smart enough to bring along at least a .338.

I actually have a box of original Barnes bullets in .30 cal that weigh 250grs! Got them from a bunch of stuff from my brother who is getting out of shooting. They are for sale if anyone is interested.

This projectile was introduced a while back, apparently to provide hunters with a lighter cartridge option for hunting water buffalo in Northern Australia.

The 180 gr has worked and proven itself over and over again in the 06 on animals up to eland size I do not think it wil be a bullet for the 06 but can work and serve purpose if you use it in the 300 RUM that would give you a bit more velocity

I loaded and tested some a few years ago. Anyway, I loaded them up for a possible hunt in Australia for brombies, scrub bulls, and large pigs. This may still be happening after I retire in the next few years.

Sure, sure. Should provide great penetration on an eland . . . or twelve.

They are thumpers Phil! Haven't used them on game yet and may revisit it in the future along with a few other Woodleigh bullets to squeeze a little more performance out of them and possibly tighten up the accuracy some.

I have used the 300 wby extensively on African came and it is a awesome calibre that can reach out there beyond that 300yard mark without loosing performance but I use the Barnes ttsx 180 gr and they shoot great groups and run at 2950 fps

Haven't used heavy bullets in it yet would like to see how they work

I have some 250gr .30 cal bullets from Claw (local RSA manufacturer).
Bought them to play with out of my 300 H&H.. But haven't got round to loading any yet. My thinking was they would be a nice low velocity bush veld round. I was thinking 2300 at the top end, so the 06 pushing 240gr at almost 2500 got my attention! I bet those loads grab your attention in the Tikka lite!

I also have my doubts on the 250gr stabilizing in my std 1 in 10 gun, although it's actually a little shorter than a 200gr Accubond.
