Can you eat the game animals you obtain? I know that the meat doesn’t get wasted and it goes to someone according to the research I did. I’m not sure if it’s a common practice for the hunter to eat the animals that were harvested.

You most certainly can! I enjoyed Zebra schnitzel (from my Zebra) on my latest trip.

Yes it's very common for the lodges to cook wild game. We had something from most every animal that was hunted and it was all excellent.
Just cannot import game meat from Africa back into the US....

There are several restaurants that serve wild game in Windhoek, and most safari lodges will cook and serve the prime cuts of the game you shoot throughout your safari.

Namibia is a great country to hunt and offers some great opportunities at some very sought after Plainsgame species in their endemic environments. I’ve personally only ever hunted Namibia once, but it’s on the list of places to hunt again, especially the Caprivi.

I’ve hunted Namibia twice. In 2016 I hunted plains game outside Gobabis, and fished the Zambezi River from a camp a few miles outside of Katima Mulilo. Just this last year, I hunted hippo, croc, and buffalo, from a camp on the Chobe after flying into Katima again.

Pluses for Namibia are:

Comparatively easy firearm import
A well run country by African standards
The ability to avoid Johannesburg
Large concessions that are free range for all practical purposes

I have there twice and on the border in Botswana. Great destination! Can hunt dangerous game there and a host of plains game. Outstanding for kudu, zebra, wildebeest, oryx, steenbok and hartebeest.

Namibia would be a very good option for your first safari. There are many very good outfitters in Namibia. my wife and I hunted both DG and PG in 2021 and are going back this year. I suggest you DM one or two of the members here that have hunted there and set up a phone call to talk about setting up a safari. Also reach out to several of the outfitters here on AH and see what they offer.

As much as I would like to set up a safari, I can’t do that as of right now, things are busy we’re I’m at. Maybe one day in the not so distant future.

I you forget the idea, you will never go. So keep the idea alive, and the window of opportunity will appear.

For me it was childhood dream, then much later the realization it is possible, then it took about 3 years from decision to go, to make it happen. At age 45.
So, far I made 4 safaris.

You will, depending where you will go.
Plenty of sable in South Africa and Namibia.

Johannesburg (Oliver Tambo Airport) is notorious for loosing your luggage when in transit..been there done that on several occations..

You must also be very careful having all needed firearms documents if you enter South Africa..

There isn’t anything wrong with flying through Johannesburg. I prefer the route. The hotels to overnight are very nice and the gun permit is very easy. Johannesburg is generally the most direct route and gets you on African time zone the quickest. The stories of stolen or lost items I find exaggerated. Every route has its pros and cons depending what you are looking for.

I was in the same area, last year. Hunted buffalo on the banks of Chobe. Salambala conservancy.
Just out of curiosity, have we been to same place?

How did you fly to Katima Mulilo? International flight, or charter flight from Windhoek?

Is it possible to combine a plains game hunt with some bird hunting in between? Is plains game what they call there animals that aren’t dangerous? Kind of like how we have deer in the US.

Namibia also has some awesome shark fishing on the coast that is an awesome side trip added to a PG hunt
