19 year old shoots wolf in self defense!

This is an hour or so north of me. People go unarmed in the woods up here, even in wolf hot spots. I just don't get it. It probably won't happen, but what if it does?

Wolves are there and are predators. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, BOTH peninsulas have acknowledged populations.
I always carry at least a 22 revolver when out in the more desolate parts of Michigan.
Some folks may say that a gun isn't necessary.

For the last 50+ years, if I am out in the woods I have some sort of firearm.

No so much for the 4 legged animals but the 2 legged ones. Every time that I have come upon the 4 legged ones they have left the area but as has been said, it's better to have it than to need it and not have it.

You know how to tell the difference between a wolf and a coyote? A wolf has a radio collar and a coyote doesn’t. Even the 100+ pound coyotes don’t have collars.

I’ve been helping my brother-in-law with bear bait in northern Minnesota over the last several weeks and the trail cameras show a pack of five wolves coming into the bait regularly. Its no farther than ~1000 yards from the nearest home. Its isnt something that we experienced last year or the year before. We had a very mild winter last year in Minnesota along with a very wet spring and I suspect that is contributed to an increase in the population this year.

That's very interesting. We have a ton of wolves here in WY, but they're not something I usually consider as a threat when I'm in the woods. That said, I always have at least a 9mm, and usually a .44, with me - mostly for 2 legged predators, plus cats and bears.

As an aside, that news site really needs to hire someone who knows how to proofread. The lack of punctuation in that article made my eye twitch.

Heck, I carry a handgun on our place here in Texas. It has dispatched several rattlesnakes and one likely rabid coyote over the years. We are also getting vastly more human traffic than just a few years ago.

Two winters ago we had an injured wolf hanging around just a mile up the road. I saw him carry off a deer carcass one night. I've had wolves in my yard during the winter when everything freezes over as their mobility is greatly increased. All around here hunting dogs and dogs in their yards have been attacked or killed. I don't walk my dog on the road without carrying, let alone in the woods.

I’ve got to agree. A Glock 20 with hard cast bullets packs a hell of a punch. I know that I can happily shoot my Glock 17 or 19 a lot and comfortably, but 20-25 shots with my 20 is about all I care for in one range session. The 100MM cartridge is potent.

My personal preference backwoods load is Buffalo bores 45 ACP +p 250 grain super hard cast. Perfect 8 shot medicine from a hk 45c.
