No more wood removed for boxlock and then more wood removed for side plates .

    New Double Rifle Build

Regarding photo of 2 rifles is the upper one a sidelock or side plates ? A sidelock would be amazing - a sideplated heavy rifle no way . Too much wood removed . I do like VC double rifles . Even better the Australian distributor lives just up the road !

    New Double Rifle Build

I really like this rifle . Splinter fore end very traditional . Wood grain is straight through the pistol grip so a strong stock for a very big rifle .

What's up with todays' gun shops?

i That wooden gun case for your Citori is magnificent . A real testament to your skills. The Rigby Americase of mine is lined with a material like felt . The “Big Game” leather case is not made by Rigby but sold by the Rigby distributor for 10% of what Rigby want for their own case . It is not...

What's up with todays' gun shops?

Daniel - here are some pics . The Australian Rigby distributor now sadly passed and his son were/ are very friendly with me and have given me some special treatment as a good customer over the years . They import a range of rifle cases under the Big Game brand. These are actually very good and...

What's up with todays' gun shops?

I must be one out in this discussion about gun shops . I live about 4 miles from the Australian distributor for Rigby & Purdey . Was in there the other day to pick up a beautiful leather rifle case for my Rigby . He always has interesting classic rifles both new and old . A little further up the...

What do you think of the new Rigby Shikari?

Yes HH my experience is the same . I have seen and shot quite a few British boxlock rifles and all were PHVs or screw grips . All were great . Re the Rigby 500 NE it is still some way off . At this stage I haven’t thought about a brand of ammo . My other 500 was regulated using Federal . I...

What do you think of the new Rigby Shikari?

Most British rifle makers building box lock rifles up to WW2 used this fabulous action . Looking forward to my Rigby Shikari 500NE .

What do you think of the new Rigby Shikari?

This was and remains the business model of all the great gun and rifle makers in London as well as Birmingham. I see no difference in how high end cars are made - x makes the engine , y the gearbox , x the electrical systems . All supplied to and assembled by the brand name selling the car .

    2024 Double Rifle MSRP's?

No they will likely be the same price as actions / barrels very similar size. When you move up to 577 and 600 they are much bigger and consequently more expensive .

For those who want to try Penis Stew here is the book and recipe . On a serious note the “Two Fat Ladies “ put out quite a few cook books - all with fantastic English game recipes .

    Best balls

I’ve eaten lamb testicles as a kid on our sheep & cattle properties . Not a fan . Crumbed lamb’s brains . Not a fan . Stuffed heart . Again not a fan . But I love tripe , kidneys ,liver and tongue. I have a great English cook book put out by the “Two Fat Ladies” who had a TV show in the 1990s ...

The Draw of the Sporting Double Rifle

Yes I made the same mistake when Jerome and Marc came to Brisbane last year . 12 months into a 3 year wait and already planning a trip to London next year to drop in at Rigby . Getting very excited .

The Draw of the Sporting Double Rifle

No A hammer big bore with a Jones underlever . It doesn’t get more double rifle than that . Most of the big British doubles are ex India rather than Africa . Do you know which Indian prince was the original owner ?

The Draw of the Sporting Double Rifle

I have become a huge fan of double rifles . Yes they are complicated and need careful regulation but once sorted out they are marvelous weapons . Over the years I have accumulated a WR 450/400 side lock , an H&H Royal in 375 Flanged Magnum and a delightful Purdey 303. I also commissioned a 500NE...

Westley Richards | An Old Favourite In A New Rifle: 450 3 1/4" Nitro Express

I think I got the best outcome - a Westley Richards 450/400 3 inch . Much easier to get brass than 3.25 inch case . Two triggers with two side-locks and two barrels ie two rifles in one . Instant gratification in that it is little used second hand with unbelievably good provenance - tiger...

Third Bite/Greener Crossbolt On Double Rifles. (Or Lack Thereof)

Not sure it does . Diggory Hadoke is referring to shotguns which operate at much lower pressures than dangerous game rifles . I do think third fasteners are mandatory on big rifles . But not sure Greener cross bolts are better than other systems .

    Custom shooting sticks

The sticks look great. Any timber being turned into dowels is pretty low grade irrespective of what it is called . Huon Pine is a glorious honey coloured timber with high oil content ( like teak ) . Light but strong . I’m now inspired to go to the hardware and pick up some pine dowels . Mine...

Third Bite/Greener Crossbolt On Double Rifles. (Or Lack Thereof)

I understand the importance of third fasteners . Got all sorts of variations on double rifles - hidden 3rd fasteners of H&H and Purdey DRs , a Greener cross bolt on a WR sidelock and a rising bite on a 500NE . Al interesting and doing the same thing . But the traditional Greener cross bolt is...

W.J.JEFFERY & CO. Hand Crafted Big Game Rifles

That is a spectacular rifle . I am a big fan of WR rifles - got 4 and all really well built . I own and regularly shoot a 505 Gibbs rifle . 9.5 pounds is very light . It really should way at least 10.5 pounds .

    2024 Double Rifle MSRP's?

I got a price for a new Purdey double rifle in 2020. The price was A$400,000 before any extras ( eg non house style engraving ). All taxes paid . The price of a new Bentley Continental ! I bought a second hand H&H Royal , Purdey and WR double for a fraction of this price.

    Ronald Wharton 300 H&H

I purchased this rifle at auction in March last year and have finally got it into Australia and taken possession . It is a 300 H&H magnum . It was made by the late Ronald Wharton in his shop located at 100 St Martin’s Lane London in 1989. Action is an original Mauser with 26 inch barrel. There...

    Westley Richards Martini

Great maker and a great calibre . WR used Metford rifling in their rifles during late 19th and up to WW1 . Many people looking at these rifles think the barrels have been shot out - but generally they haven’t been . I expect this rifle will prefer the 215 grain bullets at about 2050 - 2100 fps ...

One final rodeo, bolt-action or double rifle for my last big bore thumper?

I shoot a 505G and 500NE double . Basically the same effect on game . 500J also likely the same . Norma did load for 505G with their PH range of ammo. The 500 NE is a very good fallback option .

    Any boxing fans?

Was a fan of boxing for years and still interested in the truly serious bouts . What really pisses me off is these retired football thugs who confuse throwing a few haymakers with boxing but are paid huge sums on pay for view . A properly trained ( and supremely fit ) boxer would cut them to...

Welcome To The Wonderful World Of BSA
