Client killed Kafue National Park, Zambia

I was in that same area this past summer and I can say there were a lot of elephants and they were really amped up. They are being crowded and pushed by human encroachment. We experienced several charges by elephants over 100 yds away. It is very easy to be critical of another's actions -...

TANZANIA: Experience With Pano Hunting Safaris?

I hunted Tanzania in 2018 with Harprret Brar, in Maasailand - Lolkisale and Lobo. He's still there and I believe he's had those camps for some time. That was where I met Pano. The hunt was fantastic. In 2019 I took my wife on a photo safari; Harpreet's photo lodges are spectacular.

    Hotchkiss Rifle

Red Leg, Right you are - I may not have the knowledge you guys posses, but I do know a cannon when I see one. Although, I did find a big ram-rod in an out building - perhaps I should keep looking.

    Hotchkiss Rifle

I didn't take a real good look - the room with the safe is lot well lit. The first number was 32, I'm pretty sure the second was 40 - but I won't swear to it. It's octagon barrel, looks like ivory front sight. I'll get it out into the light and take some pictures. I remember when my dad got...

    Hotchkiss Rifle

Yes - it may take me a week or so before I'm back to where the safe is located. There's an old Marlin 32-40 as well.

    Hotchkiss Rifle

I've noticed some of you referencing 45-70 caliber ammo and rifles. I was going through one of my dad's old gun safes and decided to see what was in the back row. There were some old Springfields, a couple Sharps, and a Winchester-Hotchkiss; I figure some of you might know something about this...

Trophy Room Build after 45 years of hunting

Thanks John, How did you decide on dimensions and layout? Are you planning based on specific trophies or just arrange them once it's built?

How Much do You Shoot Your Big Bore?

Just bought a place in Texas, moving in a couple months. I would love to go on a pig hunt with my double rifle. I have a few other "cool" rifles we could discuss in private.

How Much do You Shoot Your Big Bore?

If you have a history of detached retinas, you need to be extremely cautious of heavy recoil. Saving recoil for a hunt isn't the same as putting money in the bank - it only takes one to do damage. My cousin, a very accomplished eye surgeon, is currently in Africa teaching surgical techniques...

Trophy Room Build after 45 years of hunting

Any point in a 'small' double rifle?

As you can see, your question has opened up several talking points with corresponding opinions. 1. The classic double vs single 2. First time safari with a double 3. Caliber Allow me to use your own words, and I'll throw in a few of mine. 1. "My first hunting trip to Africa wouldn't feel...

Comment by 'Franco' in media 'Martin and Osa Johnson, Adventurers'

The aircraft in this photo is "Osa's Ark" a Sikorsky S-38, the companion aircraft "Spirit of Africa" was a Sikorsky S-39 painted in a giraffe scheme. Herbert Fisk Johnson also had an S-38, "Spirit of Carnauba" which he flew to South America in search of carnauba palms. Replicas of both Johnson...

    Traveling with a Double

And they will. I had one sound the alarm because a swab test of the case showed positive for gun powder. Last time coming home through SFO I was surrounded by agents at the checkpoint because the new guy thought I was in possession of a stolen rifle. The serial number was on the "Hot Sheet"...

One gun or two? On safari

My shortest safari was 1 month, my longest almost 3. If I'm going to spend 3 days getting somewhere and the same getting home - I'm going to stay there and not feel rushed or pressed for time. I extend my hunts, add additional hunts, add a fishing trip - anything. I do not worry about...

    Traveling with a Double

It really isn't that tough, and takes very little time. My last trip through Zambia, the longest part of the firearms inspection was the Supervisor posing for pictures with my rifles.

    Traveling with a Double

I pack all my rifles the same way: The rifle is in a Murray Leather Top Zipper case, inside a Tuffpak. My double stays assembled. When I need to show the serial number I just break it open - or if I have to, take the fore stock off.

    300 PRC

I have a Hill Country 300 PRC with a Zero Compromise scope, and it is awesome to shoot; although I have never used it hunting. At the range, I reconfirm zero at 100 yds, take 1 or 2 at 1000 yds for wind, and go to 1500 yds. If the range is open, I work my way out to 2000 yds. If the winds are...

thats why I dont like doubles (have one)

Well done. It is tests such as those which instill the confidence to venture forth into the wilds. Several years ago a friend and I were quail hunting at our club. It just happened to be a gunmaker demo weekend, and Purdy was there to show off their wares and hopefully sell a shotgun or two...

    450/400 3” DGX performance

Kevin, I will tell you this - That safari in 2018 was first. I had a Heym 450/400 double, a Heym 375 H&H, and a 300 Wthrby Mag. I used Hornady ammo in all 3. I shot over 30 animals in 18 days, including 4 cape buffalo - with no wounded and no losses. The majority dropped where they stood...

thats why I dont like doubles (have one)

I understand - thanks. Please do take not offense, I appreciate your taking the time to educate me. However, when it comes to firearms, tools, cigars, booze, and cars - I have made it a practice to find very little in the way of crossover functionality, much in the manner my wife ascribes to...

    450/400 3” DGX performance

Man, I sure thought so. He dropped straight in his tracks, but we could tell he wasn't dead because blood started spurting out of the entry wound - like a hose, every time his heart beat. I advanced to his rear as the PH advanced to ward off some other buffalo; and the wounded buffalo got to...

thats why I dont like doubles (have one)

Thanks, and thanks for the info regarding a scope. Yes, I have learned you can remove a scope - but that assumes you have time. Are you saying, "Today, I'd like to use my rifle open sights as opposed to the scope" - so you remove it in camp, or are you suggesting you wound a cape buffalo and...

thats why I dont like doubles (have one)

The first was one of two bulls feeding in heavy vegetation on an "island" in the Caprivi. This was a Community animal and we had been made aware of their presence by the locals. They took us to the island in a couple makoros (native term for piece of wood that barely floats) and led us right...

    450/400 3” DGX performance

Kevin, Here's a cape buffalo I got on my safari in 2018. The round pictured was fired from Heym 450/400 from about 35 yds. Hit the right shoulder passing through to the left shoulder, breaking both. The bullet was recovered in the skin of the left shoulder.

thats why I dont like doubles (have one)

Since recovering from shoulder surgery has left me few options, I figure I would pose a question regarding what I think is missing from this discussion. I could be wrong - and readily accept that possibility. The discussion is about doubles, and there seems to be a strong argument for the use...

    Trophy Room Question

Is that a gun vault or are they open to the trophy room? I opted for a 1/2 body mount on my rhino, with the intent to place it in a corner. There's still time to decide left or right pose. Here's my giraffe and one of my hippos. The giraffe was processed as a rug, but seeing yours perhaps I...

    1 shot kills

By saying "one shot kills" do you mean 1 shot and the animal drops to the ground - dead, or do you mean, 1 shot and it runs a bit and drops? I think we've all experienced both; and if you adhere to the practice of keep shooting until whatever you're shooting at is dead - you're going to see...

Yes, the plan is for all walls to be sheeted with 3/4 ply, raised panel wainscoting, with sheetrock on the upper walls and ceiling.
