Be aware some jurisdictions may not allow FMJ, or in some cases, solids.
However, had great success loading CEB solids for 6.5 and 300. Very accurate, deadly on the tiny antelope. Very close poi to softs.
No, max light would be at the lowest setting (50mm ÷ 3.5x = 14mm exit pupil - more than your pupil can use). Anything above 7x is making the scope exit pupil smaller than your eye's pupil.
Try it in a controlled darkness situation like a dimly lit trophy room.
Man, I can't believe you opened the door for this group to come up with nicknames. Surely you have read how sick their postings can be?
I guess it would get pretty boring, riding motorcycles counter-clockwise on a hill,,,,
Best wishes!
Best answer here is likely "it depends".
The PH knows the situation. He/she has experience and training to make the best plan.
Hopefully the hunter did some homework before choosing the PH.
Different game, different terrain, different trackers, different clients...
Let the PH decide.
Human eye pupil size approx 7mm in the dark.
Riflescope exit pupil is basically objective lens÷magnification. (50mm objective @ 7x = ~7mm exit pupil.. 40mm@6×= ~6.6mm) any higher magnification reduces light transmission to your pupil)
Summary = no reason to have more than ~6x or 7x...
Hey Masai,
Wise man, gaining info before you go. Some good insights have already been mentioned. No doubt today's quality softs are great bullets for your quarry, but some thinking to consider:
1) you are hunting dangerous game,
2) things can go bad,
3) PH's get hurt/killed,
4) no help is on...
Federal 215 (or match)
Rem LRM
WW LRM
CCI magnum
Not a fan of using LR in a magnum (70+ grains of powder)
When you find them, buy enough. Don't let a few cents apiece stop you. When you find a deal - let us know!
Last week I found some RemLRM at the LGS for $100/1,000.
Meanwhile, on the Western front:
Can anyone explain how much $34 trillion is? Are there possible scenarios to control this other than "new monetary policy of print more money"?
As Habib said recently "sure, you can shoot the elephant with a bonded bullet, AFTER you know he is dead!"
His skull is pretty thick. I'd use good solids.
300 PRC would hammer plains game. Make sure your bullet is Africa appropriate. Ammo would have to travel with you. Buying 300PRC in Africa would be unlikely.
Lost ammo can happen (only a few times, so far) but so can lots of other things! It's only a problem, if it's a problem...
Always use them when sighting in any magnum/heavy rifle. (Recommend doing everything possible to keep your brain from saying "this is gonna hurt" when in the field.) Never use them in the field.
