    Barnes TSX review

When one is a wildlife professional, you do what you have to do. No shame in that. The experience of Professionals Hunters (we have them in American but, here, they usually work for the government) should always be taken with the utmost respect. IME - the TSX doesn't expand much and would...

    For the tractor lovers

I cut my teeth on my dad's old 8N Ford. My brother and I nearly cried when he sold it. He sold it and bought a Kubota (Can't recall the model number), but I know that it is difficult to find parts to fit. (needs a drive shaft to the front axel). I bush-hogged with it for two hours today...

Scope for custom Ruger No1 9.3x74r

What's up with todays' gun shops?

I don't go to many gun shows either anymore, BUT, folks of our "ilk" can find a few gems, because the "spray and pray" crowd makes up most of the attendees. I bought a CZ 550 Safari Classics in .375 H&H for $800 at the last one I attended! Sometimes they almost give away big bore ammo. I've...

What's up with todays' gun shops?

I think Leupold is missing a big niche by no longer making a glossy black scope. If they would just offer a VX-3HD (or VX-5HD) in something like a 3.5-10 x 40 (no batteries required) in gloss black, they would own the market for scopes on shiny rifles like the Remington 700 BDL or Weatherby...

What's up with todays' gun shops?

It's the same here in Georgia. The good thing is that my favorite gun store doesn't give much for nice bolt actions and they sell them cheap! I will not be sharing... Got a CZ 550 Safari Classics in .458 Win Mag on Monday for $1,000! I didn't buy a Sako 85 in 7mm Rem with a Leupold VX III...

    Thoughts about Leupold VX-3HD

90% of my scopes are Leupolds, but, if you have to re-zero a scope, then something needs to be repaired or replaced. IMO - scopes have 2 functions: 1. Provide a magnified, clear image of target and reticle 2. Hold zero If they can't do both, then something needs to be changed.

    Good African Safari Shirt?

I thought it was wrong too, but I stand corrected... I bought a lifetime supply of Cabela's Safari shirts & a jacket several years ago. If I'm still hunting Africa 20 years from now (beyond my allotted 3 score and 10) , I will probably go with 5.11's. I wear 5.11's shirts and pants almost...

    Method Of Payment

I have set up a "free checking account" just for doing transfers. I keep a $100 minimum balance in it, and put more money into it a day or two before for paying. I take money transferred to me out very quickly. If the account gets "hacked", I can only loose $100.

I would avoid Amsterdam, if at all, possible. I have a friend who had to spend five days there, because of firearms issues. If your traveling to and from Africa from the USA, spend an extra $200 or so and use Travel Express or Gracy Travel to purchase your tickets. It can make your life...

Ammo cannot be packed inside luggage?

The imbeciles that work for TSA, usually don't have a clue. He made me wait an hour to x-ray the gun case in order to verify that there...

Ammo cannot be packed inside luggage?

I've always packed my ammo in my checked baggage (in a cheap metal "money box" without issue). I always fly out of Atlanta. I have had to unpack it in JNB and declare it as a separate piece of luggage when leaving JNB for another country.

    Cape Buffalo Mount Question

I think it is the same buffalo. I had no idea of the condition of trophies shipped from Africa to the US, until my buffalo arrived in December of 2023. The horns were are just "floating" around on the skull and the skin was horrible. Good US taxidermists do a wonderful job considering what...

Solid bullets for Buffalo? Yes or No?

Solids have their place, but IMO, if you only want one bullet, use a well-constructed expanding bullet. A solid will, usually, completely penetrate a buffalo and come out the other side, risking injuring another buffalo.

When hunting species like zebra or gemsbuck does the sex of the animal matter to hunters?

In Africa, I only want to shoot males, since you can't take meat home. This zebra was male, but had no test-ta-clease... My hunting buddy poked fun at me saying that his castrated mine! I would hunt females, but would expect a significant trophy fee reduction.

I prefer a brimmed hat like I was wearing here: If you don't care if your PH considers you a "dude", get one with a zebra band! In full sun, my ears and face will get blistered in a baseball cap if I don't use sunscreen, but I always bring one...

I'm fortunate enough to live in a rural area, with no restrictions regarding shooting firearms on private property. I shoot .22 bolt actions all the time. Mainly just for fun, but it also makes for great practice. I've got a swinging steel target in my backyard, that probably takes at...
