    Best bullet for Africa

It’s a perfect choice for werewolf, chupacabra and perhaps aardwolf.

    Best bullet for Africa

I don’t recommend saving money on the terminal projectile. Two of those boxes may be best to display in a “man cave”. The partition would work well for most plains game, but there are far better choices for buffalo. Perhaps the solids could work well for the tiny ten - that’s a whole other...

Tanzania handling firearms: Park lodges and Hunting safari

I’ve done it twice - ie booked national park tours at the back end of a hunting safari in Tanzania. Share with your PH/operator what you are trying to do. I understand they are required to have safes, and have been able to store the rifles etc. You do have to swing back by on your way out etc.

    Exclusively hunting with Winchester cartridges?

This has been pretty well covered here in other posts. Decades of field experience has shown that a sectional density of 3. and a muzzle velocity of 2150 or better is reliably effective. The 405 is a great cartridge, that comes up short in sectional density with its most common 300 grain...

    Factory .416 Taylor Rifles

I like the 416 Rigby, but that is mostly for nostalgia reasons. I believe the 416 Remington is the same length as the 375 H&H and Lott. Perhaps the 416 Taylor is another way to solve the “too much bore for case” perception with the 458 Win Mag, vs extending to the length of the Lott. Frankly...

Ideal distance for a Cape Buffalo first shot..

I agree with gillettehunter and rare breed - I’d say 30-50 yards is ideal. If its in a group, I may not want to be closer than 30 yards, depending on the situation.

    Plains Game with iron sights?

I’ve hunted nyala, bushbuck and buffalo with iron sights. The nyala and bushbuck were with a 318 DR and the buffalo with a 425 bolt gun. I don’t really know the distance on any, but they were all under 100 yards and the nyala was quite close. I also used the 318 DR on a bushpig over hounds...

    Possibly dumb sling question

I prefer the Trader Keiths as well. The leather slings with the leather thong ends that are tied instead of metal buckles also look right at place on a rifle for Africa.

Average Shot Range in East Cape SA

“230ish”? Are you a soul so brave as to only take shots so far as you can well estimate with the naked eye? Well done. My taste in vintage rifles may be just a little bit different, but I have a soft spot for the lever guns. Hopefully I can take my 1895 on a future trip.

    No. 1 Rebirth by R J Renner

Well done. I’m not sure which is more stunning, the quality of the work or how quickly it was accomplished. Both exceptional.

Understanding The Phenomenon Of Jacket-Core Separation

I had a jacket-core separation in a little more modern context. Let me explain… I was bringing a pre-war 275 Rigby to RSA circa 2019. I felt obligated to bring “275 Rigby“ brass vs “7x57” brass so as to avoid potential hassles at entry. Moreover, I choose to use the factory Hornady 275 Rigby...

    How did I do? 375 & 416

You did very well. The RSM has been under appreciated for years, and resale values are recently rising. They remain a lot of gun for the money. They are one of a few actions that a 416 Rigby really works right in, and I think one of the best cartridges for the RSM (the 375 in RSM is just a...

Average Shot Range in East Cape SA

I’m a little surprised to learn how many shots members here take beyond 300 yards, presumably with the help of a laser range finder (4xx yards measured to the yard). I’ve never hunted in Africa with a laser range finder, or with a PH that used one. Goes to show its one big continent with many...
