Photographs show antelope in South Africa with bizarre growth sprouting from his head.
  • A kudu photographed in South Africa has been found with a bizarre but benign growth sprouting from its horn
  • The owner of the private game farm said the kudu broke it horn, and the large lump has been growing ever since
  • Its strange deformation affects its hearing but causes no other problems because it does not impede its grazing

These photographs show a kudu with a bizarre growth sprouting from his head - caused by the fracture of his horn which has failed to regrow correctly.

Years ago, the outer part of the horn came off and was left with only the bone. Not long after, the owner noticed a growth forming - and it has been growing ever since.

It was captured by company manager and keen photographer Abraham De Villiers, 52, at Mowana Private Game Farm in Limpopo, South Africa.

Mr De Villiers was told by the owner the growth doesn't cause any discomfort for the kudu as, while it might affect his hearing, it does not affect his grazing.

If he sees the kudu in any discomfort, he will have it removed.

Mr De Villiers said: 'I was extremely excited as I have never seen a kudu bull with such an unusual horn. I actually know the owner and he said that while it may influence his hearing, it doesn't affect his grazing and he is happy and eating well. I highly doubt I'll ever see anything like this again.'

I wonder if it is fairly solid, or hollow?

Looks like a gourd on his head.

Thanks for sharing .
He is very different for sure. Forrest

I hope they dart the beast and cut it off.

Wow, thanks for sharing

hope they leave it alone to enjoy its free pass status.

Never seen anything like it.

I have seen this before- on a Gemsbok bull. We darted the animal and cut the horn off just below the growth, oubout 2 inches above the scull. The growth weighed about 8 or 9 kilograms and twisted the animals head to the degree that he could hardly feed or drink. He was real skinny when we found him.
The exterior of the growth was rather leatherly and not solid as expected. When cut open, the growth tissue was very similar to fat. White in colour, no smell to it, not puss any very little blood.
The Gemsbuck made a full recovery and the growth never grew back.

Regards.

Cull the kudu!

I wonder if it is genetics or from injury..... (like whitetail)

I bet he doesn't fight very well anymore

This is a photo of an Angus bull that came into a slaughter plant where I was an inspector. This growth wasn't hard either. Have no idea what caused it.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
