    Medical issues, postponed August hunt

Thank you everyone for your encouragement!! Much appreciated. First visit with specialist/surgeon is next Tuesday. Still waiting to hear from the cancer specialist. Flying into Anchorage tonight for a week. Weather out here in PWS has not been very friendly to flying.

    Medical issues, postponed August hunt

The doctor didn’t give me good news. So I need a surgery and possible chemo. Cruiser Bob gladly moved my hunt to June of 2025. So the hunt is still on just need to wait a little longer.

Most of Alaska is now 2-5 black bear, 10 wolves, 1-2 brown bear.

    45-70 for dangerous game?

Right, and black bears are even worse. Its funny in a sick way, hunters will spend big money to hunt deer, moose and caribou. But when it comes time to thin out the predator population most won't even consider it.

    45-70 for dangerous game?

Very good. I just had a muzzle break added. It likes the 300 grain .458 socom ttsx. Just over 1 inch at 100 yards. I am trying to get the group under 1 inch. It will be a few months before I can get back to the ranger. We just got hammered with another 3 ft of snow . Hopefully by mid April I...

    45-70 for dangerous game?

I just got my 45/70 bolt action rifle back from the gunsmith today. Now I can get back to tightening up my 300 ttsx group. It was at 1 1/2 inch at 100 yds. If I can get it at one inch or less its going on the plane to SA. No Cape Buffalo on this trip. just Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Gemsbok...

    45-70 for dangerous game?

Ok. Now that we killed the 45/70 debate. What about a .458 American 2? Lots more pressure than 45/70.

    30/06 165 grain

I believe they stopped making them because of the move to get away from lead. I also have boxes of them. My 30/06 loves them.

    45-70 for dangerous game?

Well, I have two 45/70’s. One custom bolt action and the newest one a CVA Scout (blued version) that I will pick up in a couple of weeks. One of those will be going with me in August to Limpopo. It’s interesting to watch the YouTube shows from SA outfitters. I actually watched one yesterday...

    45/70

What country did you get your Buffalo in. I would like to use my bolt 45/70 for a Buffalo. I don't think I can in SA.
  28. 1:66 twiste@d

    45/70

I think the Cape Buffalo has a lot more will to survive than our bison. And more tonnage. And just plain bad attitude!

    45/70

I am hoping to have a 404 Jeffery for my Cape Buffalo hunt. Thats in a couple years.

    45/70

I have two 45/70, a single shot 25 inch barrel and a mauser bolt with a 20 inch barrel. I am using a pure copper 300 grain barnes ttsx bullet and pushing it at 2500 fps.

    45/70

I shot a deer with a 45/70 once and told my self never again. Total destruction of the front shoulders. I kinda figured that I will be hunting Zebra, Gemsbok and Blue Wildebeest the combination of bullet type , weight and velocity it should do fine as long as I do my part.

    45/70

Looking at taking a long one of my 45/70 to SA. 300 grain Barnes ttsx. I am going for plains game in the Limpopo. Bushveld country. The owner says ave 80 to 125 yards, and occasionally 175 yards. Any thoughts?

    Rimmed (only) Cartridges

So you can use the 9.3x74r for Cape Buffalo.? I was told that the cartridge had to be 375 H&H and up. At least for South Africa.
  34. 1:66 twiste@d

    Rimmed (only) Cartridges

Does the 9.3x74r equal the 375 H&H? Forgive me for being uneducated .

    Rimmed (only) Cartridges

Anyone ever considered 43 Spanish in a Remington Rolling block?

    30/06 165 grain

I have a list of the different styles of shooting sticks their PH’s use. I use a set I made, it’s a bi pod. They mostly use tri pod. As far as practice with my 06, I bought 4 boxes of 165 grain interlocks to reload for this winter. Then to reload my hunting loads with either CX or TTSX in mid...

That’s good to know. I will look at them on my Cape Buffalo hunt in 2026. I read about a travel agent in I think maybe Wisconsin, but they never returned any of my calls. So I used my trusted travel agent, who does my other travels. I know this trip is insured heavy!

I am thinking about taking my 30/06 , it really loves the 165 grain bullets. Is that to light for Zebra, Blue WB, Gemsbok?
