I "did the Google" on him. What I found is that he got "the Chinese flu" bad about a year ago and that he is months behind.
Thanks for thinking about it though.
According to what I've been told it will be about a year to complete. Clock starts now with the blank sent to George at Treebone Carving for rough shaping. George said it will be anywhere from one to three months depending on what has been previously contracted. I need this completed for a...
I got an email back from the stock maker, he confirmed what a few of you have said about the grain in the wrist area as laid out on the blank. He apparently works closely with the people that do the rough shaping to ensure that the blank is setup properly "before any sawdust is made". Thanks to...
I'm really scratching my head over this. If you look at Nevada Mikes Ruger No 1 it hast straight grain through the wrist, so does my RSM. I'd always heard that a straight grain in this area was preferable, maybe I'm wrong.
I'm going to hypothesize a bit. The tang of the Ruger No 1 is is quit a...
I'll think about it. I do need to ensure the the little bit of heartwood does not become part of the stock. It doesn't look like a problem from the images but ....
Nice. The shadow-line treatment will be on my new stock; you don't see that often. I'd like to see the rest of it if you have the...
Yes, a couple of times. I have another Ruger No 1 in .300WM. I bought the as a barreled action and had it stocked with a very nice hunk of Batstone Walnut. That rifle has a rollover cheek rest, palm swell and a beavertail forend; it's almost too pretty to hunt but hunt it does.
I also...
I'm planning on returning to Tanzania in October 2026 for another buffalo hunt and have decided to restock my trusty .500 Sharps for that hunt. This is a bit crazy because the wood that the rifle is currently wearing is actually very nice but I just am wanting something a bit different.
I...
How about a RSM chambered in a 505 Gibbs or 500 Jeffery (although the Jeffery doesn't require the RSM's magnum length receiver), with one caveat, one piece bottom metal.
The nice thing about the Ruger No 1 is that it can be chambered in about anything (and has), Adding this or that caliber to a...
1. Qd rings or no on DG rifle?
Yup, have 'em
2. If yes, which ones do you all like?
Alaska Arms
3. How often are you really removing your scope? I assume it would be on tracking and follow-up shots post the first shot?
Never, I prefer iron sights.
I enjoyed your report very much, you very clearly took some time to ensure that the reader could enter the hunt that you experienced. I also liked that you placed the focus on the hunt not the end result because it is the hunt, the adventure, that is really important. I believe that unvarnished...
The concern that I hear for the Selous is two fold. First the hydro-eclectic dam on the Rufiji river that is flooding large portions of the Selous Game Reserve. This is a major encroachment to the reserve and from what I hear an environmental disaster.
Secondly, 2/3 of what was once the largest...
Ok, if I have questions I'll DM but I think it a shame that you prefer not to share your safari. Like you I love the area, definitely not for the casual hunter.
I have no idea if the Ruger ramp accepts a NEGC sight blade if it does great, I used the white line Sourdough style because they are adjustable with a file instead of a fixed hight; plus I just like the looks.
Followups are just a matter of technique. A lot of people do followup shots with a bolt action without taking the rifle off their shoulder. I have never had much luck doing that especially with a scope.
My preferred method is to dismount the rifle, work the bolt and snap it back to my shoulder...
I have a 2006 RSM and before I took possession of it i was all set to replace the trigger but when I got the rifle the trigger was quite nice. On further examination it became obvious that someone had worked on it so I just kept it. BTW. I was planning on Timney.
I did do some research and the...
I haven't taken anything specific to pass out as gifts. I think that there's something to spontaneity. On two occasions I have given my Els Somerset cartridge pouch at the end of my hunt; one in 2022 to my PH for his double rifle and one in 2024 to my friend and PH AK Ifny for his 458WM (Photo)...
I'm glad that you brought this up as this attitude shows up on these pages way too frequently. We see titles like 'Going to SA, how many animals can I kill in 7 days'. We constantly see posts about extending the range of this or that caliber, killing beasts with calibers that are inappropriate...
I didn't see such an animal on the Barnes website; I see a 270gr TTSX ,375 but not 300gr. These things are monstrously long. It's basically a TSX with a pretty blue tip added. Probably just great for those Kudu sized critters at long distances.
OK, been watching this thread thinking no way was I going to jump in yet here I am.
What I'll say will be in my hunt report if I ever finish the thing. About a year and a half ago I bought a Ruger RSM in 375 H&H for a 2024 buffalo hunt; didn't even want the thing, didn't trust a medium caliber...
