Well articulated article. I personally cannot relate to his dilemma, it’s the easiest decision of my life even tho Trump can be so maddening. The alternative has always been untenable to me and if this hasn’t sealed it for many of his ilk my incomprehension of this view is solidified like...
I’ll DM you so we can discuss details offline. I’d like to do a comparison myself. Because at a high level, shipping isn’t hugely different but it will be more with mounts. On the flip side, lower cost labor and the rand exchange rate make it seem likely the biggest ticket item - the taxidermy...
Great report, thanks for sharing! Always enjoy the reports, it seems more so now that I’ve finally been. It helps takes you back there in your mind.
I decided to get my taxidermy done there as I believe it’s cheaper that way all in - per a friend who’d compared in the past - but I’m in Houston...
Dude, wow!
I enjoyed meeting you at DSC and the AH events, I like the smile on your face and the gleam in your eye.
Godspeed on your recovery. You’re in my prayers. You’ve got this!
Great Buffalo and first Safari wow!!
Thanks to @PARA45 and your thread I went to the doc and got antibiotics going after a couple days fever that Dr Para diagnosed! I had 4 big red bites seemingly develop when I got back, obviously from tick bites there (Eastern Cape). Prevention is easy...
Thank you sir! It was a trip that created great memories, and now I’ll easily remember all the details because I wrote them in the report!
That is a monster old Nyala in your profile pic, where’d you get him?
Of course, PM away! I owe you for recommending G4A so highly when I asked.
I had a few moments myself getting good sight picture on long shots while trying to find the animals in the bush. Thank goodness Don’s a good whistler which helped keep the animals there
Hunting Day 5 - We decided since I was well ahead of pace we’d take a day to Grahamstown and visit Lauritson Taxidermy, the Coetzee’s butchery, Brittany’s business, and see the sites. If time – which we did have – also to Port Alfred to see the beach and marina. We did all that and had a great...
Hunting Day 4 – Only day 4, I was quite happy to know I still had 4 days of hunting left despite already creating so many great memories.
Every day in the evenings we documented the animals we saw – for today it was Red Hartebeest, Kudu, Mountain Reedbuck, Waterbuck, Sable, Springbok, Blue...
Hunting Day 3 – the pursuit of Eland would have us making the move to the northern mountain property called Kramberg Game Reserve, a 3.5 hour drive up into the mountains near AliwahNorth. They have nice Eland at Woodvale but I loved the idea of being up higher in the mountains and seeing our 3rd...
Hunting Day 2 (cont) -
We drove a bit more checking out the animals but it was going to be a hot one well into the 90s so we decided to head back to the lodge and relax over the heat of the day, I was ahead of pace. So we enjoyed the pool – it was COLD – but refreshing and had a nice lunch...
Hunting Day 2 - Next on our spiral pursuit was a Nyala on Woodvale, the home lodge and property. To get to our hunting spot to start wouldn’t take long and we were on our way after our delicious breakfast full of nourishment and high hopes for another great day.
We drove out a good ways and...
Hunting Day 1 – the goal for the trip was a spiral (mini) slam – I read the debate on AH on calling it a true spiral slam – and the target day 1 was to be Bushbuck because “they are often the hardest to get and can be a battle” so we went to their Mountain Top property which would be an hour...
On to the hunting report which is what most here want to hear!
Arrival – Don Laaks was our PH for the week and picked us up at the airport. It was clear he would be a great guy to spend a week with right away with a smile on his face and ready knowledge on the area, animals, plants, etc...
Country: South Africa, Eastern Cape

Awesome report, thanks for sharing, that was exciting!
I’m just back from hunting with G4H and working on my report now. Nothing as exciting as buff hunting but a typical first African Safari of plains game. Wik and all have a wonderful operation and beautiful properties.
As to bullet weight...
Wow! Great stories and exciting hunts! Thanks for sharing.
I’m just home from hunting with G4A and will be doing a report soon. Plains game for me and I was tempted to go for a buff cow but hadn’t planned on it and wasn’t mentally ready for that. Next time.
Great people, properties, and...
For my upcoming first Africa safari I’m taking both a 7mm RM (a Tikka circa 2000) and a 375H&H. For my 7 mag I tested many bullets and loads and the best ended up being the Swift A frame 160 gr. Which of course became almost impossible to find except for some great AH’rs saving my bacon. So...
A great AH poster came through for me with a box of bullets but challenges sighting in (scope lose) and one final test vs 168 gr AB LRs has got me down to one box and still final sighting in to do.
Anyone have any out there?
Thanks!
Exactly! It does hurt like hell but the 13-14-15 years you get of that amazing unconditional love and ever present companion is worth it!
Ellie, our current lab…our 3rd. And a great pet and huntress!
If I’d have seen this in time I could’ve sold you the two back you sold me, they’re the right lot number. I won’t need them till Africa trip #2 for Buffalo in ‘25.
Fun read, enjoy all the opinions. For my first Africa hunt to Eastern Cape for spirals I’m taking a 7 mm RM (with 160 gr Swift A Frames) as could have some long shots and of course taking the 375 H&H (loaded with 260 gr Nosler Accubonds). Likely use the 7 mag for most and the 375 for Eland...
It makes sense it’s nose heavy, same barrel with less bored out. I guess we need to try the H4350, that’s a strong endorsement. Thanks for your comments.
Thanks @hoytcanon. We’ve done some loads of RL15 and a couple with IMR4064. I’ve only shot the 4064s and they did really well. Anxious to see what the RL15 does and may try your recommendation. I’m impressed how this RSM shoots, so far it’s shot the CX factory loads well and the reloads I’ve tried.
Thank you both! Tough call on staying in the waterfront area vs out a ways like Boschendal Vineyard which looks amazing! Perhaps our only time to hit Cape Town and it seems easier to see the sites and do tours right in town.
Another question, we were planning to fly to Port E but see some have...
Bumping this thread as we’ll be hitting Cape Town in early May prior to hunting the Eastern Cape. How long (and safe) is the drive from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth? I hear some areas to avoid in Cape Town that google maps routes you through so was planning to stick with tour groups and fly to...
Good advice. I should’ve bought two boxes of the CX when I had the chance because they shoot well through it. I only bought one as I wasn’t sure how’d they’d do and didn’t know they’d be scarce when it came time. I have two boxes 300 gr Swift A’s but figure that will be my next trip Buffalo...
