Show your work horses and bubba rifles

LOL, funny you mention that; I've been looking at a swap-in ER Shaw barrel in 35 Whelen that Midway sells for Savage 110/111's for about $200 US. I think it would be a neat change and 35 Whelen would be a nice caliber addition to fill in the spot between my 308 Norma Mag and 375 H&H Mag. My...

Show your work horses and bubba rifles

I found this Savage 111 in 270 Win at a cheap price on the used rack at my local Cabelas a few weeks back. I bought it more for the glossy Leupold Vari-X IIc 3-9x scope than for the gun; but assuming this thing can shoot like a Savage is supposed to, then it is likely to become a workhorse rifle.

    Bolt jeweling at scale?

I've seen plenty of videos online of people jeweling an individual rifle bolt; setting it up in a collet indexer and jeweling it with a drill press. I am now curious how the major manufacturers such as Remington or Winchester do this at mass production volumes. Do they have the same type of...

What Calibers can Be Converted to 375H&H

A vintage Interarms Mark X or Whitworth Express is about on par with a Model 70 Safari Express, and can be had regularly for $1,000-1,500. And that's for a factory sorted big game rifle.

A cautionary tale - Traveling with ammunition in luggage

The way I look at it, buying separate sets of bags is cheap insurance against this kind of thing happening. Granted, it gets a bit more complicated with an international hunting trip, but so many of the stories arise from domestic hunting or range trips.

A cautionary tale - Traveling with ammunition in luggage

I have had a long standing personal rule to never use bags or luggage that I would ever carry on a plane for vacation as a hunting or shooting range bag, or vice-versa. Too many stories like this going back for literally decades.

Thanks for the @ mention; and to be clear, I very much consider myself an amateur at this. There are plenty of good videos on YouTube and other sites that will show you how to do this; but the basic principle is that you use a household clothes iron on top of a damp cloth, and exercise the...

Interesting find on the preowned rack at my local Cabelas store today. A Remington 798 that has been rebuilt with what appears to be a McMillan-type stock and a 26 inch E.R. Shaw barrel marked "6.5/257 Ackley". Never heard of the caliber, but based on a quick internet search, I think this is...
