DG calibers/energy laws versus rifle competency

Regs in RSA are a bit more granular than that. The national parks / reserves perhaps require the minimum equivalent of what the .375 H&H / Ruger, can deliver, but it is the discretion of the private landowners / safari operators whether the 9.3x62mm Mauser is sufficient for Buff (which is the...

    The .257 Roberts thread

If it is a LA, then you're sitting pretty with options opened up for you, especially if you handload. The LA magazine box will accommodate the longer OAL loads that use the higher BC bullets. With that action you can use both "normal" and standard +P loads, without worries regarding higher...

    Case gauge for 9.3x62mm?

Not quite. More like Wison's Chamber Length Gauge: No worries though, as I went ahead and bought Hornady's HS gauge kit. Now my 9.3mm brass actually greets me when I walk up to the reloading bench.

    The 308, 30-06, 7x57 Conundrum

For those relying on the 220 grain Core-lokts, are you using the factory ammo or pulling bullets and working up your own load? The Core-lokt is an awesome bullet when used appropriately!

    .30-06, 180gr Bullets, favorite powder?

Thru multiple 180 grain cup-core, and bonded bullets including A-Frame and Northfork I've relied on H4350. BTW, the 165-grain load looks pretty good.

    375 H&H help

Federal loads the A-Frame to an OAL of 3.570" - 3.575", which is just below the cannelure. I load mine to an OAL of 3.590" only because that length works best in my barrel. You can treat the Swift manual depiction of 3.60" OAL as reaching the cannelure as "aspirational". +1 what others have...

Would you use single shot for Dangerous Game?

Yup. BTDT on Cape Buffalo and at a MV of 2100fps. I won't now, because: - My eyes are old, and the factory stock is not designed for a solid cheek weld using optics. - The PH that I accompanied and have complete trust with through many hunts has retired. I outta retire too, but I'm not that smart.

Norma 6.5mm 143gr Bondstrike? Looking for feedback, try with Free Shipping

The good folks at Frontline Rejects have done some testing of both the 143-grain version in 6.5 CM and the 180-grain version in a 300 WM. I have loaded the 143-grain in a 6.5 CM to just over 2,750 fps MV using a double-based powder. I took a large (500 lb live weight) cow elk at around 170...

Big Bore DG Rifle - Recoil Energy - How Much is Too Much?

My recoil tolerance to where I can shoot them well and quickly is both the 450/400 NE 3" and the 400 H&H, both weighing all up at just over 10lbs and launching at their traditional MVs. Beyond those, it begins to be not fun.

    9.3x62 Noob

    9.3x62 Noob

I just remembered a video sometime back of Bill Wilson, of Wilson Combat and New Ultralight Arms talking about his favorite Africa hunting cartridge. 9.3x62 Noob

Good choice of cartridge. Since you handload, I'll note I load all manner of 250 grain bullets to ~2,550+ fps MV. Very effective. I suggest you locate a copy of the 9.3x62 Mauser Journal if you don't yet have one. There's a whole lotta learning condensed in there.

My Aunt, on the adjoining ranch hunted everything with the .257 Roberts. No one knew it was underpowered using Winchester Silvertips and Remington Core-lokts. From managing coyotes during the Spring calving / lambing, Pronghorn, Mule deer and Elk it simply got it done without much drama. That's...

Am I the only one who has ever missed?

Ha! 1st Safari, 1st shot, some 30 years ago. I was so damn excited to actually seeing African game I forgot the cardinal rule - aim small, hit small. Fortunately, (knock on wood) I've yet to lose wounded game, though I've gone on my fair share of long strolls through the bush.

@Shootist43, I appreciate you running down some information from your sources. A New Offering Of .375 Holland & Holland Magnum Ammunition Has Been Released On The Market

The last time I tested .375 H&H factory ammo it was Federal's Premium Safari 300 grain A-Frame. Federal promised on the box a MV of 2,450 fps. From my 24" barrel 10 rounds produced an actual MV of 2,447 fps. Not too shabby. The SD & ES numbers were horrid, but out to ~150 yards, it doesn't...

    The .257 Roberts thread

I chose a McMillan 'R' fiberglass stock. I chose that one for the Pronghorn getter because the stock's forend is slightly flatter, and the stock's overall weight is slightly heavier, so the rifle rides a soft backpack very well at the prone shot. All my other synthetic stocks are Bansner.

    The .257 Roberts thread

I chose a M77 Mk 1 .30-06 donor action for my build for a few reasons: - I wanted the LA magazine box because I would be launching long-ish .257 bullets - I focused on the +P loads so I chose the SAAMI MAP of the .30-06 (60k psi) as my upper limit - I prefer the tang safety of the Mk 1 action...

    The .257 Roberts thread

My custom Roberts is a dedicated Pronghorn rifle, and I'll also use it on wheat field Muleys. Using +P brass I load the 110 grain ELD-X to just over 3,000 fps MV using either H4350 or StaBALL 6.5. The 110 grain bullet is plenty for the mentioned body weights.

    Case gauge for 9.3x62mm?

I've been searching for a 9.3x62mm case gauge for manually checking brass after FL sizing. Wilson simply calls it a Case Gauge, Hornady calls it a Cartridge Gauge, and Lyman calls it a Case Length Headspace Gauge. None of these vendors offers their product in 9.3x62mm, and the Hornady custom...

NEEDING QUALITY BRASS AND BULLETS FOR A 9.3X62

Not weird. I have a supply of both Norma 275 grain solid and Federal 286 grain Hydro factory ammo. However, what is weird is Hornady cataloging a 300 grain DGS, but not a 300 grain DGX Bonded.

I sure wish the 240 grain Weldcores for the .30-06 would come available again. I have a working load using H4831SC, but I want to work up another load using N555, which is a touch faster burning. However, I'm doubting those are high on the priority list for Woodleigh these days (sigh).

I guess trophy hunting is partly about what I don't shoot. It took 2 trips of hard hunting to come across the Kudu I had imagined in my mind. I'd never seen Gerhard so excited and in awe over what we had accomplished together in downing that magnificent animal. I've lost count of the number...
