How do you spend your free time?

We have a small family owned civil construction business in Alaska. In other words we have bought ourselves a job. When I’m not working I’m doing something else thinking about work. It’s taking its toll.

    New premium rifle or custom

I live and hunt in Alaska. The wet part. 100” plus rain a year. There is nothing wrong with a properly sealed wood stock. I have a Tikka with a wood stock that gets absolutely soaked. Also, we have plenty of alders. Stainless is nice but it will still rust unless it’s an old Ruger All...

    Game Department Rifles

Yes they are called BAR’s. I’ve owned 3 of them over the years. The standard ‘06 case family worked fine, accurate enough, the 300 magnum I owned was a constant jammer that went back to Browning twice. A neighbor had one in .338 magnum and carried it in the big bear woods with no issue. I’d...

I could be missing your point since you are a military guy. I don’t know how one such as myself having never served would compare percentage of participation in the GWOT to WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Bush War, etc. since there was no draft for it. Also a lot of them had to go back for multiple...

    Model 71 experience?

I have one. 1938 Deluxe. It may have been fired before I got it, but it for sure has now. . Random thoughts: If you’re going to buy a shooter, don’t sweat the long tang/short tang. If you’re thinking more along the lines of holding value, long tang. Also the craftsmanship superb on the...

    Rhodesia

I believe Smith was aware of their system’s downfalls. They needed to be landowners to vote as an example wasn’t probably the best idea (however the small portion of Atilla the Hun in me agrees just a little with that). At any rate, they were working on it. It’s too bad they didn’t get any...

These small caliber, using match bullet vs a good bonded drive me crazy

This is always a good discussion that never gets heated. The .224 77 TMK, 73 and 75 ELDm kills NA animals with authority as does a bonded 75gr Speer Gold Dot. Pages upon pages of documentation. In my experience it is almost too much of a good thing inside of 400 yards if you like to eat...

Happy to. It has those 3 barrels headspaced to the receiver. With the appropriate action wrench and a barrel vise they can be swapped in a few minutes to a different cartridge. The recoil lug is pinned so it stays put. Same receiver, multiple cartridges. The 7RM barrel was the first one...

Do exhibitors make money at the big shows?

I have done lots and lots of shows. The jerky and roasted nut vendors do the best. Once, stationed next to a southern CA fishing club, I struck up conversation with the booth attendants. We talked about all the folks walking by but no one stopping. The guys said “wait until tomorrow”. They...

What is the best car you have ever owned?

First Gen Ford Raptor SVT 6.2. Bone stock, with the exception of updated front coil - overs. 230K miles. Everything works. It gets hammered on running the gauntlet of rural Alaska potholes. Fast and uses lots of gas. Best truck I’ve ever seen.

How to get value for custom rifle?

They are hard to sell much less get close to the original investment. My dad told me this years ago and of course I always knew better. Bone stock all original with a reasonable price and you can recover, mostly. I’ve done way too many of them, might get .50 on the dollar if lucky. It’s...

    Winchester Model 70 .225 Winchester

Push-feed, not sure date of manufacture but definitely ‘64 or newer. They didn’t make a huge number of these, kinda oddball. This rifle came to me stocked in a hideous Fajen thumb hole, I found a factory stock for it. Stock is not the original. It’s nice however I believe it has been...

    Winchester 70 bottom metal

I recently got a push feed mdl 70 in .225 Win. And a bunch of factory ammo. Some savage had put it in a Fajen thumb hole stock. I found an original, it’s ok, been sanded a little but not horrible, and a little whittling was done on the barrel channel. Should make a good shooter/trading...
