Difference in Velocities for .308 Barrels

Forgive my ignorance about what I am to ask. Has anyone done any experimenting with factory ammo and the true velocities they get compared to real life velocities? Are there any brands or brand of ammo makers that live up to their published velocities? What about hand loading? Can I expect to...

Difference in Velocities for .308 Barrels

I have owned 2 M77’s in my lifetime, and they both had beautiful wood. The.25-06 I used to have would group like the American rifle. But it was at least 2 or 3 pounds heavier, and after a long day of hunting, I was feeling that heft. Plus, I never wanted to scratch or ding the stock on the M77’s...

Difference in Velocities for .308 Barrels

LOL I know better than to use “Bubba” measurements. I knew someone would ask, and I have the photo proof. Mind you, this is a 25 yd pistol target I repurposed because I didn’t have any other targets at the moment.

Difference in Velocities for .308 Barrels

I own a Ruger American Rifle in .308 Winchester. It has a 22 inch barrel, with a 1-10 twist. My questions are: #1 - Does a 1-10 inch twist give higher velocities than a 1-12 inch twist barrel of comparable length? #2 - What advantages are there of having a 1-10 inch twist barrel for a .308...

9.3 X62 brass and bullet powder recommendation

You’re not wrong. The Partitions are exactly as you describe them. The only bonded bullets Nosler has are the Accubonds. They are a more advanced ballistic tip, in essence.

9.3 X62 brass and bullet powder recommendation

I’m thinking that it isn’t optimal for a case larger than the .45-70 or .444 Marlin. RL-17 works the best in the 9.3x62 with heavier bullets. I’m not sure about CFE 223. It works really well in the ‘06 case and turns the .35 Whelen into a different animal altogether when loaded to the gills.

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

May I interject here, that this thread has never been, or will it ever be that the 9.3x62 is better than the .375 H&H. With the capability of the new powders, and the efficiency of the case, the 9.3x62, can equal the old, 20th century loads of the .375 H&H, if loaded to 64k psi. Now, to also...

9.3 X62 brass and bullet powder recommendation

You’re quite right about that. The .375 H&H is more of everything than a 9.3x62, definitely. The author of this thread wanted hand loading options for the 9.3x62. I was just trying to show how far up they could go with it, and not bring in the .375 H&H debate. Hawk

9.3 X62 brass and bullet powder recommendation

One can load the 9.3 to 64k psi, if wanted. The only limiting factor in doing so is felt recoil. One can always choose to stay at the normal factory psi, or go up to 60k or 62k psi. The 9.3 can be a different animal if you so decide. The ultimate decision is always up to the person who is hand...

9.3 X62 brass and bullet powder recommendation

Here’s a little excerpt from a Bob Mitchell in Canada. What the .375 H&H will do with a 300gr, the 9.3 x 62 will do from a 286gr, and both have the same SD. But the heavier you go the closer they get! A 300gr from the 9.3 x 62 in a 22.5″ modern rifle will do 2550 fps/ 4331 ft-lbs at 64,000...

9.3 X62 brass and bullet powder recommendation

I’m a proponent for the 9.3x62 myself. With your statement above, boy don’t let the .375 H&H aficionados hear that statement. They’ll definitely get their noses pushed out of joint! LOL But you’re absolutely right about upping the psi to bring it into a more modern era. I have some load data on...

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

I have to admit that when I started this thread, I should have thought more on what the title should’ve been. It should have been something like 9.3x62, a great cartridge made better, or Old Cartridge 9.3x62 New ballistics, something to that effect. With upped velocities, I have seen what...

    Sauer 100 Black in 9.3x62

The weight of the rifle with scope is just hair over 8lbs. It’s synthetic stock is the most ridged one I’ve ever had. Plus it has a pillar bedding in it, which are aluminum blocks, that the action screws pass through to the receiver. With the geometry of the stock, and depending on how you want...

What Have You Killed with Your .308 Winchester?

I am not ashamed to say that in my youth, when I was in my early twenties, I was also swayed by my hairy chested, this is manly group of friends who only hunted with 7mm Magnum and 300 Magnum rifles. I, let them persuade me into getting one of the fire breathing dragons, testosterone dripping...

What Have You Killed with Your .308 Winchester?

Anyone else have experience with a Ruger American Rifle in .308? I went to do final sight in with the scope, and I was dumbfounded to see 8 shots into an inch give or take a hair less or more. I had used the regular Silver/Gray Winchester Power Point rounds. Just because it’s plentiful and...

What Have You Killed with Your .308 Winchester?

I recently sighted in my Ruger American Rifle, and it’s in .308. I’ve been wondering exactly what can I hunt with this round? I have a tack driver of a rifle. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the 8 round group all within an inch. When hand loaded, can I expect to not get the same level of...

I’m sure you were as surprised as I was when you saw that happening. I have a Sig Sauer Buckmaster 3-9x40 with BDC, not exactly cheap, but not overly expensive. That glass is clear and works well for me. The whole combo is nothing short of amazing to me for being an entry level Rifle, cheap...

.308 Winchester hand load data and Ruger American Rifle

When I saw the group I took a picture of above with that crap ammo, my mouth dropped. I didn’t quite believe it either. It was 8 rounds into an inch. I was dumbfounded. That’s why I took the picture. No one would believe me if I just said it without proof. The proof is right there in the...

.308 Winchester hand load data and Ruger American Rifle

To tell you the truth, I wasn’t expecting the Winchester 150 gr Power Points to be that accurate. They’re usually a lot less accurate from personal experience. Usually 1.5” or greater accuracy. I was using that ammo to get the final zero for my scope, and to have Winchester brass available to...

.308 Winchester hand load data and Ruger American Rifle

I almost always take vital area shots, heart-lung area over anything else. I’m not the type that shoots at game a half mile away. I like to keep my shots within the range it was meant to used. Usually 400 - 500 m. The usual hunting distances I’ve shot game has been 75 - 275m. I know the .308 is...

.308 Winchester hand load data and Ruger American Rifle

The range of game animals I will be hunting with it is coyote on up to elk. The Barnes TTSX mono metal bullets, 130 gr to 168 gr would work well. But, what would be a good one bullet load that can be used on everything? I know .30-06 pundits say a good 165 - 168 gr bullet. Would the same...

.308 Winchester hand load data and Ruger American Rifle

I thought maybe, just maybe, that the 178 gr ELDX might be a good compromise for what velocity the 308 can achieve along with it being a little softer than usual hunting bullets. I haven’t had any bad experiences yet with Hornady bullets. I have some 150 gr Spire Points on hand, but wasn’t sure...

I’ve had my Ruger American Rifle in .308 Winchester for some time, but just got a chance to go shoot it recently. It did really well with the Winchester 150gr Power Point factory ammo. 8 shots into a one inch group. I was wondering if any of you had load data they would like to share with me...
