One rifle for North American big game?

    Spoken as a true firearms enthusiast. Then you need to subdivide those. < 100 meters/yards, > 100 meters/yards, < 300 meters/yards, > 300 meters/yards. Lots of choices for the single North American type animal's cartridge/rifle combination. The 7mm's, 30 calibers, 338's offer quite a few...

    Some not so common Handguns

I don't have anything as cool or unusual as this, nor the other neat stuff that has been shown. I suppose as far as I have gotten of the major mainstream path is the 454 Casulls, 480 Rugers, and 475 Linebaughs that I have. They are in standard configurations of single and or double actions...

I can certainly appreciate the simplicity of one. But, I am definitely not a by example of such.

One rifle for North American big game?

I cannot disagree with your choices. I am a fan of both the 338 Winchester and 375 Ruger cartridges. For anything whitetail size and above, at 300 yards and under, I would not hesitate to use my 20" 375 Ruger. The 270 grain Barnes LRX at 2700 plus a few fps, is my current favorite for a single...

    Why no 375 RUM?

The 375 RUM has always been an intriguing cartridge, to me. Particularly in a Winchester M70 Classic stainless. I have just never taken that plunge. If you have to right bullet, not much that it will not do, up close or far. I still get fleeting thoughts of owning one.

458 Flat Nosed Solids For Elephant

Hard to tell from the picture, and pictures can be deceptive. But, is that a > mark below the crimp line ? New brass ? Almost as if the crimped portion was impeded from straightening to length. Definitely strange.

I would not have thought the powder choice created that case mouth condition.

    Factory .416 Taylor Rifles

John Wooters, Gun/Outdoor writer, gave the 416 Taylor a bit of favorable publicity. Tough crowd for sales on anything above .30 caliber in the market place. I doubtful that Ruger would set up to compete with their own cartridge. Unless, a distributor such as Lipsey's made a deal and ordered a...

    Factory .416 Taylor Rifles

I would pay equal to what the same rifle in a 338 Winchester would sell for. Prior to the 416 Remington chambering the Winchester M70, I had some interest in the 416 Taylor. The 416 Remington pretty much killed that interest. The 416 Ruger definitely did. It is certainly a good cartridge...

Article on heavier vs lighter for caliber bullet penetration

Fact: Anyone that knows Michael458, Knows he ain't selling nor attempting to sell shat in the firearms, bullets, and or cartridge world. An example: Literally he developed and re-worked loads, pressure tested bullets and powders in the 458 Lott, basically for me. He moved on from the Lott...

300 Win Mag or 325 WSM

I was an 8mm appreciator without an 8mm; until the 325 came out. Unfortunately, Winchester closed its doors shortly after the 325's introduction. I had no real like nor dislike for the WSMs. But, the 7 and 8mm versions pushed my button. It still seems to me the 8mm Winchester would be near...

Article on heavier vs lighter for caliber bullet penetration

I have followed Michael's testing from at least 2009. Incredibly research, the different types bullets fired, and the numbers of bullets fired, and tested in test media and the large game they are intended, are astonishing. From in bleachers, that was following the 458 Winchester Hammer...

One rifle for North American big game?

The 35 Whelen would certainly work well. But, I will stick with the 338 Winchester. Maybe, I could go along with a one cartridge concept. But, way too far along in life for the one rifle approach. I like my rifles.

What motivates a change in powder?

Aside from the 2 main reasons that you listed, velocity and multi use in different cartridges with a couple of different bullet weights and or types. Although, for my pet cartridges and their bullets, the multi use function is not a priority. I have some powders, driven by availability...

416 Ruger VS 416 Rem Mag

This is load data from Federal, for the 416 Remington, Rigby, and Ruger. Federal is a member of SAAMI, we will assume all these loads are SAAMI pressure compliant. Since there is no disclaimer otherwise. As loaded, the same bullet coming out of 3 different 416 cartridges, all are virtually the...

416 Ruger VS 416 Rem Mag

Kind of like Boddington trying to locate the early sources of the 416 Remington extraction issues. Functional rifle and sensible loads eliminate lots of potential issues, regardless of cartridge or rifle. I have loaded the 416 Ruger with the 350 TTSX to ~2560 from a 20" barrel, and shot...

416 Ruger VS 416 Rem Mag

A quick web search shows Sportman's Warehouse and Mid South having 416 Ruger ammo in stock. It is on the shelves here, in at least 3 local stores. It has been pretty available locally. Locally, usually where there was the Remington, there was the Ruger.

416 Ruger VS 416 Rem Mag

The Ruger actually, less SAAMI MAOP than the Remington. Depending on the brass, with the same bullets seated to length for Ruger 3.4" type actions and 416 Remington in a Winchester Model 70 3.6", the case capacities can be less than 2 grains of water difference. I have both. I have shot a few...

    340 Weatherby Mag

I think the 340 Weatherby is a fine cartridge. A buddy of mine killed a very large brown bear with the 340 WBY and a 225 grain Barnes X-bullet. I suppose the popularity is due to the limited brands of factory rifles that it has been chambered in, predominantly Weatherby's offerings...

    325 WSM

I am pretty much committed to the Barnes 200 grain TSX. They seemed to group very well out of couple of Kimber Montana's with the DoubleTap factory loads. So, I bought quite a few for hand loading. There was a guy, that use to post of different forums, he was a big 325 fan. I think that he...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

There is another report on this forum of using the .458 404 grain Hammer Shock Hammer. And, on another forum the .416 325 grain Hammer Shock Hammer. Frontal shot and the bullet was found in the hip. One shot and done. This may have also been posted by the hunter on this forum. There is...

    325 WSM

I would guess about 120 fps less than a 24" barrel. Strictly a guess. I have a couple in the 22-1/2" length range. I have not chronograph'd before or after the cuts. Hopefully this summer, I will.

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

I have both. I would pick the 416 version for a dedicated dangerous game rifle. I believe with equal designed bullets, similar weight class per caliber; the 416 impacts harder and breaks / busts bone better. Trajectory differences for 200 yards and under are very insignificant in my opinion...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

Some folks really like them for such. I have never tried them. I wish Barnes would have rolled the 325 X into the TSX line. Maybe it would have evolved into a TTSX. I started with the 350's was very pleased with the accuracy and performance. Though, I always though a 325 mono might be a...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

I cannot speak to the 416 Rigby specifically. But, the 350 grain TSX out of a 416 Ruger has performed excellent on a couple of moose for me. I am also just beginning working with the 350 TTSX, Hammer Bullets 325 grain Shock Hammer, and the CEB 325 grain Maximus.

found on gun broker Winchester Model 70 375 H&H

The factory Classic stainless 375 H&H's were pretty popular in Alaska when in production. It appears they remain so, on the used market. They are great candidates for barrel swaps to 416 Remington & the .458's.

  35. L

Yeah!!! We have a group !!!

Those Buffalo Bore loads, with the 350 grain TSX and the Lehigh 350 grain solid, are definitely not lacking in the velocity department. The Lehigh solid is a bit more pointed than I care for. I would have liked a wider meplat on that bullet. Something closer to CEB's 350 grain Safari Solid'...

    338 Winchester Magnum

Your entire post was most interesting to me. As many of us, I am a firearms enthusiast and have several different rifles in various cartridges. I have not used a 338 Winchester in several years. CZ550 vs Ruger Hawkeye African in 416?

As to the rifles themselves, I would not be surprised or shocked if either needed a bit of smoothing out to feed certain bullets. 416 Ruger DGS 400 grain on Xero C1 Pro Chronograph

Fyi, I see another Federal "discontinued" listing of the .416 400 grain Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer Solid, listed as a 1.380" length. Not sure which one is the current. I don't see a product number for either. I wonder if that length was a typo, or for the older non grooved version ?

416 Ruger DGS 400 grain on Xero C1 Pro Chronograph

Additional load data from Federal's site for comparison. Per Federal info, this bullet is 1.487" in length. I measure about 1.5960" for the 350 TTSX. A difference of about .109" longer for the TTSX. But, my COAL is about .100" longer than they are seating this 400 grain. Plus the boat tail of...

416 Ruger DGS 400 grain on Xero C1 Pro Chronograph

He may or not, be using a powder not available to over the counter sales. I have some of the TSX loaded for comparison to equal charges of the TTSX. The shorter flat base TSX, may very well exceed the velocity of the longer TTSX boat tail, with the same powder charge. But, winter weather has...

When is the load good enough for Dangerous Game

I think, a consistent 1 MOA rifle load is pretty dang good. It does not seem like in too ancient of history, that 1 MOA was the sought after accuracy in a hunting rifle.

416 Ruger DGS 400 grain on Xero C1 Pro Chronograph

I am using the 2000-MR with the 350 TTSX. I referenced the Speer #15 also. My velocity goal was 2500 fps out of my 20" barrel. What I did not have was the actual Speer bullet to visually compare. I am going to try and order some for actual comparison purposes. I am most certainly not saying...
