    Beretta S56E

Dewald, interesting that you also have a 695 Tikka in 6.5x55 although mine is Left Handed. I just got hold of one of the Musgrave models of this shotgun, now the wait for the license..... Going to punish the Guineas! And the rockies.

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

I posted before that I usually wear my Fenix 6X as it has a GPS and I use that to mark where I take shots, where I last see blood, where the camp is etc. But I have recently got a watch that blew me away , an automatic diver with a little South African angle. Draken is a microbrand named after...

Serious Safety Concerns for South Africa Hunt

Your PH is also your head of security. And you have a rifle. You will be fine.

    A new plains game rifle

The only reason I suggested a mono metal bullet is the fact he is getting pressure in future enviromental regulations where he lives. Poor Californians and UK peeps.

    A new plains game rifle

People must realise that Africa has many different hunting terrains and a 375 may not be common in the area he is going to hunt. The owner and PH will suggest what they know. I would get a 7x64 setup right for longer shots (mainly a good scope). Load a 140gr mono bullet and you will do fine...

    6.5 Creedmoor for hunting

I stand up to pee, I shoot a 6.5x55 ;) But the 6.5 Creedmoor can pretty much match it with good bullets. Once the mindset of target bullets is dropped.
  8. S

    6.5 Creedmoor for hunting

Shooting 140gr GameKings only do well in the damage department if the impacts are over 150m away. If you shoot anything closer it does make a mess.

    6.5 Creedmoor for hunting

Id be interesting in your results with the GameChanger tipped bullet. Target bullets for hunting is the downfall of the Creed like Mr Glass says. We hunt for meat so losing a large percentage of a small Springbuck is an issue.

    6.5 Creedmoor for hunting

I have shot black wildebeest at around 200m with the Swede, the long 6.5 bullets do better than you think. I think the line is something like Gemsbok in the dunes. But even then a well placed shot will do.

    6.5 Creedmoor for hunting

PS, my mate shot two Eland in two years with his creedmore and 140gr S&B bullets. A big bull in the neck and a small cow in the lungs, both less than 50m in the Bushveld. It can work. But a load with the 156gr Oryx at 2500fps is magic for anything in the bush. This is the same as I load in...

    6.5 Creedmoor for hunting

You will be fine with the Creed and SGC , just why take shots over 350m at all? I have done a bit of voorsit hunting and shooting further than that just means the animals are not being driven correctly. I have shot my 6.5x55 for over 23 years now, and for voorsit I use the Sierra Gameking...

    35 Whelen or 300 Win??

Namibia is more wide open than say the Bushveld. Longer shots are probably the norm, take the 300. The few inches less drop can be handy.

300 Winchester Magnum bullets for plains game

I have seen enough meat damage and injured animals amongst friends who use ELD-X to not want to shoot them at game. Some pro cullers will benefit from the great accuracy and good for them. The average man on the street should steer clear of them.
  17. S

300 Winchester Magnum bullets for plains game

    I'd rather use a 180gr Interlock than a 178gr ELD-X. Unless I was ringing gongs.

Why a .338 WM in Africa?

If you are not shooting any DG and your hunt is in a more open area then there is absolutely nothing wrong with a .338 WM. Its a great choice for Eland and things like Gemsbok at distance. Trophy hunting is also not worried about meat damage so even using it in the bushveld is fine. As long...

    28 Nosler For Africa

It would be awesome to take a special rifle on a special hunt, for that I am 1000% behind the idea. Just dont fall into the trap of shooting high BC target bullets at game. No matter how accurate they are. Also dont take stupid long shots just because you think the rifle deserves them. Good...

    Caliber 30-30 use in Africa???

This was one of those Savages 340's with the split rear breech. Rough little thing, near Thabazimbi the bush is so thick you are shooting through holes at 50m. A 150gr .30 cal bullet starting at 2400fps works wonders.

    Caliber 30-30 use in Africa???

I dont know if I mentioned it but the owner of one of the farm I hunt on has this wierd old bolt action 30-30 that he uses for camp meat. Mostly wildebeest. 50-70m in the thick stuff, it works. Why would a lever gun not do the same.

What gun do Professional Hunters like to use?

My opinions, You get two types of PH , I think the one post above kinda shows this. Newbie starting out or DG part timer vs the old hand that might be a land owner or is well off due to a successful long standing operation focussing on DG. For the newbies, cost a major factor. 1. A factory...

.308 Win in Africa - fan or foe?

There are two types of people in the bushveld. .308ers and .30-06ers. We look down on the poor .308ers but I have to accept that it gets the job done.
  30. S

An all round rifle caliber , for Africa and elsewhere

.30-06 is like a boiled chicken breast. It will feed you but has no flavour or appeal. Get a 300 H&H that is basically a 30-06 ++ and do everything with it. But its spicey and delicious.
  31. S

7mm/08 for Plains Game? Good or Bad?

I shoot all of that with 156gr bullet out of a 6.5x55 so would have little issue with a 150gr out of a 7mm-08. You will probably shoot it better too, go for it.

    Cartridges you just hate

I love the BHP. My war gun would be a Hi-Power with a few 15 round mags. But I started getting guns in the 90's, so I am sold of the .40. A caliber people hate, but my go to for serious defence is a Glock 23 backed up by a 27. I dont think I hate any pistol calibers.
  33. S

    Cartridges you just hate

This boils down to where I started hunting and my observations in the field. 1. .270 - guys taking this into the bushveld messed this up for me. 2. Anything Weatherby apart from the 300. 3. 6.5 Creedmoor with target bullets. Berger, ELD-X, "ballistic tip" please leave this on the range.

    Hornady 30cal on PG

I'd use Interbond or Interlok , the SST is a lot more "explosive" A 180gr in those at around 2850fps will be so good.

What should I do with this rifle?

I'm a Zastava fan, I love my LH 9.3x62 and will be building my dream rifle on a LH magnum action this year. Leave the rifle as it is, give it to someone starting out in hunting. Cant go wrong. I helped a newbie mate win a Zastava synthetic 30-06 on an auction and he came hunting with me last...

    Recommended Ammo for .375 H&H?

When it comes to a 375 for plains game, just get the simplest 270/300gr ammo that groups in your particular rifle. It really does not matter which manufacturer or bullet design, its more important your rifle likes them. If you are not a reloader that is. And then shoot it a bit so you know...

    Thoughts on a 7X57 Rimmed

I would not stress the difference between 7x57 and 7x57R , S&B's 173gr load will flatten anything non dangerous in Africa. They load the R and non-R to the same spec anyway. Single shots can have long barrels, they just look short.

    6.5x55 sweed

Gert, my 6.5x55 is an older Tikka M695, basically the TX3 ancestor. Long thoat and shoots everything really well. My hunting load is currently Norma Oryx at +-2500fps and I will take everything short of Eland with this. Im going to switch to Rhino 140gr bullets as the ups and downs of...

    25-06 Rem in Africa

The other caliber that they seem to have on special is the .338 WinMag. Get one of those too. The 25-06 was quite popular at one point, enough for PMP to even make ammo for it. Its far from the ideal Impala cartridge, given where you find Impala. Its the perfect Black Wildebeest or Red...

    Concealed Carry

I have recently given friends advice that seems to be working, get something you will carry even if you feel lazy and dont want to carry. When I feel the threat in the air I load up with real guns but more often than not I make do with a 38 in the pocket or some other cop out. I've bought a...

.308 Win for SA Plains Game

Some gun nuts make the rifle and ballistic part of a hunting trip into something spicy, like a good starter to a fantastic main meal. Others have a palate cleansing plain old Sorbet before the main. This is the .308, Vanilla. It will work without any mess or fuss.

Looking for rifle suggestions for upcoming safari

For this I will just go with which ever one you shoot the most accurately. Sub MOA shooting to point of aim is better than anything with small animals where you are not worried about meat damage.
