    VAT questions.....

Hello to all; I've been thinking about doing another hunt in Africa. I hunted in SA back in 2014, and if I remember correctly, I didn't have to pay VAT on my trophies because I had them taxidermied (is that even a word?) and shipped to my home. The cost of that was almost as much as the...

    Turkey Calls

Kind of new to turkey hunting. Nothing new or 'custom'. I have diaphragm, box, push button, and slate calls. I primarily use the box and diaphragm calls......use the box call to bring them in and then use the diaphragm so they don't see my hands move. .....but one of the best calls I have...

    Bugs in Taxidermy Mounts

Are you talking taxidermy mounts over time, or recently taxidermy done? I had my kudu skull mount done in SA and when I got it back, there were maggots in the horns. I took it to a local taxidermist who recommended I spray the inside with an insecticide (which I did) and let it dry in the sun...

    Discontinued Product Frustration

My list: 1.) Alliant powders.......esp. the shotgun/pistol ones. 2.) the following powders discontinued by Hodgdon when they took over DuPont and Winchester: H414, SR 4756, 800-X, IMR 4320, and all those that ares "supposedly" still in production, but can't be found ANYWHERE! 3.) Winchester...

I'm hearing BS - Set me straight on Powders being discontinued!?

I was told last summer (2024), by multiple gun stores, that Alliant would no longer be supplying powder to the civilian market........don't know the reason (military only, bought out by another group, etc). Came as a big blow to my reloading, as I used a lot of Alliant powders (Unique, Herco...

    So.......what COMPANIES do you dislike?

Well, we've done firearms and calibers............so, what companies do you dislike, for whatever reason. I have three (at the moment) Remington: I've never seen a company that loves to take something good (or in some instances, great), and turn around and cheapen it to the point where it is...

You want to buy something special, you want to treat yourself, what rifle do you buy?

Over my lifetime, I've pretty much gotten everything that I had a hankering for..........there are only a few that I never got (and at this stage of my life, probably wont). I always wanted a British SMLE military rifle in .303 British; a .410 shotgun (either a pump or SxS double); and a...

    What did you reload today?

100 rounds of 16 gauge buckshot (12 pellets of #1 buck); 50 rounds of 12 gauge bismuth (duck load....1 1/4 ounce of #4) and 25 rounds of 20 gauge bismuth (1 oz of #5s).

How did you get your handle or user name?

I'm a big fan of the 16 gauge......use it for probably 90% of my bird and waterfowl hunting chores. I have three shotguns chambered in said gauge: A Remington model 11, and Ithaca M37 featherlite, and a Stoeger SxS. As for the "Mr." part..........we were hunting chukars on a pheasant...

30-06 Rifle for Plains Game - How Big?

I'm no "expert", but in 2014 I took my .30-06 to Africa as a "back up" and ended up using it to harvest 4 out of my 5 trophies. I shot gemsbok, kudu, impala and a cow waterbuck. All were one shot kills with the exception of the gemsbok, which I initially made a bad shot on, so the fault was...

Rifle is to scary for South Africa?

You've got to remember: in this day and age of woke liberalism, it's not what a something "does" or "is", but "what it looks like". .......which, it you think about it for a moment, is basically the same thing as racism........but I'm just over thinking again.

How many of you go hunting in Africa by yourself? Seems that most folks are going with family/friends. I've only been once, but my wife went along..............she doesn't hunt, but loves to travel and she got to see and do some "touristy" things. I would like to go back, but I have few...

    Highveld Taxidermy experience?

Avoid them like the plague!!! I had a skull mount done (kudu) and when I got it back, there were maggots in the horns! The "crate' that the shipped it in were not much better than thick cardboard, and the crate was damaged when I recieved it. there was a fracture on the nose of the kudu...

    Dove Hunting in the US

Never been able to hunt doves in my home state of Michigan..........the one time they tried to pass a season, the antis shot it down with lies (big surprise), and it was voted down. I would like to hunt doves before I go to my reward.......I even made my own decoys. I tried to find an...

    Importing moose meat from Canada

Well, I sent my questions via email to both the USDA and the CBP; neither one answered my questions, but referred me to the sections on their websites that I had the questions about (like rereading it for the 100th time would be a eureka moment:cautious:) They then referred me to the other...

One gun or two? On safari

All I can tell you is what happened to me from personal experience. I hunted Limpopo in 2014 for plains game and took two rifles......a 30-06 and a .338 Win. mag. I was planning on taking ALL my game with the .338. First critter I shot was a blue wildebeest, and when I went to reload for my...

    Importing moose meat from Canada

Hello All; I was planning a cow moose hunt into Canada, but after reading the USDA website, it says that I can only bring in 50 lbs of meat..........if this is the case, then there is no point in my spending the money for the hunt. I then saw on the CBP website that I could bring in the...

    Recent RSA taxidermists experience

I hunted in Limpopo in 2014. I was planning on bringing my articles for taxidermy back to the states, but a slick presentation and a "we can't guarantee that the dip/pack will successfully make it back to the states" line convinced me to have it done in S.A. All I can say...

    Im done with steel shot

As someone else has stated, higher velocity steel loads kill better.........we shot a mallard once 13 TIMES after it hit the water and the bird still kept swimming; when we paddled the canoe out to get it, when we got the bird in the boat, and shook it, all you heard were pellets that fell out...

    Should parents be held responsible?

Not true..........they were discovered in an abandoned building in Detroit. They may CLAIM that they were in "fear for their lives", but to date no one has been able to prove that. If they were going to "turn themselves in", they had plenty of opportunity to do so; and didn't. They also...

I'm from MI as well; in most cases, I don't feel that the parents should be held responsible......but in this case, I feel differently. I bought a GAMO air rifle scope for my recently acquired Remington 552.....I've taken the combo out now a couple of times for squirrels and so far the rifle has held it's zero. I think that the scope retails for around $40 or so. Good luck with your quest.

    .30-06, 180gr Bullets, favorite powder?

My 30-06 Interarms Mk X likes IMR 4064 with most 180 grain slugs............not a speedy load compared to others, but quite accurate. I also have a load using 180 grain Nosler partitions and 58.0 grains of Reloader 19, a Remington case, and a CCI 200 primer that is quite accurate as well.

What was your first African Game?

Blue wildebeest for me. Taken on first safari in 2014. Wasn't part of my package, but since this is the animal that always symbolized "Africa" for me, I really wanted to take one.,,,,,,so I payed a little extra for the privilege. Taken with my Ruger 77 in .338 Win Mag and 225 grain Nosler...

    Is bismuth shot worth it?

I handload and use both; steel in my 12 gauge 870 (which does most of my serious waterfowling work) and bismuth for my thinner barreled 1100 and my smaller gauges (16 and 20 gauge). I also like to hunt with traditional muzzleloaders (including shotguns), and steel is not an alternative for a...

sxs shotguns: 20 vs 12 for game?

Another vote for the 16 gauge............;) If you already shoot 12 gauges, then I would stick with a 12, as ammo can be hard to come by. I quit using lead hunting loads (with a few exceptions) a few years back. Makes life simpler if I jump a wood duck or mallard while out hunting...
