I was black bear hunting in Alberta in the late 1980’s. There was a shop in Peace River that had polar bear hides for sale. One of the guys from camp was really interested in one. I told him he couldn’t bring it back to the states. I always wondered how many times some of those hides got sold...
Too bad I have to live in the real world without “magical Goldilocks bullets”.
Physics and rifle fit is what contributes to felt recoil.
I am still waiting to see my .404 Jeffery completed. Components for the .404 come at a premium and availability is low compared to other calibers.
Curious as...
Here is my solution. I went a slightly different route with mine.
I talked to JJ and I had already bought a base from him for another rifle to look at. It mounted the red dot much higher than was my preference. The rib is lower on the other rifle and not objectionable .
After looking at all the...
Been a minute since I pulled much. Would think I could tell when I reseated if it still had enough neck tension or not.
I am not the easiest person nor the hardest on equipment. My RCBS inertia puller I have used over 35 years. Only bought the Lyman because it works on the larger cases.
I bought a Lyman inertia puller for my .416 Rigby. I just went down to my bench and put a .500 N.E. in it with the collet behind the case so it would still tighten up when assembled. Worked on the .500, no problem. .470 looks to use the same shell holder so it should work. I might make a washer...
Absolutely better than an R8, probably akin to a R16!:cautious:
Not so sure about the easier on the eyes as some of the R8s have some pretty nice wood.
Two loads and two scopes have been covered before. https://www.africahunting.com/threads/one-rifle-two-scopes.75293/
There is a ton of...
To paraphrase Mark Twain, “ it is better to be thought a fool than post on YouTube and remove all doubt.”
Really curious if or how they were able to judge that bear at that range seeing what they could see. It was going to come down hill regardless.
Bears are not that easy to judge.
Just for fun I ran some numbers on some of the low .4xx calibers for a comparison. I used the Woodleigh manual and picked smaller low weight charges to see what theoretical low side of recoil could be between some of these .4xx calibers. I did not try to cherry pick other loads from other...
I have taken a large number of whitetail as well as mule deer and black bear with .375 H&H.
I have took one whitetail with my a .416 Rigby last year.
The .375 was my go to for many years.
@Ontario Hunter, you do you.
Not everyone thinks a one piece base is stronger. It can be argued either way. I am not going to refer to it as a “rail” as rail systems exist and are not the same thing. The European rail system is claimed to be better than rings. It’s definitely more expensive...
Long story short, my wife has become very good friends with some Afghan refugees after volunteering to help with serving meals to some in our area during resettlement.
Being Muslim, they have specific beliefs on what is Haram (forbidden) and what is Halal, (permissible).
My wife will post pics...
This is my 1950’s .300 Savage. I installed the no drill scope mount as this is not drilled and tapped for a scope.
It’s not my primary deer gun but it works fine.
This is my firearms deer from last year. It took one doe this year as well. Hand loaded ammunition.
Dennis Olson is who you said threaded and head spaced your barrel.
I sent Dennis an action more than two years ago for a .404 Jeffery build. I drove up and picked out a stock blank. I left a rifle that fits me I want the new stock new match. Dennis profiled the stock on his duplicator to match...
I got a text from an unknown number a few minutes ago. Normally I would just block and go on.
Tonight I decided to have a little fun. I am probably the one blocked now!
@Dr Ray, if you ever have a chance to visit Oklahoma, all will become clear!
In truth, I have enjoyed a conversation in person with @K-man. I saw his wife win a knife in Texas at a private party during DSC.
I have good friends in Oklahoma. It’s just good natured ribbing between neighboring...
Best advice ever! Don’t shoot off sticks until you get there!:eek:
ymmv!
Dumb ol’ me been practicing off sticks at home. That and I don’t consider the .416 Rigby to have “brutal” nor “excessive” recoil. That and double rifles makes me a lost cause………..
Robert Petersen of Petersen Publications commissioned a Holland & Holland double in .458 Winchester magnum. It is on display at the NRA museum in Fairfax museum along with a large number of his family’s firearms. It seems to have served him well. He hunted it.
I am guessing he had it built when...
Any other cartridges that followed with no belt for dangerous game after the .404 Jeffery.
.416 Rigby
.425 Westley Richards
. 500 Jeffery
.505 Gibbs.
.375 Dakota
.404 Dakota
.416 Dakota
.450 Dakota
I am sure there are others. These came to mind.
Belts are not a panacea.
Incidentally, my .416...
Not taxidermy. My daughter has been decorating my Herters hen mallard decoy for several years. I got back at her by adding the turkey legs.
This year and one or two in the past, it flew south for the winter…..
Some of the bespoke high grade guns also have a “bolted safety“.
I still would not be comfortable with“African carry” with one.

Congratulations on that beautiful rifle! This coming from the current owner of one of your previous rifles.:) I was fairly confident your new purchase would be a .470 because the your last one was listed for sale without reloading components!
Is that a true sidelock or a boxlock with side...
I received this pm after posting I would buy from another member. Does not pass the smell test.

Capstick has been and will remain one of my all time favorite authors. I enjoy the writing style of his work regardless. Other authors have been accused of gilding the lily as well. Capstick was not alone in this. Harry Manners and John Taylor are a couple that come to mind. It doesn’t mean...
In my opinion, the fit of the rifle is very important. I prefer to handle them before purchasing.
Like @Mark A Ouellette, I like the Ed Brown. Bansner and co still build the actions. Legendary Arms Works made them for a while. I prefer them to a Winchester 70 CRF. I too am a model 70 fan...
