If Ruger would fit the quarter rib to the conture of the barrel so it wouldn't have that unsightly and incomplete looking gap under it, I would consider the #1 to be the near perfect single shot rifle.
In the unlikely event that they should fail, they can be repaired/replaced. It doesn't appear from the picture that it would extract, but I could very well be wrong. JJ Peradeau will be glad to answer your concerns. Unlike me, he is an expert on double rifles and a world class gunsmith.

Man when that stupid song came out it seemed like it played on any station I turned to trying to get away from it asap. I hated it then and my hatred hasn't subsided any at all since the summer of 1978.

I know what you mean and normally I wouldn't dream of blasphemeing a double with an optic but since it came with that option.....
Also, I'm hoping to go to Zim next year for croc and hippo, I'm planning to take the 450-400 so I can carry just one rifle in a take down case. I'll hunt the hippo...
I acquired a 450-400 double in December and have had no trouble finding loaded ammo and components for it. All Hornady, but that was what I was looking for. I don't see it going anywhere any time soon barring a total financial collapse.
