Common, but only once in a great while for one this severe. Late 70s as I recall for one in this category. I remember driving to the deer lease and the huge cottonwood trees all pushed over near Kerrville. Nothing as deadly as this one, although population growth is probably responsible for the...

First Gun Purchase for new Hunter

For a new shooter the #1 criteria should be on high volume practice - especially from the sticks. A Tikka T1X in 22 RF plus something medium sized with a threaded barrel and brake or supressor for recoil control. Think 2k RF and 1 to 2 k centerfire the first year. The Tikka Roughtech comes...

Need help choosing between 2 calibers

I looked into the 300 PRC awhile back to possibly replace my Sako A series 338WM - used only for hunting Nilgai in South Texas these days. FWIW my outfitter and my guide really like Barnes bullets for the very tough and easily lost Nilgai. My 338/210 gr TTSX reload worked well on a big Nilgai...

Need help choosing between 2 calibers

Choices, choices. Both are designed (chamber wise) to run long heavy bullets and the heavy Barnes and other mono metal bullets work really well. As mentioned, getting the correct twist for those long/heavy Barnes is critical. Unfortunately, most manufacturers twist the 300 PRC with the same 1x10...

    Case separation

Not too unusual. With *Belted Cases* you don't get many reloads. Especially with less than premium brass and full length sizing. I've seen stretched cases - like your picture - and splits (partial case head seperation) using 338 WM Federal cases. These were from factory loaded ammo and three...

    Permanent marking brass cases

I use about six different color sharpies and put a stripe on the bottom of cases after reloading. This is to track the number of times a case has been loaded/fired. Fired cases go into a zip lock by color (also with a note). When polished / cleaned, the stripe is gone, but cleaned cases get an...

    A new plains game rifle

Barnes and other momo metal bullets like a relatively fast twist as well as speed. A 300 of some flavor and 180 gr TTSX is proven to work well. IMO the 9.3, while excellent is some respects, is too slow to take full advantage of a mono metal if some distance is involved.

338 Win Mag for plains game

I really like the 210 TTSX and read somewhere it's designed for *up to* 600 pound animals. While you can increase kinetic energy with lighter faster, you need momentum and penetration as the animals get bigger. Especially if the angles are not ideal.

Tikka Ace Game in 300 Win Mag review (with Ruger Hybrid Muzzle Brake)

I won't have a Fat (or Little) Bastard brake. Just the most obnoxious brakes made, IMO. Very popular brakes, though. I have the Ruger brake (from a RPR I once had) on a 308 practice rifle used for volume practice from the sticks. Works very well for my purposes and the single port is less...

Pretty sure I've seen that cooler before. :) Mine was 49 yards with a 338 WM. Double lunged, ran only ~75 yards and was still hard to find. Best wild game I've ever tasted, btw. Tonight was Bangers and Mash with jalapeño - cheese nilgai sausage.

    Best bolt action .22lr?

FWIW, I find it extremely helpful to use an optic with reliable target turrets for dialing - and/or usable reticle hashmarks. When I bought my T1X I happened to have a NF SHV 4-14x50 mil/mil FFP that was available. My Zero is about 1" high at 50 Yds to mimic my centerfires. For ballistic...

I bought my Tixxa T1X strictly for the range - to rotate with the centerfires for practice from the sticks. Like it a lot with moderately priced Federal Auto Match. For precision, I've seen a Vudoo, with premium match ammo, do amazing things at 325 yards. One of the better 22 match shooters...

Reloading can be dangerous and scary if you don't do it right

How about neck tension? Actually what I'm wondering is when chambering a round, if that 160 RNSP bullet was driven back into the case. I had one rifle (AR15 gas gun, not a bolt action) that If I reloaded heavy 68 - 77 grain bullets it would shoot some fine and drive others back into the case...
